- This video will show you how I (an amateur with no experience) have chosen to hide those ugly wood paneled walls. I was looking for an affordable way to update the wood paneling in my basement. Removing wood paneling and then hanging drywall and redoing all the trim takes skill I don’t have or a professional which I can’t afford. This is the solution I found other people using!

UPDATE:
4 years later and it looks exactly the same as it did at the end of the video! It hasn’t cracked and chunks haven’t fallen off as some thought might happen. I’ve knocked furniture into it accidentally and hung stuff up and basically treated it like every other wall in my home and it has been great. I am told if you’re in a very humid area it may crack more easily but I’m in the Midwest and it hasn’t had any cracking over the years.
Again this is a DIY project done when I was still new to DIY home projects and it’s held up amazingly so you can definitely do this yourself too! There are also some helpful tips in these comments that other people have left.

I want to let you know that I came across this video when my Dad was very sick. My intention was to cover the horrid paneling in our basement apt and surprise him. For twenty years people told me that it couldn’t be done. That my paint would look cheap and would eventually peel off. I did everything you said to do. Come to find out, my Dad was dying and eventually past away in June 2020. He never got to see the AMAZING paint job I did because of YOU! Two years later, it still looks fresh and new. I used a semi gloss, “simply white” by Sherwin Williams. Three coats on light paneling. It looks rich! Since then, I’ve become quite a “DYI”. I finished the entire house. I just wish my Dad could have seen how great it came out. Thank you SO MUCH! 🫶🏼

Just as a little advise , to avoid cracking up the grooves (drywall compound) it's better to use (50/50) water and wood glue (use as primer) ,it will make much strong bond between the panel and drywall compound .😊

This is a DIY Affordable way to make wood paneled walls look like drywall. This video has gotten way more views than I expected so I just want to throw out that I am not a professional (obviously) and cannot make any guarantees about your walls but this method has worked out great for mine. If you are a professional and have a tip that isn’t “hire a professional” then please feel free to share your wisdom with the rest of us. Good luck with your projects everyone!

As a contractor who do this for a living.. I’m going to give one helpful tip you can use a heat gun/blow dryer/or turn the heater on to dry the dry wall also you can buy 20 minute mud

Thank you so much for this video. I have old paneling in a Florida room and this is a perfect solution!! I have already used joint compound in my small bathroom to give the appearance of a stucco wall and I love the way it looks!! I do a lot of DIY stuff myself, it's fun!!
You don't need to sand the lift-offs (that's what you call those ridges), take the putty knife and scrape against them. Sand only after all coats are done. You can use a paint roller and thinned down mud to get an even coat much easier. Etc etc etc.

I am definitely going to try this method in my great room! However, I will rent a pro drywall sander. I tried hand sanding when we remodeled our kitchen and we spent a week or two with little progress and maximum mess! Never again for this girl. When we finally decide to rent one, it was a dream come true. And the dust collection was invaluable!!

What a good idea! Thank you! I had been considering to hire a pro to change wood paneled walls of my family room to drywall for 23 years but something more urgent always came up first, like heater, hot water, air conditioner, roof, sidings, oven, refrigerator... oh...even exterior steps... Since my husband and I, both retired, I thought we might not have a chance to do. After watching this video, I plan to do it myself. I might put some primer (some kind of adhesive primer - I have to search it first) before putting "mud" on the wood panel. Thank you!
For anyone looking to do this make sure the paneling does have give to it. If it does then this is NOT how you want to do. Because once it flexes it will crack the plaster. Secondly 14:00 after you let the first coat dry don't use a sanding block to sand the high spots. You can take your plaster knife to shave off the high spots. Then use a sanding block to get it smooth. The way she is doing it you are just making more work and more mess.
I wish there’d been more comments like yours on the videos I watched when researching this 😂 could’ve saved myself a lot of sanding time 😂

Oh man, thank you for this! My house is all paneling (some poorly painted.. some not.. but all ugly 😆) and I was definitely deterred by the potential cost of ripping it all out to put in drywall even though that's the look I want. I had no idea this was an option.. looks like I found my winter couped-up indoors project!

