This video walks you through the steps to cover ugly old wood paneling with sheetrock to look like drywall! Learn how to modernize your home on the cheap!
Oh my God thank you so much this was a genius idea I just spent the last hour trying to figure out how to put drywall up but this way is cheaper and easier and it looks just as good We’re about to move to a house full of Paneling walls I am definitely doing it your way.....
You have the most beautiful helpers! Thanks for this video. I recently bought a house and have paneling in my basement and want it GONE 🤣😭 I’m gonna try this first! Much more cost effective. Thanks!
Very good job! Beautiful family! You're kids look almost like my kids and they helped with our project too. We just filled in the grooves, sanded, primed, and used a 3/4" nap roller to add texture.
You did this the hard way. Simply use caulking gun to fill lines then smooth out quickly with larger scraper, let dry, quick sand, tack, and prime/paint.
Them kids make me miss the days my boys were that age. My parents would make me call before we came over so they could put everything within reaching level up high! Great helpers
I was thinking about doing the same except not adding the layers of mud. Fill cracks only then orange peel texture over everything to hide any in perfections.
What was the reason you applied the joint compound to the entire panel? Most videos just recommend covering the grooves. Less sanding if you just do the grooves. Did your paneling have a lot of texture on all of it that you had to cover up with spackle and sand out?
That is a great idea. We may try it on the remaining walls. I have to day though, a few months since doing the column in this vid, the paint looks great and there's been no bleeding. Thanks for watching!
So far so good. It's been about 9 months since we did it and have done more walls since then. My kids lean on it pretty hard sometimes and it has held up. I think the key is to let each layer dry really well to avoid future cracks
How has this held up? Did your paneling lines seep through? I would love to do a light color and hesitate for long term effects. Thank you in advance for your up date.
You mean a "thin layer of mud" not sheetrock, right? I tore off the icky painted paneling on one wall of my house and the adhesive tore off the surface of the sheetrock underneath in squiggles. I bought 1/4 inch sheetrock to put over it, on the advice of a construction guy, but I just saw a bit of a video where the presenter says 1/4 inch is TOO HARD TO WORK WITH!!! Feeling really frustrated right now. I am not an expert, but a do-it-yourselfer like you. I do not have adorable helpers, however!! I appreciate your videos. Please wear a mask when sanding mud.
The color yellow does not cover very well. Similar to a highlighter. You get a truer shade of yellow if you have the primer tinted yellow as well. The primer won't real yellow unless you get a deep base primer. But, even a non-deep base primer will do better if tinted some. When painting red, which also does not cover well, you get better results if you tint the primer gray.
I'm currently working on remodeling my mom's house and in 2 of her rooms she has wood paneling which are both falling off the wall. My question is why not just remove wood paneling? I'm still new to the diy home improvement. Please help.
Thanks for your question. For us, since our paneling is still in pretty good shape, and beneath is super old plaster, we felt this approach was the most ecomomical and easy for us to do ourselves. You could def rip it off and put up sheetrock, but that would likely be more work, more mess, more money. But it may be the right choice for you if the paneling is in super bad shape. Let ne know if we can provide any other info! And good luck :)
Thank God it's only for looks. It does look great, But just using Compound Without mixing it with a Hardener... Say you have a key chain hanging out of your pocket If you rub up against that wall, There you go a huge scratch across your wall. That's why Plaster dries much harder than just straight compound. You can buy the hardener to mix with compound but if your going to do that?? Why Not just get Plaster??? Compound Walls are done by Homeowners and Weekend Warriors and Rarely done by Professionals.
Thank you very much for this video! My 1970s house is filled with this depressing wood paneling crap. I’m going to give this a try.
Run paintable caulking down the seams, scrape of excess to keep it straight with the board, prime and paint.
Nice to have little helpers.. Always get them involved
.. No school teaches the little ones the real. Skills.. Great job mom

I just moved into one too 😭😭😭good luck!!
Same
Great example of how to fill in the panning grooves and get a drywall like finish.
Super helpful and creative!! Your little helpers are so cute!! 😇
You might want to consider wearing the proper PPE when sanding indoors. Those joint compounds usually contain silica and aren’t good for the lungs.
Also you can use your putty knives to scrape the high spots to save sanding time
Excellent!! Love the helpers, they stole the show!

