The victory of the underdog. The last minute penalty shot that wins the tournament. The training montage. Many people love to glorify victory on the field, cheer for teams, and play sports. But should we be obsessed with sports? Are sports as good for us as we make them out to be, or are they just a fun and entertaining pastime? Leah Lagos and Jaspal Ricky Singh show what science has to say on the matter.

I suffered a depression for years after two broken relationships. Then I decided to buy a road bike and just start cycling to free my mind and get away from my computer. I actually sold my graphics card so I could afford it.
Now I can't stop, it's just ridiculously satisfying and takes you to new heights over and over again.

It took me years to realise that exercise is so much more than just sports. Walking, cycling and swimming (in a non-competitive environment) for example are not necessarily considered sports, but they are definitely exercise and are a great way to work on your health even when you hate sports!

As someone who has been a part of dozens of sports teams since the age of 5, I can say that I completely agree with the idea that playing sports is not only good exercise for the body, but it is also good for the mind. I am a college student and a college athlete. I am a member of a 55 person swim team. I work out, both in the pool and on land, at least four hours a day. I am not only getting a significant quantity of exercise important for preventing things like diabetes and heart disease, but also I am getting additional benefits as well. My teammates keep me motivated and make me feel like I am a part of something bigger. The sport helps me stay organized and team practices change my mood significantly for the better. Playing a sport is important for not only your physical health, but also your mental strength. It is good for both the body and the brain.

To play some of those sports you need money and time. My parents lacked the first one and I lacked the latter when I left tennis after one year. Loved it, it was the only activity that I liked after my mom put me through a whole range of other things troughout the years, non of which I liked: piano, dance, aerobics... Tennis was the only thing I liked and had to leave it. Now the only thing I can afford is going running.

Sports has been a vital part of my conscious life. For 11 years, I have been a professional swimmer and can agree that sports are the best medicine for both the body and the mind. It reduces stress and anxiety as the soothing nature of water has a calming effect on the mind. Also, it's a great way of social interaction, which in turn has excellent mental health benefits. During that period of my life I can say that I had better sleep, mindfulness, and improved mood.

well, sometimes being on a team can be proved really hard. If you have coaches and team mates that do not respect you and make you feel uncomfortable while being on the court with them, then you're gonna have the opposite results. And that is such a shame, because I've been playing volleyball in teams for eight years and recently I made the decision to stop competing just because of this phenomenon. Hope everyone finds a team that makes them feel like they are important and not useless in the team's activities.

How Playing Sports Benefits Your Body (Transcrição)
1 - The victory of the
underdog over the favorite team, the last minute penalty shot that wins
the tournament, the high-energy training montages.
2 - Many people love to
glorify victory on the playing field, cheer for favorite teams and play
sports, but here’s a question - Should we be so obsessed with sports?
Is playing sports actually as good for us as we make it out to be? Or
just a fun and entertaining pastime? What does science have to say?
    3 - First of all, it’s
well accepted that exercise is good for our bodies and minds and that’s
definitely true. Exercising, especially when we’re young, has all sorts
of health benefits. Like strengthening our bones, clearing out bad
cholesterol from our arteries and decreasing the risk of stroke, high
    blood pressure and diabetes.
    4 - Our brains also
release a number of chemicals when we work out - including endorphins.
These natural hormones which control pain and pleasure responses in the
central nervous system can lead to feelings of euphoria or what’s often
    called a ‘runners high’.
    5 - Increased
endorphins and consistent physical activity in general can sharpen your
focus and improve your mood and memory. So does that mean we get just as
much benefit going to the gym five days a week as we would joining a
team and competing? Well, here’s where it gets interesting.
    6 - Because it turns
out that if you can find a sport and a team you like, studies show that
there are all sorts of benefits that go beyond the physical and mental
benefits of exercise alone. Some of the most significant are psychology
benefits, both in the short and long term.
7 - Some of those come
from the communal experience of being on a team. For instance, learning
to trust and depend on others, to accept help, to give help and to work
together towards a common goal. In addition, commitment to a team and
doing something fun can also make it easier to establish a regular habit
    of exercise.
    8 - School sport
participation has also been shown to reduce the risk of suffering from
depression for up to four years. Meanwhile, your self-esteem and
confidence can get a big boost. There are a few reasons for that.
9 - One is found in
training. Just by working and working at skills, especially with a good
coach, you reinforce a growth mindset within yourself. That’s when you
say ‘Even if I can’t do something today, I can improve myself through
practice and achieve it eventually’. That mindset is useful in all walks
    of life.
    10 - And then there’s
learning through failure, one of the most transformative, long-term
benefits of playing sports. The experience of coming to terms with
defeat can build the resilience and self-awareness necessary to manage
academic, social and physical hurdles. So even if your team isn’t
winning all the time, or at all, there is a real benefit to your
    experience.
    11 - Now, not everyone
will enjoy every sport. Perhaps one team is too competitive or not
competitive enough. It can also take time to find a sport that will play
to your strengths - That’s completely okay. But if you spend some time
looking, you’ll be able to find a sport that fits your individual needs.
12 - And if you do,
there are so many benefits. You’ll be a part of a supportive community.
You’ll be building your confidence. You’ll be exercising your body and
nurturing your mind. Not to mention, having fun.
Como Praticar Esportes Beneficia o Seu Corpo (Tradução)
    1 - A vitória do
    treinos.
    2 - Muitas pessoas
adoram glorificar a vitória no campo de jogo, torcer pelas equipes
favoritas e praticar esportes.
    “barato do corredor”.
    5 - O
    6 - Porque
    8 - A
finalmente, atingir meu objetivo”. Essa mentalidade é útil para todos os
    estilos de vida.
    10 - E
    11 - No

