I could not have replaced the shift cable without these two videos. These are the best DIY youtube instructional videos I have come across! The car was really not worth the quoted repair costs plus towing. That would have been $800. I managed to complete this project for the cost of a $75 tow and $17 cable from eBay.

For reference it took me most of a day to complete the repair and I am a novice. It will take anyone a bit of time getting to the tight spaces inside the car by the firewall. A pro with a lift and the right tools and experience as a trained mechanic should be able to get everything done at least twice as fast as someone working with CZcams videos. Just installed the new one and about to put the interior back together. Some tips for anyone else who plans to do this -
You will need a 10mm ratcheting wrench. Literally cannot get either firewall cover off without it. Rent a set from your local auto repair shop if possible.
For the outside retaining clip, WD40, a hammer and chisel or screwdriver works as described in the video. Inside retaining clip, WD40 and pliers worked for me.
When taking apart the interior, the last panel to remove is very hard to get off, use a combination of pulling very hard and a screwdriver to pry it off.
The driver side firewall bolt can be accessed from the passenger side, but it very hard to work with, ratcheting wrench is an absolute necessity if you want to spend less than 2 hours taking out 1 bolt.
When removing the cable, as mentioned in another comment, tie a string to the engine side when you pull it through. The string will map out where the cable went. When installing, reverse the process and use the rope to pull the cable through.
for the engine bracket that hold the cable at the end, you will need a socket extension to get at the lower bolt.
With 2 people the process is much easier.
DO NOT SPEND $300 ON A CABLE. They are on ebay and amazon for under $30. Do not worry, they are just as good of quality and fit.
Save the bolt from the connection point on the engine side, the one that came with my new cable wasnt the right bolt to hold the cable tightly.
For me, the cable was in perfect adjustment when at the complete bottom of the connection point/adjustment point (the little rectangle on the lever at the transmission).
You also do not have to turn the car on to test the cable, use the shift lock release button to the left of the shifter to get out of park and you can run through the gears to make sure they all click. If you mess around with the lever at the transmission a bit you can get a feel for when the car is in each gear, and you can then have someone go inside the car and shift it while you ensure that the lever clicks into the right spot on the transmission.
Good luck, using this video it is a very manageable project. Took me a few days waiting for parts and trying to get the driver side firewall bolt out, but with the right tools, it can be done.
Great video and a perfect project to save the absurd $600-700 that a shop would charge.
Also, if you are in a bind and need a temporary fix, try some JB weld putty where the cable snapped (mine snapped at the plastic connection just like his, seems like a common place).

    This video is invaluable.
I had no idea what a shift cable was until mine broke. And there was no way I would have been able to easily take everything apart, replace the cable and put everything back together.
The hardest thing was getting the bolt out from behind the firewall.
I tried for about 45 minutes and I was about to quit for the day, when my neighbor came over and we got it out in less then 30 seconds.
The secret is... it’s a 2 person job.
Here’s what we did to get the bolt out:
From the driver’s, my neighbor put a ratchet wrench on the bolt. From the passenger’s side, I put my finger on top of the ratchet wrench and bolt to keep the wrench from slipping off the bolt. He then “ratcheted” the wrench and the rest is history.
After each end of the old cable were disconnect and the firewall plates and gaskets were removed, here’s what we did to remove the old cable and install the new cable:
I used a modified Boy Scout knot to secure a nylon string, strong enough not to break, around the end of the old cable located in the engine compartment.
I also wrapped electrical tape around everything just for good measure.
To get the old cable out. My neighbor pull the cable from inside the car while I push it from the other end.
Once the old cable and string where completely through, we cut the string off the old cable and attached it to the new cable.
To get the new cable in. I gently pulled the string from the engine compartment, while he was threading the string and cable through the firewall hole inside the car. I had to direct him as to how fast to thread the cable so it would not get jammed up on something.
There was no guess work as to where the cable needed to go, as the string was guiding the cable’s path.
Once the new cable was through, we cut the string off, hooked up both ends of the cable, and then checked to make sure the shifter was working.
We didn’t know if we did something wrong and might have to take everything apart again, so didn’t bolted down the firewall plates and gaskets until after we checked the cable was working.
This process only took a couple of minutes.
Taking the interior apart and putting it back together was a breeze thanks to Michael.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

