You can use Kapton tape to stabilize the flex cable as you solder it
Or solder the ground pads if you don't have any
Finally something comprehensive! I'll give it a try tomorrow
Good luck!
@@TheModSmith itll work with any official firmware? I'm on 15.0.1
@@QTheMostThe latest firmware is 18.0.0 and is supported, so you can go ahead and update.
@@TheModSmith awesome thanks
@@TheModSmith god damn i didnt realize how small the caps were.. one came off right away...
This is a great tutorial! You take time to show people how to manage screws which not many videos do. Beginner modders don't always think of that and lose screws often.
Thanks for the nice comment, I’m glad you liked the video!
For the metal shield cutting bit, what you can do is cut a longer strip of tape and tape it to the mod chip so it goes down and is visible, then just cut that same size and then remove the tape or shorten it, flip it, do whatever you want with it. Obviously you'll have to be careful when removing since the chip is free to move around and you don't wanna break a connection or something but I think it'll make it look better the closer the cut is to the size of the chip's plate
I was able to install the chip this friday :)
Congratulations!
@@TheModSmith Thank you.
@TheModSmith do you know where to get an original fan for the Switch V1? I bought one from Aliexpress and this was permanently on full speed. My fan makes some noises ...
Cutting the shield over an motherboard seems very smart !
What’s your issue with that?
@@eyehear10 small pieces of the metal you cut can fall inside. Its very easy to put the swotch on the side and cut the shield
easy fix: dont cut the metal over the motherboard?
@@TechFlexwery Nice video by the way
Professor Snape is teaching me how to mod my nintendo switch. how cool is that
😂😂😂😂
Took a shot every time he said like
Cool stuff.
Have you tried a chisel tip? Someone recommended it to me some time ago, and after giving it a try on a few soldering I just could go back. It makes it easier to do good soldering points, at least for me, is the good in general.
Anyway, I'm now considering cracking open my switch.
awesome video
Hey bro!!! donde veo atmos en 8.001 para la SD??? alguna recomendación???
Trying to figure it out:
A switch oled with a Picofly rp2040 ... running a-ok on emulated size hekate and normal side.
Should you avoid 100% updating the switch firmware itself, or is it OK, or what special methods are needed?
I'm wanting to play my physical game cartridges online while booted into stock/semi stock mode , but it keeps asking for the software/firmware of switch to be updated first....
Thanks!
Hi, how are you? I wanted to do it too but I have a different modchip. Change something?
Seems extremely doable. On the other hand, while seeing the tutorial, at the timestamp 27:34 it felt a bit worrying that the cable coming behind the shield would be pinched. It's a matter of perspective, or perhaps should it be recommendable to trimming the shield a bit more?
I've also noticed this, and while it hasn't caused any problems on my console, it feels a bit off. The issue arises with the heatsink because cutting the metal shield any further would disrupt where the heatsink contacts the shield.
@@TheModSmith perhaps bending that part up and then adding something soft as padding. Nonetheless, if it doesn't puncture the ribbon cable, that shouldn't be an issue, init?
It would be very helpful, more control, and more accurate if you have a fine tip for the solder iron.
Perfect install, brother! By the way, SP2 can be bridged to the right because the bridged point and the SP2 point are both ground. But, other than that, this was way better than the last video. Now, do an OLED or a Lite, please!
phew! Good to know, I accidentally shorted it.
It works anyway! Just to be clear, we are talking about the right-most soldering joint.
@@ivanv754 Yup, that one can also be a pain to correct if the flex cables are big enough.
I don’t have a microscope do you think I can use 100x zoom on a Samsung camera instead???
Hi, what is the temp. that you use for soldering?
Just to add some clarity some v1 switches came patched. Easiest way to find out if you have v1 or v2 is to look on back of console just above the usb port. The model number printed there determines if you have a v1 or v2
V1 = hac-001 whereas v2 = hac-001(-01)
Despite my comment, thank you for the comprehensive overview, plan to install mine tonight. Flashed the modchip already in preparation for the bigger job tonight 😬🤞
Ah yes, thanks for making me aware of this! Good luck with your install, I hope it goes well.
@@TheModSmith me too, hit a snag where one tri wing got stripped, had to drill it out 😱 but it went well
For this modchip, patched or not, it works on either. Easiest way to find out imo is checking the serial number online, it is well documented. For reference some V1's that are patched still have the original model number, so it is not foolproof to go by model number.
I was software updating my switch quite a bit but it's hac-001 so idk if it's patched or not lol
Thank you. I just modded mine. But now what to do, which guide to use for CFW etc?
I have everything to do this myself except for the electrical tape.. great install btw and thanks!
Thanks for watching!
What size of iron tip you are using?
Maybe it would've been a better idea to slide the module on the fan opening of the shield and mark to cut only were the flat flex is? That way, the heatshield will hold the module in place and you don't have to add extra tape.
how do u flash the uf2 file? im a newbie for switch but not androids and iphones when jailbreaking and rooting
In reality, it makes you cringe but is completely fine, that cable usually doesn’t sustain damage from that.
It seems pre-tinning was not so effective or made it easier to solder, would you skip that step in retrospect?
