I did this yesterday to 1 wall..it came out perfectly..it really is about patience tho! I used the same color too! At first it looked like you could see the putty lines thru the paint..1st they were lighter then it started to look like dark streaks..but as it dries you could NOT tell at all! I only used 1 coat..second coat is going down today! This test wall was the deciding factor on whether or not I was gonna do the whole house...and the verdict IS YES! IT LOOKS AMAZING..even tho it's a lot of extra work & a little extra expense..it is so worth it to me!
Yes Girl! You got it! Patience is key and you get it! Please keep me posted you can even send me pictures to my email I love hearing feedback!💕

Thank you!
@@WhatTheFoxSherriFox Thank you Sherri!! I can't even stop looking at that 1 wall..lol.. the transformation is AMAZING! It seriously looks like drywall. Everything had that cheap wood look, even the windows..but using white trim & the grey feels like a breath of fresh air! Now I've got to replace the flooring (Lord it looks like it's camouflage green 🙄) & do the other 3 walls. I will send you some pictures as soon as I get some "afters"..gotta purchase the light fixtures & get the furniture out of the way. This place is definitely a fixer upper (but that's a whole other story🤦♀️). Is that a southern accent I detect..😊..I'm in South Carolina!
@@azinfandellvr It is going to look fabulous, I can’t wait for the pictures and yes it is a southern accent😎Tennessee!
@@azinfandellvr How did everything turn out? I am about to start my living room walls.
My mom found this video... now she’s having me completely redo her panels throughout the house. Thanks What the Fox!
James Lozano 🤣😜you are welcome!
😂😂
This is easily the best video on CZcams for redoing wood paneling. I've watched probably 40 different videos and this one spelled everything out the best.
You're a lifesaver!
Thank you!
@@WhatTheFoxSherriFox can you put wall paper on that instead of painting?
@@YoungBlaze absolutely… I don’t see why you can’t however, you still need to fill the grooves because it will show through the wallpaper
agreed. I was ready to rip out the panelling or put thin sheetrock over it. This is a much better option.
I'm excited I found this
I just got my first house and the ENTIRE WALLING IS WOOD PANELING AHHH!
being a single mom and having LOTS of renovations to do.. this is SO HELPFUL
plus gives me some thing to do as my son sleeps!
thank you!
FrancescaJeanB I am excited for you! Remember to be patient and if you don’t mind a little more work you can always add texture but you still need to fill the grooves first, I am attaching a link just in case you want to kick it up a notch 😉 czcams.com/video/iF-wJurKg04/video.html Good luck and keep me posted!
nice video! If you use "speed set" joint compound from the start you usually do away with the normal joint compound shrinkage so no need to go over with a 2nd coat in most cases. Again nice video.
Thank you!
I'm in the process of buying a home that has a basement finished with wood paneling. This DIY video makes me feel more confident that I can easily update the space myself
I am so glad 💕keep me updated on it 👍
Sounds like my new home. Good luck and congratulations!
How'd yours turn out?
The best example of contrast and comparison I have seen.
Thank you
SO many houses have this paneling in basement. This is a great affordable upgrade idea!
My whole house is paneling and I really want smooth walls. Thank you so much for the amazing video
Karlid54 Unicorn? You are very welcome, let me know how it turns out!
wait how was it????
Juan Yanez it turned out really good!
Thank you!!! I’m doing this process tomorrow and watching you do so make it so much easier! Have a great day!!!
One of the best videos I've watched on this subject!!! I like the tip of using the roller with just a lil bit of texture👍🏼
OMG yeeeeeesss thank you!! We have wood paneling and I've been looking at vids on how to paint, but I still wasn't happy that the panel look stayed... I'm stoked about this, thank you!!
Chanisya thank you!
Great Info! Exactly what I was looking for, can't wait to get started!
Thank Heavens for this video!! My entire basement is wood paneling. Great info and thank you so much!
You are very welcome, thank you!
Thank you!!!! I too have been struggling with the ton of paneling in my home...I can't wait to get started
You are welcome, please keep me posted on how your project turns out… Thank You!
This is very easy to follow. Thank you so much! I'm looking to buy a house in Virginia, and there's a lot of houses with wood paneling and it's so dull, it reminds me of the 70's...yuuck! Now I don't have to dread buying a house with paneling. Thank you so much!!!
Omg you are a god send lol my house is literally 75% wood paneling lol and I had almost gave up on the idea of remodeling lol thank u
Beautiful Disaster you are welcome!
I'm weird I guess because I kinda liked my paneling but I am having to replace flooring and figured if I WAS going to remodel, now would be the time. Trying to get my living room, dining room paneling painted and my bedroom painted before the new flooring comes in
Same lol did you end up doing it? And if you did ; how long did it take to do?
