I love Paul's praise of Stilgar - "You think I'm stupid enough to deprive myself of the best of us"
And it parallels his father's words to Thufir
@@sulphuric_glue4468 true
How is it a praise? I didn't quite understand that part. I thought it was mean't in a rude way
@@CHALLENGER_XNE it mean Paul recognises Stilgar's experience in leadership and battle. Though, Stilgar has succumbed to a follower from being a great independent leader.
@@user-pm2b47ar8d In some ways I see that also, but given the context of the situation in this scene, I feel like it's more plausible/fitting that Paul is implying that he will not be limited from the best of us (the ability to speak freely at the top) as the newly self-proclaimed leader. How dare Stilgar infer that I (Paul) be subject to the same limitations as everyone else because I am the Messiah.
This was just my interpretation of it. I much prefer the idea that he was praising Stilgar, though. He's my favourite character. :)
"I dont care what you believe! I believe!" This is such a powerful phrase and my favorite from Stilgar in this whole move.
A man trapped by prophecy and devotion, but he stuck to it determined to see the path down the road.
Exactly it was amazing
Shepard Book said nearly identical line in Serenity.
“I don’t care what you believe, just believe”
I like the one where he’s explaining why Paul is so humble he has to be the mahdi 😂
I love this moment too, it was my favorite part in the trailer also, Javier Bardem is a Master at his craft.
This epic part 2 is full of unbelievable moments, what a great time for movies!
No joke. I truly believe javier deserves an oscar for this role. He was so immersed in his character and so important for the storyl
Javier Bardem deserves a huge amount of credit for the way he portrayed Stilgar becoming so fanatical to the point of being totally unrecognisable. It's fantastic acting. Really quite unsettling.
And the Oscar for best supporting actor goes too....
@@davebennett2689 It really should, his performance makes me believe that he is having a religious experience.
The scene at the end where he leads the Feydakin into the drop ships, his eyes glowing with manic fanaticism is really terrifying, knowing what they're about to do... 61 Billion lives....
But at the end just before being Paul tool he Ask if all this are for a greater good for his people (green paradise)
Despair lead fremen to this point
Stilgar's fanaticism made him unrecognisable to the man we saw in Part One
Something I really love about this movie
Yes and no. He was much more reserved and skeptical in Part One. But after seeing Paul defeat Jamis, a trained fighter (even asking if Paul was toying with him in the fight), I think it awakened that dormant hope in him. Stilgar was just ahead of the curve and finally felt his lifelong faith was being rewarded.
Yeah. I've read the books, and I remember being hella confused in part I, cuz I did NOT get Stilgar vibes from him. In part II, I couldn't be more happy of the perfect casting for his character
It made him unrecognizable from Anton from No Country for Old Men.
Paul says the same about Stilgar in the books. In fact Paul hates how Stil went from being a mentor to a worshiper. He often compares it to losing a good friend. (Their bond in the books is more profound than what you can fit in two movies)
I know it's played for comic relief in some parts of the movie in a Monty Python kind of way, and yes, it is funny at times. But Javier Bardem's portrayal of Stilgar and his fanatical faith is so fantastic. I sometimes forgot I was watching a movie in some scenes with Stilgar, which is an insane thing that almost never happens to me anymore.
And that look in the south when Paul gave his speech, the wonder in Stilgar's eyes, that was palpable. I could actually see it on Javier Bardem's face. I could have seen other actors in certain roles in both movies, but Javier Bardem was BORN to play Stilgar.
It stops being funny after a while, in a good way. The glazed-over look in his eyes when Paul rallies the war council is terrifying.
@@Eastcyning There is a quote from Phoebe Waller Bridge that really fits what they did with Stilgar in this film. "Disarm the audience with comedy, then punch them in the gut with drama when they least expect it." That's exactly what Stilgar's early moments do, they disarm us so that it truly hits us deep when the true face of fanaticism appears
@@felixhaggblom7562 To add to that:
Comedy is something that people will remember, which is perfect because Stilgar's character development echoes a main theme of the movie; the danger of religious/political fanaticism.
Also, it very much parallels real life. Conspiracy theories and those who believe them are typically laughed out of the room. It's comedic up until it isn't (when it turns into real, violent action, which the final scene with Stilgar perfectly underscores).