It's always worth doing when you're soldering something, whether it ends up helping a noticeable amount or not. The soldering would have probably been messier and consumed more time if he hadn't.
Need another one. This time after that you're going to install the CFW.
Please also if doing anything inside the console disconnect the battery. You dont want any shorts to happen or you could potentially turn your switch into a brick!
So this mod works on patched switches is that correct?
can you tell me where to buy the chip?
Very good video, just what Ive been looking for. 2 questions, 1. do you need a microscope for the soldering? 2 what temp on the solder iron did you use?
I highly recommend using a microscope for this installation, especially due to the small size of the capacitors. I personally use 420 degrees Celsius on my iron, although some suggest temperatures closer to 360.
@@TheModSmith Thank you for your reply. I just got the mod chip this week. Wish me luck lol
I managed with a headband magnifying glass but it involved a lot of eye strain lol.
Don't use too hot... The capacitor will come off
All I've got is a magnifying glass that's on my helping hands. Can't afford a microscope just for this.
The only thing missing from your gears is Soldering Wick or a Solder Pump :)
Do those tools help you with these kinds of jobs?
@@josesshopandservices yes it is easier to pickup excess solder instead of trying to get it out with the soldering iron. Cleaning the soldering iron can do the job, but with excess heat you might desolder the capacitor and overall excess heat is not good anyway. So a small wick or pump which are really cheap will do the job.
Does this work on oled?
For all console?
So I have this done, what do I do now, my build is 18.0.0 but I can’t update my games unless I get 18.0.1 and atmosphere ain’t updated yet
wait
Where i can buy the chip?
Would I be able to get someone from a phone fixing shop to solder the mod chips on and stuff?
You can ask in they do that type of soldering
Whould you consider this easier or harder than rgh/jtaging an xbox 360?
It’s definitely harder than all of the Xbox 360 mods, mostly due to the size of the points that you need to solder to.
15:05 his soldering kept getting too me, he had it done but kept having to touch it up and making it worse like you had it perfect but kept redoing it and redoing it
Hold up, the ROL glow board was one of your projects?
What is the ROL glow board!? I’m new to switch modding and find these videos cool and super informative
Its an old xbox 360 mod that would fade the ring of light on the front in and out in a breathing animation while the console was powered off.
I actually came across an old ROL board with one still fitted in the house yesterday
It was previously documented on, but he did perform it on one of his own 360 consoles.
@@josesshopandservices so its not his product but one he has showcased in the past? (i'm new here)
Will this version of the firmware on the RP2040 works on the Switch with 18.0.1?
Yes 👍
This looks amazing! I'm new to soldering and I'm practicing on some SMD practice kits that are really smal like those points. I was afraid to mess it up, however seeing that if bridges happen you can fix it fairly quickly makes me more secure.
I have a few questions if you don't mind answering
- Do you do anything special to fix a bridge? Just add more flux and reflow and poke it a bit with the tip and it kinds of relocates itself? I will try to purposely bridge something on my practice board just to see how I do.
- Can you use desoldering wick to desolder if you want to start again? I'm using it on my practice boards.
- What is the difference between brown-colored flux and clear flux? I have both, but to me they do the same, both are no-clean, and claim to have same properties and uses.
- I'm practicing on 0603 metric/0201 imperial, are those on the CPU a lot smaller?
Thank you very much! Will update when I feel confident enough and do it on my own v2.
If you have a bridge, cleaning the tip so it can take solder away and is all that is needed, this can be repeated until happy. Desoldering wick is another way to remove solder and is perfectly acceptable. Brown coloured flux has 'Rosin' in it which tends to give it that colour, not all flux has Rosin in it. Best flux imo is the amtech stuff. There is no 'no-clean' flux, always clean flux away with alcohol without fail. For the small connections on the cpu, magnification will help big time - this can be done by digital microscope or a cheap set of magnification headsets which are on ebay and will help massively. The only advice I can give is to not rush the procedure, take your time and try to do it as neatly as you can and you will be golden. Good luck.
Would I have to use a V1 or V2 chip on my console if the serial number fell into the, "might be patched" category? I actually went on to try and modding it via the RCM method but I did in fact discover that my console was patched
If you’re unable to enter RCM mode and inject a payload, then you have a V2 Switch.
@@TheModSmith appreciate the response! Have everything I need except for the chip itself which is still in the mail from China haha. Will be using your guides though 🫡
If you have a HAC-001(01), that has a Mariko SoC and needs the "V2" cable.
HAC-001 (Without the 01) is the less efficient Erista, which uses the "V1" cable.
Im really tired of how the scene uses the terms "V1" and "V2" because they even include RCM patched Eristas in the term "V2", which is stupid.
@@jtchoi2003 holy molyyyyyy wait thanks so much. Potentially saved me from soldering on the wrong chip omg lol
@@jtchoi2003 also what does SoC stand for? Also you’re now the jchoi I know in real life who used to main Mario in smash right? Lol
What mod would you recommend to someone looking to play their legal games online and pirated games offline without risking a ban?
