Gorod Krovi is Der Eisendrache's main competition for the community's favourite map within Black Ops 3. Fittingly, they're the most similar in terms of design philosophy; both fall back to a very Black Ops 1 style of basic progression, as opposed to the alternative systems introduced in the more controversial Shadows of Evil and Zetsubou no Shima. But where Der Eisendrache rests easy on those laurels, Gorod Krovi goes on to test the limits of that formula, and (without breaking that core loop) builds on top of it to find a balance where every style of play is viable.
"A Zombies Retrospective" is a series in which I play through each Call of Duty Treyarch Zombies map chronologically, and analyze its place in the series.

Are you playing MWZ? What are your thoughts so far?
5/10, it has good perks, weapons, and bosses, but it's nothing spectacular. I'd say it's about on the same level as cold war outbreak if not slightly better.

the mode itself is 5/10 for me because its a stress reliever for MP but it definitely doesnt have what you would look for as a classic zombie player, not saying the mode itself isnt good though.
8.5 / 10 ( I'm not an overly negative person or at least one that tries to fight negativity in a lot of stuff so of course this was higher for me )
I've been having fun since for me I'm more of a cold war in Vanguard player meaning my main interest in zombie is having the guns level up and doing Camos, But with MWZ Evan enjoying doing some of the harder stuff with my friends, just yesterday we beat the funny giant super red worm it was pretty awesome and a little intense

It is exciting to see analsys of these maps years after they've left the public eye.
just completed the EE after never really touching bo3 maps outside of cornicles for years, once you actually learn everything its alot more enjoyable then alot of steps in der eisendrache and zetsubo

After beating the Easter egg, I never touched this map again. It was a little frustrating but I liked the concepts
as a person who played the hell out of bo3 zombies, i never really found the map to be enjoyable (i actually played it less than zetsubou. still, your video on it was interesting.
Yeah i honestly really dont enjoy gorod at all, despite having hundreds of hours in bo3. I feel for me its that the map feels very "samey" room to room. There isnt really a great training or camping spot that is iconic and the wonder weapon just doesnt feel very fun to use. Thats just my take though

I feel lime your point about gorod fixing the box is a little unfair, cause zetsubo arguably did the same thing, introducing weapons like the mx garand, razorback, hg40 and the very iconic duel Marshall's which did make the box more worth spinning (mx had razorback were good hoard clearing weapons laye game and the dual Marshalls completely shred the thrasher)
You’re not wrong, Zetsubou definitely started in that direction first, even down to the nostalgia bonus with the Garand and the HG40. The difference to me is Zetsubou still had the KT4 which was just *so* easy to build and even better than the Marshalls for thrashers; there was some good stuff in the box, but it didn’t feel as *required* in the same way.
Personally I hit the box in Zetsubou a lot less than Gorod, basically never on an EE run, so that’s why I said that. But that is a personal opinion and you’re totally right, it did a lot of the same stuff and other people definitely value it differently!

Something to note about BO3 box and wall weapon design is that it swung in the opposite direction of how the previous games did it.
Take BO2 for example. The wall weapons was design in a way to have limit usage. Starting gun was good early on but drop off massively by round 10-20. Shotguns had limited usage with them only really being good in Origin due to the Remington being good against the Panzer and how digging give ammo for it.
While the SMG was good for points and how cheap the ammo for the gun was allowing for a cycle to take place. The Uzi is a special case where it did good damage, gave good point and had multiple area of buying the gun.
The only good wall weapon that was on most of the maps was the Ar-50 ( I think that the name of the gun. ) which had 2 difficult spots to get to in Tranzit and Die Rise before allowing the player to choose where they want it to be in Buried.
By having the wall weapon often not be the best gun in the game, the box then had meaning especially since it was the jack of all trades. A risk vs reward. You could get both the best and most consistent weapons in the game or you get the war machine. The Box was the needed risk within the player progression system, especially on multiplayer and it gave weight behind the player action. I could buy Jug and save up points or I could roll the box 10x hoping to win big.
BO3 had the opposite approach as everything in the game except for the Pharo had it positive. The Shiva for example can one shot enemies without pack into the early round 10s. Have Double tap, it will go into the rounds 20s. The wall guns were really good, often nearly matching the best box and due to this, there was a struggle to give reasoning behind buying the box in the round 10-30s which most people play to. I could spin multiple box to get the drackon or I could just use the Kn-94.
The box lost it value due to a different design ideology which meant BO3 lacked the risk vs reward element that previous game had and which later return in Cold War.
However, I feel the box gain back it value more so in Zetsubo with Gorod continuing this design due to the strength of the Marshalls especially in Multiplayer where not everyone can get the KT4. Thrashers and Manglers were threat due to the level design of the maps. Due to this, you felt like you needed to spin the box to get the Marshalls, Drackon and box shotguns just to make quick work of them.

I’ve never been a huge fan of this map, in fact I think it’s maybe the most overrated map ever. But this video did make me appreciate how it innovated in ways I overlooked. Great analysis as always!

