GM’s 80’s marketing was the king of the jingle. Pontiac Drive - We Build Excitement; Cadillac Style; The Great American Road Belongs to Buick; The Heartbeat of America. At 48, those jingles are still earworms I can’t get rid of.
@@Sapp440 From what I've heard, the build quality on 80's GM cars certainly wasn't the best, but several of their engines were bulletproof back then (with exceptions like the Oldsmobile Diesel, V8-6-4, and a couple others). Many of these cars fell apart long before the engine died. The 2.5 Iron Duke, 3800 V6, 350 V8 - those were legendary engines! Even the little four bangers in the Cavaliers were pretty reliable from what I've heard... Personally, I think newer GM cars are even worse because the engines are trash now - 1.4 EcoTec, 3.6 V6, 3.0 turbo-fours, and those otherwise perfect LS/Vortecs ruined by AFM. Got to give GM some credit for at least knowing how to make an engine back in the day, even if they sucked in a number of other ways.
@@davydigger708 The problem was that the engines weren’t up to modern standards. The Iron Duke sounds and feels like a tractor engine. The 3800 was pretty weak for its size unless you went for the supercharged version. The main downfall of GM is that they went FWD. Nobody WANTS to buy a Front-Drive car, but some do because of price or capability in bad weather. Notice though, outside the Civic and the GTI almost no FWD cars are desirable on the used market, and the brands that do sell lots of FWD cars can do so because they have the best reputations (Camry, Accord). GM should have taken all of the money that they dumped into the W and N body platforms and used them to re-engineer them G and T bodies for the 1990s.
It came down to money. GM had to ax some brands to stay afloat. It was down to Buick or Pontiac. Buick sold like hot cakes in China. Pontiac was on the up tick in sales but it wasn’t enough. So it got axed.
You’ve got to appreciate their choice of language in this. You don’t get *in* a Pontiac. You get *on* a Pontiac. You don’t *drive* a Pontiac. You *ride* a Pontiac. They’re not describing a car here. What they’re talking about is something more like a motorcycle, a wild horse, or some predatory beast that you hold onto for dear life while it tries to throw you off with its untamable might.

The later fours were fine (as fine as any car with an Iron Duke could be, at any rate), and the V6 was never affected. Speaking of which, while I’m not going to pretend that the Fiero is some kind of legitimate exotic, I seriously doubt a stock Lada could keep up with a Fiero Formula GT (especially not one of the 1988s with the updated steering and suspension). The Pontiac’s engine has nearly twice the displacement. None of it matters. I was only commenting on the clever wordplay, not whether or not the car actually lived up to it.
@@TBustah I was referring to one of replies. To Fiero GT it couldn't, unless it would be a Wankel version. Rather had in mind Firebird Iron Duke, and Firebird 2.8 V6. There was a handful of commie cars that could win a race or even mop a floor with them. Not saying they were better, rather that 80s US limits combined with primitive GM technology gave terrible results. There were some European brands on the US market, obviously they had to follow the same regulations, and they provided more power from smaller engines, while meeting the emissions regulations. Well, GM fired an engineer just for telling them 'you can't convert gasoline engine to diesel'. They fired him, done it anyway, and obviously gave themselves head gasket issues. Speaking of lyrics, seems that David Hasselhoff kind of pioneered this, as he said 'it was never in the script' to call KITT 'buddy' or clap the dashboard, but he wanted to make KITT feel like a horse, so he added clapping the dash etc.

i used to get so pumped up by this ad when i was kid. Whoever did the marketing for this gave me a positive impression of pontiac for the the next 30 years. My brother got to buy the turbo solstice but by the time I have money to burn on new cars Pontiac was out.

Oh man! I recently saw a 1990 Bonneville for sale for a great price, and I SOOOO wished I could buy it as my first car, but unfortunately, I don't have nearly enough money yet to buy a car, but also, my dad says it is too old to be my first car! 😢 It's still for sale in SC.

When I was a kid I thought fliplights were just the coolest thing. The marketing department sure played them up for this ad! My grandpa had an '89 Chrysler LeBaron that had almost no redeeming qualities, but it had those motorized headlight covers and I always looked forward to watching them open up when my grandparents went home at night. When I finally get my '85 6000 STE back on the road I want to take a drive at night and play this song.

A lot of people talk down about 1980s cars, but it was what I grew up with and even then, there was such a great variety in what you could buy. Now, it's like "what color generic crossover you want?".

I think it just came down to timing. This commercial was filmed in late summer/early fall 1987 so the first '88 Grand Prixs may not have been ready yet to feature. They did get a lot of promotion on their own using this same theme.

The projectionist had to run it twice more before they would allow the Pontiac Director of Marketing to finish his address. It made the singer and composer overnight millionaires.
The Trans Am slide easily In oversteering when you pushing at its limits cause it is very heavy on the front and light on the tail plus the rear traction and the limited slip differential make the rest. But it's definitely a good thing cause you have real fun driving in this way although the lack of any electronic control make it hard to handle.
This commercial proves that our society and creativity is deteriorating or regressing, I know what the roman's that were born during the dark ages when they learned that rome actually used to have roads, society used, one of the few times in history when creative and inventiveness/ technology regressed.
What a time we are living in today. When a classic car commercial has better music than that which is on the radio today.