You gotta love the internet. I found it easier to just put 1/4 inch drywall over the paneling, but found that they put some aluminum framing around the window which would have made the drywall stick out and look weird, so I was looking for a solution to my problem and now I have it, thanks.😊 Btw I like the round disk on a stick for sanding (don't know what it's called) a lot of professional drywallers us for big jobs, because otherwise you'll be sanding all day, but very helpful video.
@mica onyx How did you attach the drywall to the paneling? With nails or with glue? How about the moldings, was there a gap left between the new drywall and the existing moldings?
The drywall needs to be attached to the studs behind the paneling which can be done by marking where the paneling seams are or using a stud finder beforehand. Don’t use nails, use drywall screws. Nails will pop loose over time. No glue either.

Your video was so helpful in providing me with an idea for the paneling in my living room ... and there are 4 walls of it and a small area in the kitchen. So, it will probably take a lot of time for me to do it one wall at a time. First I considered having it removed, then just painting it, which I might do first so I can at some point just sit back and enjoy my new home at some point. So thank you for making this video, you make it look easy enough, it's just a time consuming project. But I love it!!!

Nice job and much appreciated. We purchased a manufactured home that has cheap panels on the interior with crappy wallpaper over it. I was going to get 1/4" sheet rock and cover them with that. This looks like a cheaper less labor intensive alternative to that. I think I'm going to experiment with one of the walls and see what happens. I just need to figure out how to seal the crappy wallpaper. Maybe the drywall mud will do that. I need to look into it. Thanks again!

Not sure if someone has already commented saying this, but white vinegar and warm water is also a great cleaner for walls and very cheap!

TheRejektid I buy white vinegar in the gallons by the case. Cleans anything with the right water/vinegar mixture. Even store name brands. Cleans any greasy, smokey, dirty surface like a charm. Plus spray plants and vegetables, it kills bugs too. Vinegar and baking soda are the two best cleaners in this World, (just do not use them together, LOL).
A popular furniture restorer said that you should clesn before you sand so that you don't grind dirt into the wood while sanding.

... Let me give you a HINT... I "Flip" RVs and run down houses... I'm on my 25th one right now...
I now use... Awesome (liquid soap) that you can get the Dollar Store... I use 1oz to 16 oz of water...
The stuff is amazing and I have used it to CLEAN Everything...
You could have cleaned this wood ONCE let dry and then started on you mud/joint compound. I personally put some water with it to smooth it out. The last House I did... I used "5"... 5gals of this stuff... I know everything about drywall mud believe me!!! LOL

No need for tape... BUT... First rule of thumb is CLEAN those walls really really really good... but build up of grim, smoke etc will hinder you putting anything on the walls.
Buy Heavy duty Baby Wipes... (This will be your best friend) Get the 3 Pak... believe me you will use them all.
But before you can use the Baby Wipes, they are for the finale cleaning... If you can use the Awesome you get at the Dollar store. It takes very little in a spray bottle, and Get GREEN Scrubies at the Dollar Store, or at Lowes (heavy duty) like what you'd scrub your pots and pans... I cut mine up in little squares and use the hell out of them before I throw them away.
Clean the walls... (let dry) after you wipe them down with the baby wipes... Mud the lines only, you don't really need to do all the wall unless you want to... You'll need to add a little water to the mud... whip it up or stir it up... Let dry... over night at least 12 hours... then lightly sand the wall if you need too... then you can paint...
I always paint the wall WHITE first... because you'll need 2 coats anyway, since the mud will soak up some of the paint.
Then paint the 2nd coat the color of your choice.
Remember, You only get TRUE color ONLY when you paint on WHITE...
I paint with only one paint... and I have been doing this since I was 18 years old... I'm 65 now...
Use Wal-Mart Exterior paint... nothing else... it is GREAT!!!!! and cheap... and it washes up very good.. I have pictures that would blow you away what this paint can do!!! It can cover black!!!
This paint is for the inside of the house or outside... (I just hand painted a Vintage Travel Trailer) after I hand stripped it down to the metal... It turned out BEAUTIFUL...
I hope this helps... I kinda got carried away....
Just remember this... be very patient... it's hard work, but worth it...
... and always do your floors LAST... Paint your ceiling first... WHITE is best, it makes the room look Bigger!!!!

