    Our entire downstairs looks like this with wood panels and I was considering to tear them down and then drywall them. I think your method will be far easier, quicker and cheaper and in the end may look a lot better too. It has some character with the lines of the wood wall but brightening it up will transform the space immensely. Thanks for this excellent tutorial!

    How long does it take for the oil based primer to dry? How long do I need to wait before I apply the latex primer and paint

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi There - We suggest checking the primer can for their dry time as it can vary by product. However, in this particular project it took 12 hours to dry. We started it during the day and let it dry overnight. Highly recommend you have windows open and fans going during the drying process. Just be cautious that high amounts of humidity can slow the dry process.
      Latex primer takes about an hour to dry to the touch. But we suggest waiting about 3 hours for latex primer to fully dry before painting over it. Hope this helps!

    How sanded down do the panels need to be? Can it be toxic to remove the gloss? How much of a time commitment can this be?

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 4 lety +6

      Hi Jaclyn, You want to just rough up the panels if they have a gloss on them. Enough to cut the sheen down on the panel. You don't want to loose the wood grain. We suggest the same effort you'd put in if you were to wash the boards. It is not toxic to sand the panel, however it can kick up minor dust so you could use a breathing mask. Depending upon the size of the room it's not much of a time commitment for sanding down the panels. Perhaps spend 1-2 minutes a board. Hope this helps!

I must mention my crappy paneling is not real wood. I think it’s made out of MDF with a photo type layer of wood on top. 😖 I am afraid if I lightly sand the painted surface that I could scratch thru to that crappy layer. Am I right to just leave the painted layer alone and just wash it and let it dry before new paint?

      If you do decide tofill in the cracks with spackling you will need to prime those cracks first with the primer he used. The spackling will not stick to the paneling. I did what you are asking about 3 years ago and it has not cracked yet. It is a time consuming process as you will have to sand after you fill in the the cracks to smooth the surface when the spackling dries and then prime the whole wall.

      Hey Britney, it's very easy! Over time we've seen some comments on the video that if you want to avoid the lines between the wood panels to fill them with paintable caulk. We think that's a good tip and wanted to pass it along!

    I wonder why he didn't fill the grooves so it would look like a regular wall. Is that possible? In my brain it would just be more sanding

      @AceHardware  Před 2 lety

      Hi There,
      It is possible to fill those grooves if you use paintable caulk and paint over it. Hope this helps!

    Is there a bonding primer that would work too. Oil-based cover stain stinks and is difficult to clean with mineral spirits.

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jason, Try water based Kilz primer that should work very well and easy clean up, like this one

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před rokem

      Hi Angela,
      It will depend on how large the surface you need to paint. If you bring in the size of your walls, your Ace can give you an estimate on how much paint you need. It will also depend on if you need things like paint brushes, rollers, painter's tape, etc.

    If you don't want them lines / Kris on the walls... just take some dry wall patch filler into the line then sand and paint... it would look like a regular wall

      @AceHardware  Před 2 lety

      Hi There,
      You know we received a comment with a great idea. Use a putty knife and apply PAINTABLE caulk. Scrape off any excess. Allow to dry until hard. Once completely dry you will be able to paint the lines.

    What about one of them fake wood panels? I want to paint it black in my garage instead of replacing them

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi B E, It is possible to paint them! We would first suggest that you bring a photo of your basement to your local Ace to evaluate the condition. In many cases fake wood paneling is painted by lightly sanding the panels, applying a primer like Kilz or BIN and then Clark and Kensington in the sheen and color of your choice.

    • @ChristopherJones16
      @ChristopherJones16 Před 2 lety

      black panels in the garage? Why such a dark color? White or light grey is better for reflecting the light since a garage is usually where you do work and want all that light.

    Remove nails-- what will hold the panel to the wall? Maybe set the nails and cover the hole.

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 4 lety +6

      Hi M - We're referring to nails that were used for decorative purposes (pictures, shelves, etc.) not foundation nails.

      Duct tape. Duct tape fixes everything. Wife backed up into a parking lot knee wall ripping the bumper cover off? Duct tape. ATF kick down your door to raid your house for having a full auto sear? Duct tape them hinges.

    Why not fill the gaps between the panels?

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  Před 2 lety

      You definitely could! It takes some more detail work that in many cases need some precision to get smooth lines that even out within the panels.

      wood is for the poor. its cheap and doesnt hold up to time, wear and tear, and bugs.. Tile/rock is the way to go. Youll never see smart rich people with wood flooring its always marble or granite floors. Itll last thousands of years. Wood gets destroyed easily by everything. Fire.. water.. dirt.. Its just crap. And yes many people had marble in their homes pre central bank times because people werent getting robbed by the banking synagogue cartel