@@user-uv7eb1fi4b I like how as the movie enters its third act and Paul really starts to push the Lisan al-Gaib stuff, Stilgar's character deterioriates into a simple fanatic, whose dialogue is essentially just yelling Lisan al-Gaib and asking his messiah for orders. The thoughtful, amiable and wise Stilgar from earlier in the movie is subsumed. This is exactly what happens in the novel, and Paul hates it.
It's beautiful. His enthusiasm about his faith is inspiring. Stilgar has so much depth. He is also such a tragic character. I pity him. It is a pity we should try to remember when religious friends or family are blinded by the same. Faith is good. Blind faith is not. We should try to treat them with compassion, even when they are pushy - something I am trying to work on.
Stilgar was PERFECTLY casted. Hell the whole movie was
Faith in something more, more than just ourselves, our suffering, is a power that cannot unity like nothing else. When the pain would otherwise drive willpower from your body, faith demands you continue. Stilgar lost a friend when Paul awoke, but he gained his Prophet, and for him, that was a worthy sacrifice for his people, for his faith.
In that instant, Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen
naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It
was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it.
"I have seen a friend become a worshiper," he thought.
@@shehansoysa571and so many do not see the true meaning of this story eh? It's sad. At least you read the book and understood it my friend. 👌
Paul also explained it to Gurney in the movie but people still ignore it. He tells Gurney his troops used to be his friends now they are just followers.
But the problem is by believing in Paul he will bring more suffering than the planet alone could have done. This faith will bring nothing but destruction. The paradise will never exist and the Fremen will die but in the process million other will die too, just because they believed in some made up story. That is the true meaning of Dune.
It's not that people don't understand what is the real meaning og Frank Herbert's Dune.
They do understand, But it's just a fiction
There is no real victim here
People aren't dumb
But they crave balance, heroes and villain there's no different in a fiction
A good story is a good story. It becomes different if it becomes reality
In that instant, Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen
naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It
was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it.
"I have seen a friend become a worshiper," he thought.
are those verses of Stilger included from the dune books? I never found that myself.
In a way, it's a shame because he went from friend to worshipper and now reveres him almost to like a god-like figure. I wonder how Chani's role is going to play out in all this.
One of the best lines which I remember from the book
When watching the speech in part 2 I kept thinking of that part of the book.
Hence highlighting Paul inherent weakness & why he was such a failure that he walked off into the desert to die while leaving that terrible burden to his son to carry for the next thousand years. Stilgar was only wrong in that Paul was unworthy since he refused to become the God-Emperor that he needed to be to walk the Golden Path.
My favourite character, I love his faith and his brutal one liners:
“Shai-Hulud decides if you become fremen today, or if you die”
Also love his delivery on “Lisan al-Gaib” when Paul takes out Feyd-Rautha
And every time he says “as written”
Literally one of the most memorable parts of the movie for me was when Stilgar said "Lisan al gaib" when paul killed feyd.
"As written" was so much better a line than "again the legend". The best portay of the character.
1:38, oh man, the happiness on Stilgar´s eyes when Paul said exactly what he needed to say. Bardem absolutely killed it as stilgar
and... he cries! Something he probably hasn't done in a couple of decades
That expression he makes stands out in every rewatch as just phenomenal acting, it’s so tragic, you can palpably feel him resigning himself to Paul, who he truly believes will lead them to paradise. A moment of pure religious ecstasy and miracle - and the relief that he has not wasted his life devoting himself to the prophecy
Stilgar, from the guy who never waste a single teardrop to a crying worshiper. This man desperately needs something to believe in, and Paul gave him faith.
Love how faith is depicted here and how it's very close to reality. Faith acting like a double edged sword - one that can cut through any difficulty but also misplaced faith can cut the self and harm others. Such a powerful concept
Yah but faith in the universe is needed for humanities overall survival.
The overflown chills i got when Stilgar says "Mahdi, what do you foresee for us?" with such emotion finally knowing his faith has been proven. Stilgar/Javier Bardem is definitely the best character/actor in the movie after Paul/Timothee. Such a range from both of them. Casting done perfectly!
Best "SUPPORTING" actor. truly is a follower of LISAN AL GAIB!!!
"Do you think I am stupid enough to deprive myself of the best of us". This goes so well with what Leto tell Thufir in the first movie when he tried to resign. People allow themselves to be slaves to traditions and rules made by men that came before and that so often leads them to weakening themselves. People do not like to look beyond the next step to take. Honor and tradition help put you on a path but you will become lost if you only use those as your guides.