@@keellyxo I did. it is very tedious work, I lost patience and have lines in some places. I do LOVE it though, the room looks twice as big! It took me a full day to mud the lines, then another day to get it painted (but that might have been because my sister is a perfectionist and very meticulous)
@@teampenit perfect! Thanks so much- my husband doesn’t want to to do it when we get the keys to our new house. He thinks it will be a nightmare. So he’s going to paint all the cabinets while my mom and I do it 😂 I know it’s going to take awhile So I’ve prioritized which areas I want to do it.
Super video. I watched others and they don't really get into resolving what I want to do. You explained things concisely and completely. NOW I am ready and informed of how to do my project (the whole house!). Thank you so much. Great job explaining.
Jan White thank you!
I found your video extremely helpful! This is a great cost effective strategy to fix dated paneling in my new home!
These are great tips!! Thank you for sharing this and for showing us a bad vs. good wall. That was very helpful! I feel like I can tackle my hideous paneling now!!
Strawberry Chunky you are very welcome so glad I could help! You got this! 😉
Iam so glad this actually works. lol I started this yesterday in a room didn't even think to look it up on you tube until tonight glad you're showing a excellent example it can be done now I can finish my project with confidence thanks
You are very welcome!
Great idea with the thick roller. I like how the texture looks
Thank you!
I just did this in my bathroom and it turned out lovely !!
That is awesome… Thank you for watching!
I looked at a lot of these videos by far YOUR VIDEO IS THE BEST. THANKS
You are very welcome, thank you!
This is the most amazing video on covering paneling walls! Thank you 😍🙌💖👍💐
Giuliana CR you are welcome! Thank you!
Sheri is definitely a fox! Glad you mentioned the primer at the end because my OCD was kicking in
Wow! You're amazing. Seriously, I'm going to try this is my own home. Thanks!
Zarp your welcome!
Brilliant. I'll be doing this tomorrow. My new house has a wall of painted paneling neaide the fireplace and ive neen figuring out what to so with it. This is it! Thanks!
I've been struggling so much what to do with my wooden panels in the livingroom! Putting up a drywall would add the thickness to the wall and so much of a hassle to do it on my own... but this is something I could do myself! Thank you so much for the information and the video 🥰❤
You are welcome! How did it turn out?
Thank you finely found someone that knows how to fix paneling correctly .... just purchased a mobile home and great home just wasn't happy with those panels , Now I don't have to pay someone to remove them then pay someone to hang drywall... I can DIY ..AGAIN THANK YOU !!!!
M. Miller your welcome, and thank you!
Thanks for posting this video. I am now going to attempt a small section of the endless paneling in my house.
April Naill your welcome and thank you! In the corners I would use corner beads I pinned a comment at the top on corner beads, Dietrich makes a great corner bead for this and easy to use, good luck and let me know how it turns out!
Good info coming from a guy who sold paint for thirty years.
Caulk the grooves, let dry, then mud. Good job.
I spent three day days going all the way around a large family room prepping for paint. 1 lap sanding the paneling, then 1 coat primer, then three laps around the room spackling the paneling lines, letting the spackling dry for 24 hours in between each application, sanding in between every coat, 3 times around the room. Then it took another three days priming the walls over those spackling coats, and spot spackling where need in between paint coats to cover visible lines, right over the primer paint. Finally satisfied with the prep work after two weeks, it was time for color, a dark teal. The dark teal paint went on well, but it became evident two coats was going to be needed to cover the white primer. Satisfied with the coverage, after a couple of days we started seeing lines beginning to reappear. Apparently the spackling shrank and was only covered in spots where the spackling was applied very heavily...
The moral of this story; just do it right in the first place and take the paneling down and put up drywall.
We didn't save a thing by being cheap.
The room looks,...OK,....I won't be redoing it, but just be aware, no matter what you do, no matter how many weeks of un-ending tedious prep work you do,
those lines are never going to completely disappear. It is wooden paneling. Wood reacts to humidity changes, by expanding and contracting.
Perhaps if we used quick dry mud instead of spackle the coverage would have been better, but its still wood paneling. It's still going to react to humidity changes.
I have done this to several homes and I’ve never had any problems with it, but I have never put it over top of primer either🤷♀️
Thank you so much!!! I've been looking for a video like this for forever.
Tony Ryan you are welcome!
Me too buddy
Great video. Not too long and not too short. Thx for the concise info and demo
Gary thank you!
I'm new to your CHANNEL! I've watched COUNTLESS HOURS of VIDEOS on how to paint PANELING. By far YOUR VIDEO is the ABSOLUTE BEST! Thanks for SHARING. And for taking the TIME to EXPLAIN!🤩🤩🤩
You are very welcome, and thank you for watching!
OMg so glad I found this Sherri thanks for covering this I had to downsized and I bought a mobile home that has paneling I ripped it out and replacerd with new and wood putty just didn't do the trick I can't wait to try this as this is for the guest bath and I want it to look exactly as the one I had in my full house before Lockdown happened :)
Gary Hollow oh I hope it turns out fabulous!
Think this is the first video that gave a clear up close view of the final product. I have about 600 sq/ft of basement that needs this. Should be a good weekend+ project. Alot cheaper than trying to track down someone to fix my plaster walls if I were to rip the panels down.