      Hi Michael,
      You are welcome.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You made my week.
It’s not very often I find a solution to a mechanical issue and after reading all the comments I knew I had to share.
I wish I had the time to make a video or take some pictures, but I was under a lot of pressure to move the car.
Ironically, this vehicle had been parked in my driveway, unregistered, for over a year and I had just returned from getting a state safety inspection.
I parked and left it running in front of my home and ran in to drop off some groceries. When I came back it wouldn’t shift into gear.
Although, I try to do all my own repairs, I’m not a big car guy. So, naturally my mind went to the worst possible thing that could have been the problem, the transmission was f***ed. And the car was blocking my driveway, part of my neighbor’s driveway, and through traffic could barely get by.
Thanks to you and other DIYers on CZcams, in less than 15 minutes I found out what was wrong and how to fix it.
I’m cannot say this enough, your video is the best I’ve seen. And most likely the car would be in a junkyard right now, if not for your step by step instructions and clear, detailed video.
Yes! Us DIYers need to stick together.
      Thank you, again!
      Dan
P.S. I think this video could be repurposed to only include the removal and installation of the interior. I can imagine there are a lot of things you’d need to get to behind all that stuff.
P.P.S. Do you know of any tips to unbolt the EGR sensor located under the engine?

I have a question: the reason why I looked this up is because i have a 98 camry and when I change gears, (from whatever gear to whatever gear - P to R to D to N or whatever else) it's gotten a little stiff.. little by little, it's getting stiffer. To describe it, it used to be very smooth like I'm shifting gears in oil or water. But it feels like the water has dried out - has gotten stiff when switching. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

I don't mechanic for a living, but I work on my own Trans Am for similar stuff, taking out transmission, engine, etc... this is just so much more involved for a shift cable

Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community.
Don’t recall the exact p/n. Best thing to do is contact your local Toyota dealership service department and provide them with the last 8 digits of your vin number.
They will be able to get you the exact replacement part number for that bushing for your exact vehicle. Whether or not you purchase the part from them or take that p/n provided to the internet to purchase new part will be personal preference.

My 2010ish corolla had the shifter cable break. At first it just needed to be shifted down past the gear and back up again. But I just had to mess with it. Broke it completely. Had to set the gear,, put on ebrake and then go to transmission and manually push it into gear. Not very safe. Had it replaced with dealer parts at a more trustworthy shop. For a hefty sum. 600ish I think. 300 part 300 labor. Ish. Broke again in 6 months. Now I just shift down past my gear and shift up to where I need it. Not worth paying 600 again if it still kinda works and will probably break again

Video Parts I and II were great, but I wish there had been more detail about the driver's side bolt connecting the rubber gasket and metal shield to the inside firewall. I tried everything but I could not get the bolt re-inserted and tightened. I simply could not get the bolt properly started once I managed--with great difficulty--to get it into the holes in the metal plate and rubber gasket. I simply did not have enough room for my fingers to grasp it in a meaningful way. I have every wrench and tool in the book and then some, and I tried everything, but I could not get that bolt started so that I could then use my ratchet wrench. Michael, how did you get that bolt in? I tightened up the passenger-side bolt as much as possible and am tempted to leave the gasket and shield in place with just the one bolt. It will probably hold. But I hate doing that. Any suggestions? I worked on this problem for hours and hours before giving up. Hardest bolt situation I've ever encountered.

Hi. I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I have a 2004 Sport Corolla that had a broken transmission shifter cable that needed to be replaced. Is this a piece that can be vandalized by someone if they want to wreck your car. Is it easily accessible? I'm sorry to ask such a random question, but I'm hoping someone can let me know exactly where the cable is and how easy it is to break? Someone recently vandalized my car and I am worried they may have come back and broken the shifter cable. Thank you to anyone who might be able to help me with this information.

Thanks for the reply & the actual internal portion of the cable may be loosing its efficient slide. Although the cable is still connected & not broke, it’s possible that there is more internal friction being generated than when it was new....causing the cable to stick or seem harder to move.
We did notice that our cable was getting a little harder to shift. This started roughly 3 months prior to the cable actually braking....she finally called it quits one day. 😫