It was crazy to watch stilgar go from being the teacher and mentor to the devout follower. Third movie gon break my heart I think 😥
that's the point. Stilgar is meant to show the dangers of blind zealotry and charismatic leaders.
Best hype man of all time 💯
Poor Stilgar went from spitting in the halls of Duke Leto to "LISAN AL GAIB!". The true drug of these people was hope, not spice.
Religion is the opium of the masses
Like Paul, he's unrecognisable by the end.
But where Paul's transformation is mainly horrifying, Stilgar's "Lessening" (as the book puts it) is also kind of tragic (but still horrifying, especially when he leads the Feydakin to holy war at the end)
The spitting wasn't an insult. Watch that scene again.
Bardem was a pleasure to watch in these 2 films.
He combined the qualities of a noble, comedic & tragic figure in an effortless manner.
Very well done indeed.
What's funny is that when Paul says that he is the Lisan al-Gaib Javier Bardem played pure happiness with so much talent that it reminded me that I was watching a movie. I thought "I never saw an actor play happiness so well". I don't think it was supposed to take me out of the movie for a second but it did 😂😂😂😂
Javier was phenomenal
Ah, Stilgar, a man of faith in the end turned one of Paul's biggest supporters. A man trapped by prophecy but with a stern belief in it to the end. A lot of people makes memes about Stilgar but it does show you the power of fanatical devotion in a world setting.
Stilgar probably got the best story arc
he believed from the beginning, and all his wishes came true
he helped those who needed it, and got rewarded with his dreaming coming true
And the going off to slaughter billions of people 😂
@@lachlanmacarthur8992 we aren't there yet
besides pretty sure he doesn't do any slaughtering, the civil war that the emperor started causes the galactic infrastructure to collapse, leading to starvation among planets dependant on the food trade
@@unowno123the books are perfectly clear : Stilgar is an embodyment of murderous fanatism, "for the good cause".
@@athanaseruisseau7784 I missed that part in the movie
@@unowno123 what do think Stilgar intends to do at the end of the 2nd movie, when he is yelling "Lisan al Ghaïb" with his knife raised while leading thousands of fanatized warriors to spaceships ?
Spread joy, hapiness and candies in the galaxy ?
Gosh. The movie is literally the transformation of a proud balanced man (Stilgar) into a fanatic muslim-djihadist-like killer.
This video is so good it makes the hairs on the back of my head stand up.
Amazing actor and performance. I bought into everything he was saying and feeling.
Compared to the 1980 movie or whenever it was released, they really improved upon Stilgar as a character!
Ready to become Stilgar's fundamental fanatic.
We all need a hype man like Stilgar.
Paul gained his most loyal follower; but in the process lost his best friend and mentor. Best casting I've ever seen.
Faith, when humans doesn't has anything left to live for, faith keep then going, faith keep them alive, fighting another day and maybe for a better day. Stilgar is basically a fanatic
Beautifully said
really made the movie. His character. Just kept getting better
He carried the movie on his back for long periods.
The fact that Stilgar was willing for Paul to take his life because of their beliefs is crazy and it’s very accurate to religion in real life especially hundreds of years ago that ending where he’s just yelling the messiah’s name getting on board the ship his “belief” came true and now more than ever he’s all in….no matter what happens
Stilgar was right though. Despite the religious mask, Paul's path is the golden path that ensure humanities survival.
@@shadowbandit3975 mmhmm
@@lottostuuud I guess you don't know the whole story
@@shadowbandit3975 jihad, yes
@@lottostuuud Jihad leads to the scattering, which leads to the golden path and humanities survival. Without the Jihad, humanity would have gone extinctic. Thats the vision Paul has forseen. Thus Stigar even though his religion was fake, it still served a real higher purpose.
stilgar got the best part of this whole journey
I watched it last weekend. This weekend, this video has been on repeat non stop. Thank you for this great edit. I fear for Stilgar in Dune Messiah - but I felt his faith in this movie. I felt it, saw it in his eyes. And at the same time, in his hope and belief, I felt dread and horror. Amazing film.
Stilgar has by far one of the most dynamic and interesting character arcs in all of the books. I really hope they at least adapt a few more so we can see it, his final passage in his final book is a great way to cap off the character in a book where a lot of the other characters didn't get any endings of note at all
Stilgar my beloved 🙏❤️
how i love this man i swear to Lisan al Gaib
Amazing. "Do not underestimate power of faith"
Stilgar was fantastic in the movie
Give this man another Oscar.
