Everybody who played sims online is old and jaded and wont be offended by anything here. I played TSO when I was a minor and I was once solicited to work in one of these cyberbrothels. I told my in-game "sister" about it because it was by someone we knew (her in-game "husband", actually). They "divorced" because of it and she sold me her house before she eventually stopped playing. Even that experience was traumatic for me, I can't imagine how it must've been for those who actually did the work. Thank you for bringing this subject to light. This is why I don't want The Sims to be an online game ever again.

Even a game with as strict and even broken moderation as roblox has games that is innapropriate in a sexual way for kids, and groomers. The best way to keep kids safe is to teach them about the warning signs that someone has bad intentions in mind for them. Reintroduce stranger danger. Honestly I feel like in the early 2000s it was such a wild west on the internet for this stuff. Even Habbo Hotel had people doing odd things in the rooms. Doesn't matter if the avatar is g-rated, if theres the ability to chat, people are gonna take it to a sexual place.
For me it was Small Worlds. I used to roleplay as someone who worked in a hotel and checked people in/cleaned rooms and my 10 year old self could not even comprehend some of the weird sht I would walk in on lol

It’s going to be primarily single player, but much like “animal crossing” people will be able to visit IF you enable it privately (likely via friendship or codes) and they will be able to interact with your world, and POTENTIALLY build together. But incredibly limited. They’re clearly basing it off the current sims 4 multiplayer mod where players can join your game and you can build houses etc together. But it won’t be open to public and it will be limited, I’m guessing at most 6 people will be able to visit you. I think the better term for this is CO-OP rather than multiplayer genre wise.
Played the game from the very beginning at launch and can confirm these brothels were definitely a thing especially in Alphaville. Amazed that someone did enough research to make a video about them. Love your channel!

SL was wild i remember being recruited to be a stripper on the TEEN GRID!!! after the merge it was even worse. the brothels and bloodlines cults were insane, but griefing them was pretty fun.
In defense of Second Life, it has always been an adult game. They had a small period of time where they allowed (with parental approval) older teenagers to join the game, but you were limited in what you could do. After a certain point, there needs to be a degree of understanding there - you were stepping into an adult space, that was never marketed as anything *other* than an adult space.

I was surprised to learn about this too. But you've got to understand that when The Sims first came out, the developers had an older teen/adult audience in mind with emphasis on satirizing capitalism and references to older pieces of media that would fly over the heads of kids. As the franchise became more popular, however, EA noticed how kids were the ones playing the game, so they started gearing more and more towards that demographic. It's like the Animal Crossing series. The Nintendo GameCube version was a little edgier with rude villagers and a Harvest Festival story where the player had to retrieve silverware for Franklin the turkey who was scared of being eaten. But the later games would gradually sanitize the franchise to the point that players felt that the villagers were bland and the gameplay was dumbed down. But that's just a theory. A Game Theory!
I feel like new Sims game developers should be required to know about all the weird layers of the sims community so they can properly represent the culture. Not for the faint of heart
I've seen some comments that say that life mmos shouldn't have online features. I was groomed online as a child through a game similar, and I don't think the solution is to get rid of games like that. I think the solution is much simpler, people should be age verified to play games like this. They should never be all ages, or aimed at kids. Then you also have your ID verified to your username, so if anyone does anything abhorrent they're easily identified by having already provided a photo of themselves holding their ID. The only downside is people without formal identification wouldn't be able to play, but isn't this better than saying an entire genre of game can't exist.
here's an idea: instead of giving your sensitive personal information to strangers who could do literally anything with it, let alone hackers, just... have parents supervise their children's online experiences again.
Learning about this makes me shudder over Project Rene, since they're obviously trying for this again. They don't seem to understand the ramifications of a simulator becoming an online experience.
I would love you to do a video about the Prescott family of sims4, in copper dale it is said that Molly’s grandfather is actually a spirit in copper dale, yet he is not a cas ghost or playable sim. He is simply a mist/ object that is found in this really creepy cabin. I wonder why he’s dead there and why his ghost is like that. And why he’s far from the Prescott house. I find this to be really creepy and interesting. 😭 also you can’t only see him far, and never close to your sim, when you go up to the cabin or near your sim you’ll not be able to see him but if you zoom a bit far you’ll see him…it’s so scary.
Travel to the thrift tea store. And go far out the south way turning completely around. You will see the ocean and near it, there is a trail to this cabin in which your sims can actually go to it. During the times of the night you’ll be able to see him.
lol we had world trading at the time, using the bubble friend system as a kind of yelp system. we traded in game cash from say test center to say blazing falls. we also traded pets such as the "tiger" usually the "rare" breed dogs/cats for high amounts of money as well. I wasn't in the brothel situations but knew about them. everyone also seemed to have a mafia, gang and some sort of "gov" cops and robbers sort of thing.

