A musical instrument is dead as long as it is not in the hands of its messiah. Once the messiah gives it the touch of fingers, it revives and regains life and soul. This is what can be said about these Ustads. Wow, what a rendition.
He was scary. So totally in control at the same time, breaking into song, chatting with friends in the audience, telling them to listen to a particularly good bit, but always at the highest levels of musical expression. From time to time, he would get into a trance; at those times, to be in the audience was truly to be in heaven. He was a feature of the performances at Mahajati Sadan. Bengalis loved him; he was as much Bengali as anything else; he loved them back, almost literally, as those who know his personal life will readily agree.