I am so glad this helps, keep me posted on your project!
Wow. It really does look like sheetrock. Interesting. Thanks for the upload.
linop412 you are welcome, thank you!
This is a great video! In the process of doing it myself. It's taken 4 days to get to the part of wiping down the wall. Tomorrow I will be testing for smoothness. One thing for sure....you have to have patience. Just want to say Thanks for the info! 👍👍
Barbara Hume you are welcome, I hope it turns out fabulous for you! Let me know!
I would never have thought of doing this..good job
Debbie Price thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to share
You are welcome… Thank you!
This was a god send. I hate the panels in the kitchen as it is so out dated. What an easy and inexpensive fix. Thank you!
You are welcome!
A well-presented video. I just purchased a flip home that has a lot of paneling. Your technique will save me a lot of work. I also picked up some great pointers in the comment section below with our answers,
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Im doing one wall in kitchen as an accent wall, thanks for the help!
Chris Chris you are welcome, thank you! If you want to add some depth to it you can try some texture czcams.com/video/iF-wJurKg04/video.html
@what the fox! i’ve fone this all day and gonna paint in the morning after i do the final sand. SO FAR everything is great. a lot of work but really easy with your steps
Juan Yanez That is wonderful, I hope it turns out great and I do wish that you keep me posted!
well it is finished! isn’t 100% perfect but at 80% and from someone who doesn’t know anything about this stuff i enjoyed it a lot except the soreness
Juan Yanez 🤣 I understand and good job! Pat yourself on the back and take a break from it, if any of the imperfections bother you too much just remember you can always go back and add mud or sand if you need to even if you have painted it, it can always be touched up and repainted that’s the beauty of it!
Thanks so much! I’m going to try this in a small bathroom. I was just scrolling through your videos and you have some really interesting content! I subscribed and will be watching all of them! 😁
Libby Stevens that’s great let me know how it turns out, I am a relatively new channel but will have lots more coming, thank you!
Thank you! This is a big help! I am updating a 1984 ish trailer.
Sharah Ahmath Jimenez you are welcome and thank you! If you don’t mind a little more work and would really like to hide The imperfections check out this video:

Super simple just takes a lot of patience, but looks fabulous when finished and you can do it before you paint after you have filled the grooves and sanded everything down, thank you again!
Wish me luck, tackling my kitchen and living room this month. Thanks for the vid 👍
Edward Jr you are welcome! Keep me posted
Thank you so much for your instructional video. I want to put up peel and stick wall paper on one wall . I did not want the the grooves in paneling to show through . I have an old mobile home so I will doing this technique throughout the mobile home to give it an updated look. 🤗.
You are very welcome and thank you!
best video I've seen on how to make paneling not look like paneling! Thank you so much!
Suzanne Christie thank you!
Nice video, I have paneling glued and nailed to 1/2 in plywood so I definitely didn't want to demo and drywall. Will definitely be trying this
Keep me posted!
I just finished doing this project and when I say it will beat you I mean it. Definitely a lot of work but the end result changed the whole look of the room
Yes, it is some work… But the end result is absolutely fabulous and not near as much money as sheetrock😉
You’ve saved my room renovation! I saw joint compound and I was so worried about it taking forever to dry.
I am glad it helped, thank you!
in the middle of doing this right now, came back to see what I am doing wrong because I still have lines, I thought maybe I had the wrong stuff or was applying incorrectly...reassured that having to go back over areas with more putty is ok!! this is almost like work! but I do love the finished look (I tried it on a small half wall in my kitchen first..WOW what a difference)!
It can be frustrating… But patience is key!
Just got a mobile home and had that ugly wood paneling thanks I'm going to try this
Michael D please let me know how it turns out and and be patient!
Excellent tips. Appreciate the roller selection sharing.
Thank you and thank you for watching!

"what the fox" haha that's awesome. I'm used to "what the flux," something we'd always say at the hardware store 😂
I looked for a video like this for days, not finding any I set out to try this. since I had a damaged piece that needed replaced I used it as my trial piece.
Several things I found out, it took 3 applications of mud ( I used the powdered 45 min mix) to fill in the cracks. After priming the surface with Kilz I gave it a coat of paint then a second.
And here's something I wonder if any body else came across. After the paint dried I still could see faint lines . I took some 120 grit sandpaper and went up and down on the lines of another piece of scrap and repeated the same process that seemed to have worked. This paneling is in a downstairs gameroom and is about 40 years old.
The paint roller I used was for smooth surfaces and only 1/4 thick. I'm only half way done with this project and will switch to a 1 1/4 inch nap.
Thanks for your video i believe you are the only one out there that has done this.
You are very welcome, and yes others have ran across the same thing if you don’t have enough mud sometimes you have too much and you just need to sand again 😉 thank you!
Thank you!!! 🙏🏽
Thank you!
Great video.
Thank you!