You have a good helper there. He’s so motivated to help too! 🤗
Priming the wall after you clean and scuff will stop the stain from coming through
You did this the hard way. Simply use caulking gun to fill lines then smooth out quickly with larger scraper, let dry, quick sand, tack, and prime/paint.
Thanks for the tip. Will try it on the remaining wall!
Thanks for this tip! I have paneling I want to cover too and am watching videos like these for ideas on what to do.
Thanks for the video. You have a beautiful family :)
Them kids make me miss the days my boys were that age. My parents would make me call before we came over so they could put everything within reaching level up high! Great helpers
Your kids are so cute! Thanks for the video. We have the same paneling and now we know what to do!
Great video! Thank you! Beautiful family! Your room looks beautiful!
Nice job!! Way to get the family involved😊. The time lapse video sections was a nice touch too.
I was thinking about doing the same except not adding the layers of mud. Fill cracks only then orange peel texture over everything to hide any in perfections.
Fun and entertaining.i like your step by step. Cute helpers!
You could have just filled the cracks up with the joint compound then sand it and repeat till smooth
Thanks for this tip!
Would you not need a stronger primer to go over the panel board if you did it that way? I’m about to endeavour in the same project
Would it be quicker to do it that way? I'm trying to decide what process to do but I'm only filling in a very small area
Ok, so this video is now 3 years old. How's the wall holding up?

Thank you. I’m going to use your tutorial to paint a house I just bought 👍
Look at that beautiful hair, he is gorgeous!
Oh, there's two...Awwwee so cute!
Wow you did a good job I like !!!!😉😊
sweet little helpers! and thanks for the inspiration. i have panels i'm tired of too :(
nice!!! I too have to hide 70's paneling ....alot of it , you made that look easy.
Wowwww great job 👏 with these tow lil kids
How about putting a sealant on the paneling first, to stop the bleeding, then proceed to cover dips
That is a great idea. We may try it on the remaining walls. I have to day though, a few months since doing the column in this vid, the paint looks great and there's been no bleeding. Thanks for watching!
@@tarapeuticmusic Also you can use a sander on a pole so your fingers don't get all funky
This poor woman looks tired. I'm a father of three young boy's, so I feel your pain..
what hint told you she is a single mom? 🤣
Good work and fun but i got a question after all that time it will not cracked??? Especially if someone hit the wall??
So far so good. It's been about 9 months since we did it and have done more walls since then. My kids lean on it pretty hard sometimes and it has held up. I think the key is to let each layer dry really well to avoid future cracks
Love this!!! Plus my son name is Atlas as well.
Thanks! It's a great name! 🥰
How has this held up? Did your paneling lines seep through? I would love to do a light color and hesitate for long term effects. Thank you in advance for your up date.
It has held up well! No color seeped through. I think the key is letting each layer fully dry, even letting a couple days pass between coats.
@@tarapeuticmusic thanks for the follow up this is SO helpful!! 😍
Wow you surprised me!!
How bad is the odor for this particular product?
I don't recall noticing it much. Definitely nothing too strong.
Very well done 👍🌹 both the wall and filming by yourself ,and most importantly very well managing the kids 👍
Thank you! Very kind :)
Nice work 🔥🤭
What was the name of the compost that you purchased from lowes or home depot?
Thanks for your question, it is called Plus 3 joint compound, brand is USG Sheetrock. You can get it at both Lowes and Home Depot
How has it held up?
This does work but watching her spread mud and sand was tough as a mudder
Very important life lessons. Great job 👍
Did you get any cracks or peeling?

Install a thin Sheetrock on top of it3/8
I painted mine

Just put the thin drywall over it

How did your remodel go?
There’s probably drywall behind that. 😂
It takes 5 mins to just pull it off the wall
It would've looked nicer if painted off white, with it's original panels. Just my opinion.
Why not replace the panel with a drywall?
Some people like doing these type of diys and some people like me can't afford it.
Beautiful woman
