Cale Yarborough wins the 1983 Daytona 500. Cale breaks the 200 MPH mark during his first lap of qualifying but flips his car on the 2nd lap. His mangled car was unable to start the race and the record qualifying attempt was disallowed giving Ricky Rudd the pole with a speed of 198.864 MPH. The race was a competitive one with 59 lead changes and noone leading more then 53 laps. The early leaders of Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, Geoff Bodine, and Dale Earnhardt all had engine problems during the race. Late in the race only 4 drivers found themselves on the lead lap: Buddy Baker, Cale Yarborough, Joe Ruttman, and Bill Elliott. On the final lap Yarborough slingshots past Baker to capture the win and Bill Elliott edges out a 3-wide battle for second.

Cale imitating the engine noise 3:10
TY, I'm here just for this!
Same. David Hobbs DJD was awesome
Thx that's why I'm here.
Lmao funniest thing I've seen in a while
You da real mvp
Still funny as hell that Cale was imitating the engine.
It was fantastic.
Cale’s car was sitting in front of a Hardee’s just days before the race, that’s the stuff of legends.
This is beautiful. Back when the cars looked like the cars they were supposed to be. I see Chevy, Ford, Pontiac, etc, and I don't have to look at the name to know what it is.
Those were some stock cars back then. To win the Daytona 500 in a back up car shows how great Cale was.
As Ronnie VanZant & Steve Gaines would say " You got that Right"
The 60s & 70s were lot better. By 1970 they were doing 200 unlike here
Notice back then the infield was full as well as the stands.
Great days, didn't realize how good we as fans had it back then. Buick, Pontiac, Chevy, Ford. Thank you for posting these races, greatly appreciated. 🏁🏁👍👍😎
Cale making engine noises on the in car camera is the funnest thing I e ever heard 3:11
One of my favorite 500's. Cale takes the CBS camera to the winner's circle. I think this was the first race where the commentators could talk to a driver in a car. They asked Cale how things were going during one of the caution periods, and he said "things feel pretty good, so I'm going to take it to the front and see how it feels there". And that's what he did on the next green. That was a man who knew his business!
This commentator was/is a clown, the old guy in the 60s was cool
This was my favorite nascar race ever.
Watch the 60s races, lot better and better looking cars
1983. One of my favourite Daytona 500 of all time apart from many others.
Good old days man!
that cale thing is hilarious!!!
A NASCAR 'Legend' RIP 'Cale'😢 One of the Best
That Waltrip crash holy crap :( I cringe every time I see something like that, now. Can't help it. Still hurts.
Not to be that guy to kill the fun but he's imitating the sound of the engine to combat g-forces. Back in these days, jet pilots would do similar exercises to combat the effects of high G's, anything you can do to maintain your blood flow and breathing, likely where he learned it from. That's why he only does it in the turns because that's where you're fighting g-forces, not so much on the straights. Still funny to think about. Cale Yarborough, one of the most legendary drivers in Nascar history, driving around turns going "ARRRRRRRR" like a kid playing with toy cars.
The fact that Cale was imitating the engine going around the track just reminds me that people who race cars are just big kids with... something similar to a death wish.
I have some great pictures from this race, Victory Lane and 25th Anniversary trophy. Miss ya dad.
Cale was a champion driver.
Days Of Thunder..!
That's the car that sat outside at a Hardees...nascar used to be incredible
Good old day's.
RIP Cale.
I was on the infield on the 4th turn wearing his windbreaker Orange jacket I bought the night before from a vendor on the infield for a dollar next day was offered fifty to a hundred bucks leaving the gate!
Mike Joy on the call around 7:00 Mark?
Now we have pretty boys and corporate bullshit!.....and they don't know why the stands are empty!!! Damn it was a great sport!!!
I remember watching this on itv world of sports
Rip the 🐐
That first in car camera view with cale, was I hearing things or was he making car noises with his mouth.lol
Cale, you'll be deeply missed
This was TRUE racing at it's finest. The NASCAR of today should revisit all of these historic race videos. Then adjust today's "racing",if that's what you want to call it back to what made racing great. The segment format kills what they call racing.Quite trying to please everyone. If you notice today's races are never sold out,the seats are empty compared to back in the day.Jmo
It was very REAL back then. My favorite time in NASCAR!!!
@@jeffreyhenshaw1520Late 50s to the 80s
Dale Sr in a Ford Thunderbird, the horror😮
Richard is the King not Dale
🤣🤣🤣👍
How many cars finished on the lead lap?
Four.
0:21 Boogity Boogity Boogity! Let's go racing, boys!
After that, DW had a crash of his lifetime.
Shocking how open the cockpit was bac then, no restraints of any kind.
Even better in the 60s, a "stock car" isn't supposed to have all that goop.
How bought elliott beating all the other fords an everbody but cale in a out of date Thunderbird
Ernie's stump pullers were stout even back then
And using the brick bodied 82 T-Bird instead of the new 83 Aero T-Bird.
You can hear the 8-1 headers screaming
Darel waltrip hit the wall not mark martin
That was all motor wadell Wilson
👍🏻
This was when they began exceeding those crazy areo warriors while using smaller cars
The qualifying lap counted, he just lost his starting spot.
song at 0:01?
I just came here for this: 3:09
My Dad threw fried chicken at Cale....one of our best memories......
Who else is here because of the Dale Jr download trying to hear Cale make racecar sounds
Dale who? Richard Petty is the King
The super bird did it in 1970😊
is it me or did it sound like some engines were V-6 in the early 80s
The were using 180 degree headers plus a custom crossover pipe to get that sound
@@jimbosc They actually sounded very good if you were there in person, this audio doesn't do it justice.
Here from Dale Jr. Download! czcams.com/video/eeyp5BcS-Zw/video.html
"What's a Pontiac?"
I don't like this guy talking (the guy that keeps interrupting) he never gave credit to NHRA at the Barrett Jackson hot rod auction's, close minded. And NASCAR was doing 200 in 1970 back when it was cool
Same old ass white dudes with the 40s voices. Mrrrfff. Hu=rrrrrrr. Kurrrrrrrrr. Crasheeeee. Mrrrrrr. Err=rrrrrrrr. Noa.