Two switches
The discord link expired
Yo can u send me a link of the modchip?
Just curious if this modchip will give my switch access to apps like emulators and media player like nmxp
Btw thanks for this video... This is the most detailed video I found on the process
And you earned my sub also cheers mate
where did you get the console shell, looks fantastic.
I received the shell from eXtremeRate and will be creating an installation guide for it shortly. Feel free to use my discount code 'TMS' to get 10% off everything on their website.
IFixit Magnetplate helps you next time instead tape ;P
£34.99 for a screw tray seems excessive.
Do you use lead free solder?
I hope he didn't, but lead free is trash nonetheless.
I did. Would not recommend. Lead free solder is hard to flow. It likes to stick to the iron, not the joint. It's great for the environment and for manufacturing, but we're all just doing one mod chip each.
if a V1 switch can be modded with RCM why put a mod chip in it?
Sorry for my
Ignorance but what does this allow me to do if I do this upgrade?
homebrewing unpatchable switches becomes available
How much harder is an OLED? because I feel like my 40 year old ass can do this with my usb microscope for sure! great video thanks mate!
not much! its just different points to solder
Please someone answer to me WHY we need to weld the thing to the cpu i mean why not a scotch or glue
Glue isn’t gonna make an electrical connection
Glue or scotch tape would be way too messy for this application, not to mention if the points move from exactly where they need to be the install won’t work at all, and will need to be opened.
Im sorry if this is just me being stupid but i cant seem to be able to find the modchip anywhere online. Could you maybe provide a link or a website I can find it at?
AliExpress
Man's using a baseball bat for a soldering tip. Be a bit easier with a thin tip.
I haven’t had an issues whilst using this tip, but I’ll take a look at some smaller ones.
@@TheModSmith look for a cheap t12 type iron, those have smaller but not necessarily micro tips
@@TheModSmith i will say, t12 is older though and not as sought after, you wont be buying quality when buying t12
Qué buen video, tengo una switch lite y quiero instalar el modchip, podrías hacer un video en una o es igual a esta. Saludos desde Colombia.
Thank you! The Switch Lite modchips are a different installation and have different flex cables to the regular Switch consoles, I may do a Lite modchip video soon.
I have a V1 switch but I can’t wait for a V2 softmod
It'll never come, good thing these V1/V2 modchips are very very easy to install.
😂😂 goodluck. Lmao
I really want to do it one day but I don't have the experience, how can I practice? Someone have any recommendations?
I’d practice just by doing some soldering, try some pin headers and when you can do those easily then pickup an SMD solder practice kit from Amazon, they’re about £5 GBP. It’s hard to tell when you’re ready, maybe when you feel ready have a go on a faulty Switch.
@@TheModSmith thx man
great video i don't have experience on soldering but after i watched this video i will give it a try what is that item that produce flux so i can order it, what watts do i need for soldering iron
Can u mod my oled
Can I install this on my switch without soldering?
Nope 👎
can do this with oled version????
The process for the OLED version is a bit different and complicated in my opinion
Get solder with resin core
Can this be used on the switch lite?
Switch lite has additional solder points than the ones in this video. So, no
It will work on a patched switch right? just a confirmation
Yes 👍
@@TheModSmith that was the fastest reply i ever had tysm
could i possibly ship my switch for you to mod? i could get the modchip and you could possibly mod it for me?
I don’t do installation services.
@@TheModSmith aw man ight

I've got a banned modded switch with the V6 instinct chip, but it won't boot into Hekate. Just flashes yellow a few times, then blue, then it boots into the original firmware. Any advice? Thanks!
initialize the switch or look for other options
where is the link? for the uf2 file?
I’ve added it into the description box.
Bruh, you got no disclaimers in your description.
I ain't doing this shit
Bro disconnect the battery befote doing anything
I did disconnect the battery, watch the video.
Can you add cheats to the games like you can on the modded Playstation? I do have a launch switch.
You made a real hash of that, you shouldn't of pre-tinned the cpu cable, no need. There was enough solder to repair the london bridge. You sure your used to soldering?
Anyone else notice he did all that work with the battery connected?
7:00 🥱
Fun fact- some "patched switches are hackable via RCM. I'm saying this from experience. Just make a paperclip jig and try it out.
This is a V2 switch, not moddable via RCM exploits. These switches have specific upgraded hardware that has heightened security features.
This doesn’t make sense as all patched versions have the same updated chip. The main difference between v1 and v2 patched versions is the battery.
@@piroko13 Well, he definitely worded this wrong, but from what he meant he was right. He meant that the V1 switches have their hardware vulnerabilities that are easily exploited, but he failed to distinguish between a V1 and a V2. Criticism is good but this guy doesn’t deserve to be told his comment makes no sense, as it has some sense.
@@piroko13 no, the battery is the same, what changes is the APU itself. V1 had a vulnerability that allowed modding directly in RCM mode. The V2, lite and OLED have a slightly modified APU which removes this vulnerability, and also improves the efficiency of the console. This is why the V2 etc have a longer battery life. They made this efficiency change on purpose to justify the change from V1 to V2, even if in reality they changed it due to the vulnerability.