Sports in school or college does not always help to get rid of depression. It can be the reason of it too. If you are not good in running or something else, but you want to get good mark and be on the same level with everyone, it can make you really sad. As for me, I love passive excercises, but I'm really bad runner. And I cannot stand sun and active training because of my health. It is better for me to train at special clubs, that I choose myself and do it for myself, than do excercises at college that are not suitable for me and make me sad.

I really enjoy running so my sophomore year of high school i tried out cross country because they would always be like "we're a family" and i was looking for new friends and running could be our common interest but when i got there they were really non accepting and i didn't want to be in that enviroment. So later during spring season i tried out swim and i liked it so much more, i convinced a friend to join with me so i wasn't the only new one. I still wasn't accepted with wide open arms because i was on JV but i made a lot of JV friends. Swim isn't an all year thing and i didn't want to stop swimming so i joined water polo my junior year (last year im going into senior yr now) and i enjoyed it, it was hard i got yellrd at and i improved. The people who made me feel unwelcome before were my new family and i love then to death. Try out different sports don't stick with one if you really don't enjoy it, you'll achieve so much more if you're doing something you love!

In America, if you don't have a lot of money is very hard to do sports. Because if you are an immigrant, you cannot join a team because you have to be good to join the school team. That is why I usually go to the gym for workout, but it will be nice if high and middle schools would begin giving opportunity to people with less ability on sports to take a sport for free.

OK I'm sorry but I'm not made for sports. never in my life have I ever had a runners high, I simply hate moving my body away from my bed. playing soccer in a team made me very frustrated with myself and angry at my team, shouting and picking up fights with my teammates. I always gave the ball to others, because they wanted it so badly and I didn't want my opponent to loose. when fencing I would simply stand there and not move and cry when I got home. in school I would always get bad grades for similar reasons, which made me get frustrated with myself. I never wanted to take away the ball from the others, so that they wouldn't have to feel the way I did.
basically, I hate sports and I almost always end up crying when I do some.

I'm definitely the same way! I was bullied and that intensified at school sports, for which I just don't have aptitude, so I absolutely hate sports. But sports aren't the only exercise you can do! All you have to do is find a type of exercise you do like. For me, for example, it was hiking and swimming, and I feel much better now that I do regularly get moving. ;-)

    • @Tamizushi
      @Tamizushi Před 8 lety +6

It's not to bad if you don't want to play in a team, but it's crucial that you at least do some physical exercise. People generally think of physical exercise as something we do just because it makes us fitter and more attractive, but that's a mistake. It's actually a basic body need just like hygiene or socialization. Depression, anxiety, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, etc: if you don't move enough, you WILL get sick from it. On another hand, the specific nature of the exercise you do is much less important as long as it gets your blood flowing and the intensity is high enough. Pick whatever sport you like or whatever fits in you schedule best. If you live in the city, just commuting on a bicycle is enough to make a big difference and it can also save you a bit of money. It's now known that even 5 minutes of exercise 2 or 3 times a day is enough to improve your mood noticeably: virtually everyone can fit 5 minutes of jumping jacks here and there in their busy day.