This is such a powerful cut. It really gets to the heart of the story that is so easily lost in the pomp and circumstance of the epic.
0:15 the adoration... a man gazing upon the prophet of his people
That last one is always gets me 😂
no one's glazed harder than Stilgar. truly the goat of Dune more than the god Emperor himself
here before this blows up
Same
Fantastic, this reads as a trailer for a film with Stilgar as the protagonist, worshipping his prophet and spreading his message yet blind to the warpath his faith has created
2:09 this scene, him leading the Feydakin to holy war with eyes full of manic fanaticism, one of the very last shots of the movie, is especially terrifying to me, especially with the full knowledge of what they're about to do.
61 Billion lives...
This is the first video I thought expertly depicts Stilgar and his devotion. Most just use his basic trailer lines…. These production choices are 🔥
Fight it, resist it, run from it, but you cannot deny the power of belief
This edit is so good, I keep coming back to it
Villeneuve elevates story telling to such a sublime level it is hard to believe.
Stilgar's fanaticism was genuinely terrifying
Inspiring*
@@nationalsocialism3504 If you thought Stilgar was an inspiring character, you misunderstood the message of the story. 😢
@@magicalpj you misunderstand human nature since obviously you are responding to the unnatural Transhumanist Liberal religious dogma being preached... but that puts you in minority which is why there isn't any negative instances of Stilgar but Chani is studiously ignored which was the intended "message"
@@nationalsocialism3504 Who's talking about transhumanism? I'm talking about religious fanaticism. That level of blind faith in a manufactured messiah is anything but inspiring. The main message of Dune, in Frank Herbert's own words, is to "beware of heroes."
@magicalpj since it's human nature to find fulfillment in following a worthy leader... then by definition of your rejection of humanity is proof of your own religious zeal. It requires religiosity to reconcile your delusional perception with reality... Stilgar is the natural human response to the literal Lisan Al-Gaib fulfilling every prophecy. The Bene Gesserit had nothing to do with Paul calling the biggest sandworm that anyone had even heard about in legend... Paul IS the Lisan Al-Gaib cause he is a Kwistaz Haderach
The movie would not be near as good without Stilgar, amazing acting.
Javier Bardem annihilated this role. His portrail of Stilgar is insanely good.
*Stilgar* The biggest Glazer of the known universe!! 🗿
I've gone back to see this film five times, because Javier makes me cry he's so believable.
GOOSEBUMPS. CHILLS.

Very well edited my friend. Keep going
Thank you so much mate!
He really held the whole movie together I think! Great edit
This is Amazing!
I loved every second
This is a powerful performance, a powerful movie, and a powerful message. I wonder if we will listen.
Look Stilgar, and the weaving influences of the Bene Gesserit, are what make this movie fantastic. They're never ever the main focus, but without them the film is simply NOWHERE near as good.
Stilgar to me is the best actor in this whole movie. Paul while the focus is just kinda in the background as the main character. It's super weird to explain, but he gets overshadowed in the subtlest way (throughout the movie) by the excellent plot and storytelling.
Dune movies are so good.
His role grew so wholesome as the character aged into the second movie.
This is amazing
Great work! One of the best characters!
Thank you so much!
Best actor in the movie
Javier Bardem what an actor!
you can always count on him to deliver a great role
“YOU CANT FEEL, I FEEL”
LISAAANNNNN AL GAIIIIIIIII BBB!!!!
It just dawned on my how important Paul’s “I’M POINTING THE WAY” line is to the Fremen.
According to Stilgar, the constellation of the kangaroo mouse points to the North Star on Arrakis. The Fremen word for kangaroo mouse is “Muadib.” Paul took the name “Muadib” when he become one of the Fremen. So he asserts then and there that he is “Muadib”: the one who points the way.

The entire movie is about transmutation, in its abysmal form.
Paul, after drinking the Water Of Life, is no longer Atreides but a genocidal tyrant.
Jessica is no longer her mother but a machiavellian figure.
Stilgar is no longer a fierce warrior but a puppet in the hands of a cult.
The only one sticking to her way is Chani, running away on Zimmer's saddest and most powerful score, Kiss The Ring, in the final scene.
What a masterpiece!

It came to a point you wanted Paul to succeed not for him but for Stilgar. 😅
