We must also give credit to the recording company EMI for this recording, as part of their 'Music From India' series from the sixties. For many of us in the West, this series was our first introduction to Hindustani classical music and included recordings from many of the greats of that era: Villayat Khan, Ali Akbah Khan, Ravi Shankar, Prof. V.G Jog, Bismillah Khan, Nikhil Banerjee and so on. More than 50 years later, I still have this recording by Villayat Khan and several others from the series.

To share a little info, Khan Saheb arrived late and disturbed for some reason for this recording session and choose to play Raga Marwa. Tuning, testing etc took a while and studio-time was running out. Just when the first take was signalled, Khan Saheb decided he was in no mood to play Marva and re-tuned his sitar for Raga Yaman. Without rehearsal side one was recorded. Ingenius.

This is indeed the best ever of Raag Yaman played by anyone that I heard in the last five decades. What a clarity of notes, what an absorbing mood creation, what a perfect landing on Sama, what a class of meends that give absolute vocal-like gaiety to a 'bridge' instrument of Sitar. I have heard this piece on countless occasions but each time I enjoy it to the highest. Salute one and only wonder - Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb.