I think overall this is a good review.
While the easter egg does make use of the map mechanics, this is still a pretty hard egg to actually do with the steps alone. This is especially the case since the steps aren't outlined, like how would a player naturally know to shoot a rune with the upgraded shield or that the rune even means something.
But in fairness, this is why I am excited to see what happens with Revelations. If we're talking easter eggs with obscure steps, that is THE map for it.

Man I absolutely love this game, I bought it like 2 years ago and just wish I could convince my friends to play all these amazing maps with me :/ sadly no one of them wants to spend 40 bucks (on sale) on a game from 2015 😂
I have to say i cannot disagree more on the box point. I detest RNG of wonder weapons, especially in coop. Having the wonder weapon being buildable or unlockable from challenges is so much better as it becomes dependent on your skills only.
Zetsubou putting in great weapons, or revelations having multiple wonder weapons in the box does make it a lot better, but i detest the toxicity thats built in with teammates hogging points to waste on the box to get the wonder weapon first, instead of working with the other players to set up the map
I always felt that this map was a chore to play, especially if I hadn’t seen guides on what to do after getting PaP. Cool setting though
My only problem with Gorod Krovi is the Wonder weapon. I would've liked a Seperate Buildable Wonder weapon mixed in the Mk3 in the BOX. I personally would've liked a bigger map but the Map is flawless and is the last Aether Map where it blew people's minds away

This is my favorite bo3 map
i’ve been saying this since gorod krovi released. it’s the only map where you can play classic bo1 style zombies without thinking too much while also getting the option to do modern quest based zombies for good upgrades.

Gorod Krovi is intentionally made to be the spiritual sequel to ascension, they even reference it directly with Gersh. I don't really understand why so many people worship this map like it's something completely different than every other map when in reality it's just BO3. I will say it's the only map with a good hat system and fun gameplay without doing any easter egg steps.

Gorod Krovi is my favorite map of all time. What you're saying is everything I love about this map and it's a shame that we have apparently never got another map that uses this map as a blueprint like Origins and Shadows of Evil.

Tbh I don’t think this map did much in terms of innovation. I have more problems with Zetsubou No Shima but I can respect it for at least trying to shake things up. Gorod Krovi is just an average map and the setting doesn’t feel like Stalingrad or a world war 2 type setting. The shield being a requirement basically is always an issue I have with modern zombie maps like blood of the dead and pretty much all of black ops 4 since the respawn mechanic is ridiculous and I think that started in Gorod Krovi. And the Easter egg is probably one of the worst easter eggs even with an epic boss fight at the end. The wonder weapon is cool though.

Weirdly enough is was my second favorite bo3 map but it is by far my least played map on this game. My cousin and I were trying to duo the Easter egg the day after it was officially solved for the entire rest of the summer it came out on. We never did and then like a year ago we tried again with two of my other friends and did it first try and haven’t really felt the need to go back to it. Though the memories and the concepts of the map without question put it in my second spot for this game and top 5 in my all time zombies maps

Just wondering, are you ever planning on covering non-Treyarch zombies modes like Exo Zombies or COD WW2? IMO I always thought it was unfair how so many zombies CZcamsrs disregard them just because they're not made by Treyarch.

As you can probably tell by the 3 month wait time, I’m very bad at making these videos, my process is just too slow 😔 I realized this and decided to prioritize getting the “main” series finished, so it’ll be done before the day I die, but when I learn to get better and quicker and have more time to do extra videos that’s definitely something I wanna do!

I feel like youtubers love this map but casuals hate it
Honestly I kinda don’t get why would casual players would hate the map. I mean it is a bit of a difficult map but it’s should also be the most casual bo3 map. Wonder weapon can be acquired from the box and can be pack a punched. And not only that pap is very simple and similar to der Riese/Ascension where you do something 3 times and then you get access to pap. Yeah like I said it’s kinda hard with the dragon, manglers, and Valkyrie drones but it isn’t hard to learn after playing a couple of times
@@ShowCM For me it's the layout. No matter how much I play it (beat EE with a friend and all), I still can't fully piece together the map as easily as every other map I've played. It's rivaled only by Shangri-La and Revelations in this regard. I can probably make a mental image of every map up to bo3 except for those ones
@@MathewWithOne_T Honestly the map layout is ok. There are a few areas which just circle back into the same location. And I get that some parts also look a bit similar. I’m used to the layout (especially after several round 100 attempts 💀) but at the same time for the first couple of times I played it was a bit confusing. And I can also relate to revelations being a bit odd as well although Shang I’m very used to the layout but I still don’t play it because the layout sucks lmao.

I love looking into new zombies content and watching deep dive videos like this but 9/10 when I find new videos they’re made by creators who fill their videos with “har har har women dishwasher” jokes that just make me feel like I’m extremely unwelcome in the community. I’m sorry but I really think this map is just kind of mid. The dragons not only don’t really fit but also the fire is annoying. The WW sucks and it’s rng out box. The steps require you to progress rounds and can’t just be done back to back. And then layout wise there’s not to many memorable camping or training spots. And the EE has a lot of annoying steps.
100% agree. Take out dragons, make a better WW and change the easter egg would be better.
But its still so mid. No room is iconic as a training place or camping and its all very samey. Totally overhyped imo
