How to Replace Gear Shift Cable Grommet (common problem) On A 2008 Nissan Frontier

  • A very common problem I come across in a lot of cars, most of the times dealers will tell you to replace the whole gear shift cable but usually it’s just the grommet that’s went bad, and luckily easily replaceable.

Thank you for putting this video out. I have a 2005 Xterra and, one morning, it stopped going into gear. I opened up the gear shifter area and, like you said, the grommet was gone. I ordered one and it fixed the problem. I appreciate you sharing this with everyone!

Hey, Roy. I had this problem at work today with my 2010 Frontier, and my girlfriend was able to stop by a parts store to get a grommet and came by the job and it took us about an hour to fix it. Hardest part was certainly getting the grommet into that loop, and then fitting the loop back on the shifter - those two things took the most time. Anyway, big time money saver so I am very grateful for you and your video. Big thanks!

Thank you Mr. Roy,... I put mine in reverse, backed out, put it in forward and it kept backing up, couldn't get it to park either, frantic, I cut the truck off, and it wouldn't crank, found your video on google, after figuring it might be the shift cable, and your video makes it easily doable,.. Thanks again!

Thank you sooooooo much, this helped me out in a tough situation. Last night( Friday night) I was driving with my gf and I was reversing but when I tried to shift into drive the shifter didn't change.😰😰 I was horrified because I had just rebuilt the transmission 1 week ago.
We managed to find parking ( while in that awkward position) and walked home that night in the rain🥶🥶🥶🥶. the morning I CZcams the issue and It seemed like your video described the problem. I went and followed your instructions and was then able to use the cable to change the gear into neutral so it can start, and I went home.
    I have a 2005 niisan pathfinder btw
Now its just to get the grommet from Amazon or eBay
I am soo relived I didn't have to call a mechanic. Thank you soo much 🙏

Also the plastic gear selector cover can be released with a flat head or pocket knife instead of the cotterpin puller. And the c- clip can be removed by hand. I figured all this out when i arrived at work today. This video shows me that i can get the kit i see on Ebay for 24$ instead pid the whole cable for 45$

Does it matter which way the bushing goes in. After I installed mine I noticed I faced the side with the grooves out and you have the smooth side out.
It seems to stay in place...🙏

It’s most likely not the cable side but id recommend taking it apart again, press the white button again to release the locking solenoid and try to manually shift it around. Underneath the plastic cover of the gear shift lever (stick) there’s a track that it’s suppose to be on, make sure it’s on that track. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