.. when I said... add a little water to your mud... stir... I forgot to say... AFTER putting the mud on the panels, smooth out with (I use my wet hand) and THEN LET DRY over night...

So clean with Awesome/water mix and green scrub pads. Let dry. Wipe down cracks with baby wipes. Add a little water to the mud. Apply and smooth with wet hand. Let dry over night. Lightly sand and then paint.
Only apply 1 layer of mud? Doesn't the lines shrink and show up after 1 layer? Thanks

The only thing is... you need to CLEAN EVERY INCH of the wall before putting on the mud and painting...
I have tried to "skip" this and paid for it later..... Paint will not adhere to dirty walls.
I'm getting ready today to CLEAN the 1985 Class A RV... (this one was SO BAD, that the man gave it to me!) It was a Meth Lab!!! This is my second one!!! UGH Truthfully using a Steamer, like what they use to clean couches, works on walls really well... (I forgot about that)... especially when the walls are as dirty as these.. NASTY.
Plus they smoked in it, (the yellow celling)... AND be sure to rinse off the awesome/water first, let dry then right before you're going to paint, THEN use the Baby Wipes... you'll be so surprised what the Baby Wipes will show!!!
I'll think I have done a great job... cleaning something literally 5 times, then I use the baby wipes, and every time it shows me there is more to do... But again worth it, so the paint... will adhere to it, or it WILL PEEL off later!!!
To "Flip" Houses and RVs...
Rule of Thumb: It takes twice the money and twice the time... but you're hoping it will make you more than twice the money!!!
If you do use the Awesome... only put 1/2 ounce to 16 oz. that stuff is amazing... or AWSOME, I even use it in my laundry. But it does NOT take much, and then you'll have to rinse and rinse to get it off the walls... or anything else!!!! It is very concentrated.

Love this great affordable idea. Only thing I would definitely change is not coating the was with soap. Use tsp from any home inprovment store it is a pre-cleaner designed for this purpose and leaves no residue. It's cheap too only a couple bucks.

Nice video! Easy tip for cleaning wall any type of flat mop you like with removable pads literally mop that wall easy and fast .if you want to scrub it try scrub brush drill attachment or an electric shower scrub fast easy . This is very cool I think I will need it definitely thanks so much.

Fahliil Vahlok they have held up just like walls. The only spot to have some slight cracking is on another wall where the wood paneling was already severely cracked before putting the joint compound on.
Hi Kim! So glad I found your video on this. I just inherited a home that needs some serious TLC which also is full of bogus paneled walls. I’ll be spending lots of time and elbow grease transforming the yuck paneling into a beauty (or at least better than it looks). I wonder how your walls are a year or so later? Any cracks? Thank you! PS: I’m the messy one who without fail gets paint on me when I’m “helping” paint in my home and rental apartments. My husband is crazy neat and never even gets a speck of paint on him.

I'm glad you found it helpful! It is the most affordable way I could find, but if your renting just make sure the owner is ok with it because I'm not sure it could be turned back to paneling as easily.
Make sure your landlord is cool with it!
Also drywall dust is super fine it will kill a normal house vacuum must use a shop vac or a cheap vacuum. If you use a Dyson or another brand you will have to replace both filters and disassemble the entire thing to clean it.

Exactly what I was looking for..but I have a question for all of the people worried about the compound in the lines eventually cracking...instead of filling the deep lines with drywall joint compound, can't you just tape over them with drywall joint tape and then do a coat on top and smooth it? Wouldn't this prevent cracking? Anyone have any thoughts on this??... THANK YOU!
I am thinking of doing this but I’m afraid the mud will end up cracking after a years time. Can you please do an update video showing what it looks like now?
Came here to say the same thing. One good knock on the wall, and the mud is going to end up coming loose I would think.
@@Jess-vl9ks there is a limit but this is not it.... most panel grooves are only quarter inch wide n deep . If u go this pricey route the broad flat areas should be left with as little material as possible during application to cut down screening or cracking. Be sure to use a ventilator and sand ( screen) with pole to speed process. As stated by diyer u must prime and paint at which point nothing will be able to fall off. Check out : paint wood paneling like a pro: Benjamin Moore. It is more efficient but again sand with a pole and lung protection.
Looks like she skimmed it on paper thin...sealed with primer n paint. If so should be durable, but it is an extra step, just clean with tsp, fill with a good non shrinking wood filler, prime and paint. Do some test areas in a corner if u r doing a whole house or ask MANAGER at local hardware store for best performing product suggestions. U can do it
I did mine and it is holding up great after 7+ years.