What a nightmare! I'm not a fan of MMOs, and this is why. I'd be much more interested in a smaller-scale concept, where players can connect their neighborhoods/worlds with their friends. I love having my friends' sims as NPCs in my game!

I feel like new Sims game developers should be required to know about all the weird layers of the sims community so they can properly represent the culture. Not for the faint of heart

I've seen some comments that say that life mmos shouldn't have online features. I was groomed online as a child through a game similar, and I don't think the solution is to get rid of games like that. I think the solution is much simpler, people should be age verified to play games like this. They should never be all ages, or aimed at kids. Then you also have your ID verified to your username, so if anyone does anything abhorrent they're easily identified by having already provided a photo of themselves holding their ID. The only downside is people without formal identification wouldn't be able to play, but isn't this better than saying an entire genre of game can't exist.
here's an idea: instead of giving your sensitive personal information to strangers who could do literally anything with it, let alone hackers, just... have parents supervise their children's online experiences again.

Learning about this makes me shudder over Project Rene, since they're obviously trying for this again. They don't seem to understand the ramifications of a simulator becoming an online experience.

I would love you to do a video about the Prescott family of sims4, in copper dale it is said that Molly’s grandfather is actually a spirit in copper dale, yet he is not a cas ghost or playable sim. He is simply a mist/ object that is found in this really creepy cabin. I wonder why he’s dead there and why his ghost is like that. And why he’s far from the Prescott house. I find this to be really creepy and interesting. 😭 also you can’t only see him far, and never close to your sim, when you go up to the cabin or near your sim you’ll not be able to see him but if you zoom a bit far you’ll see him…it’s so scary.
Travel to the thrift tea store. And go far out the south way turning completely around. You will see the ocean and near it, there is a trail to this cabin in which your sims can actually go to it. During the times of the night you’ll be able to see him.
Grabbing a snack? More like eating breakfast while I watch this.

lol we had world trading at the time, using the bubble friend system as a kind of yelp system. we traded in game cash from say test center to say blazing falls. we also traded pets such as the "tiger" usually the "rare" breed dogs/cats for high amounts of money as well. I wasn't in the brothel situations but knew about them. everyone also seemed to have a mafia, gang and some sort of "gov" cops and robbers sort of thing.

Glad I never played The Sims Online. I play the Sims to escape the nuisances of the real world, not to have to endure some of the worst parts of it.

I’m so happy I stopped playing Sims Online after a day or two. Seems like the most powerful sims on the server were bigoted, pervy trolls. It was definitely not welcome to a diverse group of simmers.
I remember in Second Life, they had SIMS (land parcels in Second Life, basically a server) for adults to have smexxx with ch*ld avatars back in the day. The FBI investigated it and shut the server down. This was when Second Life was taken extremely serious and they had SL police.

What a nightmare! I'm not a fan of MMOs, and this is why. I'd be much more interested in a smaller-scale concept, where players can connect their neighborhoods/worlds with their friends. I love having my friends' sims as NPCs in my game!
