  • This video shows how to disassemble and reassemble a MacPherson style strut using a spring compressor and other basic tools. The new struts in this video are Bilstein B8 5100's Ride Height Adjustable struts. These will be eventually installed on my 2019 GMC Canyon - All Terrain gas 3.6L vehicle. See link to install videos below.

    These struts are adjustable for various ride heights, using a snap ring and Bilstein's seat adapter. Using parts from the factory strut assembly, you can swap over everything you need to assemble the new Bilstein unit to install on your truck.
    Ride Height Settings:
    1st Notch - Factory Height (no lift)
    2nd Notch - 0.7" Front Lift
    3rd Notch - 1.3" Front Lift
    4th Notch - 1.9" Front Lift
    5th Notch - 2.6" Front Lift (Some Models*)
    *NOTE: 2wd gas and 2wd/4wd diesel models should not use the 2.6" setting per Bilstein manufacturers instructions.

      @@fondupot I've been in 2015 Colorado Z71 purgatory for 6 months. In Oct I got new tires and struts. After 4 shops (last one Chevy dealership) all of my problems except one went away. Evidently I got a bad, brand new, Bilstein 5100 strut. The last problem is a steering wheel shimmy (or pulse) in (some) right curves at 35-45mph. It doesn't keep me from driving on the highway any more, but it worries me. I had the steering wheel recall in 2021.
      Chevrolet did a $185 diagnostic, and the lame service writer quickly mentioned a "power steering module." Can't find anything on that. Any ideas? thanks and have a Blessed Sunday!

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @ITigerbaum yea there’s been some issues with the power steering racks in some models. I think the remedy is to replace the rack and then make sure it’s recalibrated correctly.

    Great video. It's funny I'm about to put the 5100's on my 2019 Colorado. I pretty much decided on those shocks because of your video a couple years ago with the same struts. How did your last Colorado ride with these on?

    • @fondupot

      Loved them on my Colorado. Been long overdue on my Canyon. I want to put them on my Silverado next. I’ll have an install video for Colorado/Canyon next Friday so stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching!

    That means with those shocks you won’t need the rough country level kit, right

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před 27 dny

      Correct. These have a built in leveling kit. And you can choose the height. I would not stack an RC kit with these. It will ride terrible.

    1:40 I have the hockey puck like leveling kit on my truck. I am due to replace my front shocks and struts. With these Billstein 5100’s I can adjust the Level? Does this mean I don’t need those pucks on top of my struts anymore ?

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před 8 měsíci

      You can set the Bilsteins to then factory ride height and leave your hockey puck. Or remove your hockey puck and set the bilsteins to whatever level you want. But I wouldn’t recommend doing both the hockey puck and any extra lift from the bilsteins. This would essentially be stacking leveling kits and it will make your truck ride like a tank.

      @@fondupot Is there a benefit to removing the pucks and setting the suspension level vs leaving the suspension level stock and adding the pucks ?

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před 8 měsíci

      @LilManMoe It’s really just personal preference. I never liked the hockey puck style leveling kits. But both ways will net the same benefit of leveling the front end.

    Did this give this change the ride quality? Ive been looking to help smooth the ride if possible.

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před rokem

      If you’re looking for better comfort, these won’t provide it. While they are a smooth ride, they are stiffer but more controlled than the stock shocks. I prefer it this way. The Bilstein 4600 might be better for ride comfort.

    • @danfields1562
      @danfields1562 Před 2 měsíci

      Buy a new spring meant for a lift instead of using the stock one and then leave the shock clip at the lowest setting

  • @Cozyyota
    @Cozyyota Před rokem +1

    So with the bilstein instructions, the 2.6” is okay for 4wd gas model?

    • @fondupot
      @fondupot  Před rokem +1

      “Ok” is subjective. But, that’s how I interpret the instructions. I would consult with Bilstein directly if you have other questions. My opinion: I believe the top notch is too much for a “stock” setup. To use the top notch successfully and safely I’d recommend new upper control arms that have high clearance ball joints and some sort of differential drop, and definitely will need the sway bar relocation. otherwise you will be maxing out the suspension geometry that will cause a less than ideal ride and less longevity of suspension components.
