Good Friday: The Meaning of the Cross

  • Many people wonder, and even become angry, about God’s ways. In this video for Good Friday, Fr. Mike explains why God’s answers often seem like contradictions to us. While Jesus dying on the Cross makes no sense according to human wisdom, according to God’s perfect wisdom, the Cross answers all our most burning questions in a way only God can answer them.

God is Love. I think this life is filled with pitfalls, and getting back up is what makes us stronger. It's also a lesson in the balance of things. Think about it... you can't know what love is unless you've experienced hate. You can't have good without evil, joy without despair, happiness without saddness. What makes us human are these experiences in life and how we learn to balance. God is love, hope, faith, peace, joy. Love to all who believe in God, and know that Jesus is our savior!! Rejoice in his word.

Here's my 2 cents: In the end, it's about obedience...even fighting against our own impulses for creature comforts and putting God's Will above our own. Lent shows us how weak we are when we decide to "give up" something. That last week of Lent is tough. That hymn kept coming to mind: "Behold behold the wood of the cross on which is hung our salvation." It was on repeat constantly for me, and I got through that last week of Lent. It wasn't me. It was Him. I'm not that great of a Christian. But He's helped me alot these past few years.

    • @chrissonofpear1384

So... why were various angels not obedient? And how exactly could they have conceived of dissatisfaction, suicidal pride, or been ignorant enough, initially, to ever think Satan could win, in the slightest? Also, why did any retain powers, after their exile? And is this the same as Adam and Eve choosing, when they did not seem aware more people would be affected? And then be unable to perceive God? Unlike angels?

It's so easy to place the blame on God for everything that goes wrong, but He is not a God of Chaos and Sorrows- He is a God of Love and Mercy- the horrible things that happen are consequences of free choice. Faith in God helps us overcome suffering and emerge strong, maybe even stronger than before.

Father Mike, I wrote this for a friend who was going through some really tough times many years ago. I believe it is as pertinent now as it was then. I hope you like it.Feel free to share if you like.
    MY FRIEND
I know a man who has a problem
    he really thinks is great.
He walks around in a fog all day.
    You wouldn’t believe his state.
    What he doesn’t realize is
there are many worse than him.
The chances that he has the worst problem
    are really very slim.
His cross is small compared to most,
    I know, I’ve seen a lot.
I’ve seen the doctor, and the lawyer
    and the ordinary sot.
What gets me is that all of them
    are ready to give up.
And to these “brothers of infamy”
    I hereby raise my cup.
For no one knows much greater than I,
And it makes me want to swear.
That only ONE MAN in history
Really had a large Cross to bear.

Thank you Fr. Mike. Today is Good Friday, 2019. I have completed a half day of work ... and will be getting ready soon for Stations of the Cross at our parish this afternoon. It has been a wonderful and powerful Lent for me and my family. Your message here is a most-welcomed and appreciated addition to our journey. Thank you and God bless!

I just listened (with the assistance of a libretto) to Bach's st. John passion, and then listened to this video. This is making my Good Friday. Praise the Lord for all the things he gives us!

Yes - and maybe, find out why Satan kept any powers, post exile, and had any access to this world?

Fr Mike I’m glad you shared about being angry about the crucifiction. I wasn’t sure if it was ok to be angry for Jesus being crucified. I feel so sad he died so I could sin. I hate that.

Jesus Christ died on a Wednesday. Not on a friday.
In order to understand Jesus Christ, it is necessary to understand Prophet Jonah.
Judeans claimed that no prophet can rise from Galilee (John 7) since Jesus Christ was from Nazareth of Galilee. When Judeans asked Jesus Christ for a sign, Jesus Christ said that only one sign was given and that was the sign of Prophet Jonah (Matthew 12 & 16). Prophet Jonah was from Gath Hepher (2 Kings 14:25) which is in Galilee.
"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:40).
So Jesus Christ had to fulfill what Prophet Jonah fulfilled. So Jesus Christ remained in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights which was from Wednesday evening till Saturday evening.
Jesus Christ died on Wednesday and got resurrected at the end of Saturday. The Sabbath that came after Jesus Christ's crucifixion was a High Sabbath (John 19). Not a regular Sabbath. After the Sabbath, the women bought spices (Mark 16) and prepared them (Luke 23). After that, they rested on regular Sabbath (Saturday).

*In Roman times, if you were crucified, you are a criminal.* They would put the crucified in public display for days to embarrassed and humiliate them.
That’s still happening today. The demonic powers are still displaying their victory over the guy that they had framed- Jesus on the cross.
That’s why Jesus’s body is still placed on the cross- it’s too embarrassed and humiliated, and showcase their victory.
      It’s a *Trophy*

Nice video couple weeks before Good Friday. Thinking about my return back to my Church’s belief around late 1980’s.

God the Father, Jesus God the Son and the Holy Spirit, have been with you from the beginning. He knew you before you were created in your mother's womb. In my life, I know that God never left me. He was there even though I left Him. He welcomed make back just like the Prodigal son was welcomed by his father... with open arms. 🙏💖

My mother was absolutely livid, outraged with God for allowing Jesus to die on the cross. She was literally shaking with rage. How we got on to the topic I'll never know because we never discussed religion. I wish she had lived long enough to have listened to you and some of the others on You Tube. Your talks have taught me so much, thank you.

This Good Friday, I was Praying at the
lake, hating the Cross and the Barbarians who did such horrors..
I felt a stirring, looked down, as a wave brought an agate up to my feet. It was in the shape of Jesus' Purple Heart...