My WHOLE house is paneled except for one bedroom and the bathroom (subway tile) and I hate it. We painted them all when we moved in, but I want to wallpaper my bedroom one wall of brick. Thanks for the great video.
Can I use the same drywall compound to fill the the paneling and to try and even out plaster walls?
Great video!! If you use the sponge sanding blocks, you can use a bucket of water to keep the sponge wet. Therefore, eliminating dry wall dust. That will add another hour or so for drying time or you can just run a fan for a few minutes. (15-30 ) Which is usually less than cleaning time. Plus, no mask and no lung damage. :)

I am a very experienced DIY'er, renovated a few homes and worked a lot with drywall. However, I have never done this. I have to thank you for telling me how much joint compound it took you because this gives me an idea of how much work this is going to take and perhaps consider other options. Also, if you're still responding to this video, I would like to know how your work is holding up. My concern is shrinking of the joint compound and showing lines in the paneling joints.
dnsmithnc its actually held up amazingly! The walls still look exactly the same as when I did this, except for one spot. Over a spot where the wood paneling was already severely cracked the joint compound has cracked as well. It’s not noticeable unless you get up close to the wall because it’s pretty small.
There were other spots where there was some smaller cracks in the wood and it didn’t come through the joint compound so I think it’s only a problem with larger splits. Only time will tell though.

Kari Coffey so far no issues, I’ve hung a few different frames up, haven’t put anything too heavy though. I assume it’ll be fine as long as you have a nail long enough to go through the wall behind this stuff.

Now that it's been a year, how has the joint compound held up? Would you use spackle instead if you had to do it again? I'm looking at doing something like this with deeper grooves. Thanks for the helpful video!
D All my rooms in my house are paneling and so I have been able to try both spackle (living room) and joint compound (kitchen). In my opinion, I prefer the joint compound because it seems to hold up better and overall be better quality than spackling. My living room has been painted for about a year now and there are a few little areas where the spackle is starting to crack a little bit. It’s fine for small holes or little jobs, but for something larger like a whole room then I would suggest going straight for the joint compound. Hope this helps.
The compound has held up perfectly! There’s a crack on one wall but it’s where the wood paneling was cracked underneath. I did attempt drywall on one wall and while it was easy it was way more work than is worth. To remove the wood paneling I ended up having to remove the door frame. Joint compound is way easier!

I bought my house last year, it's a 70s model and has wood paneling everywhere - while most of it is really gorgeous wood, the living room is super dark, textured panels and they're so ugly 😂 I want to try this method!
They look exactly the same as when they were fresh! No splitting or cracking, except on the one spot where the wood paneling was cracked underneath. Definitely recommend securing any cracked panels before going in with this method. Everything else has held up extremely well though.

help!! what if my wood paneling is flimsy? would the compound not just crack and break out if the wall pushed in a little???
Idk for sure but if your paneling moves I would expect the compound to crack.

Alease Cherry yeah it’s one of my biggest problems, every time I do a DIY I end up forgetting to get a before and after shot. I’m working on it for my next diy. as for the products I went over them at the beginning but I didn’t give specific brand names because it doesn’t really matter what brand you use and you’re gonna want a different joint compound based on your needs.

Using trisodium phosphate works great as a cleaner... especially if you're trying to remove smoke. Don't use an oily or waxy wood cleaner or you'll make it rough on yourself.

Yahzi they were on one wall, but only when super bright lights are shined on it. It’s easily fixable with another layer. Just keep adding layers based on how deep the grooves on your walls are.
