      If it was, the anime franchise would end easily and quickly.
      The authors of Digimons took this way, so they ended the season somewhere and started another season with a full new cast. Again. Again. And again.

      The visual edits were done to the Japanese version, 4Kids was just given those copies as the versions to dub. It's noticeable because there are a couple of episodes where 4Kids got the pre-edited versions instead.

    "No one's going to watch a movie about monsters, and now you want to make a movie about graves?"
    Fast forward and Totoro (the "monster") is the mascot for the company and Grave of the Fireflies is one of those few animated films that gets put on lists of "high art" films all over the place.

I showed him one of the animatics for the last song in Hamilton, and he says "Is this some sort of Japanese opera about Thomas Jefferson". No. It's a fan work for an Opera about Alexander Hamilton and if you watched more than 5 seconds you'd see that Jefferson wasn't the main character. Also not Japanese. It is an opera, though, I guess. A hip-hopera.

    Some additional trivia on the VO stuff for this video!
    2:03 - ORIGINALLY, Ash's name was, in fact, still going to be "Satoshi", but this didn't last and eventually localized/Americanized names were used instead. "Alex" was also cited as one of them in addition to Casey. Veronica has talked about this in a few interviews and on convention panels. She also mentioned that she was cast, then replaced (with the intention of using a child actor), then re-hired again. Episode 1 was said to be recorded a couple of times over, including with the different character names. "Ash" and "Gary" were also used as the base names for the player-character and rival in Red & Blue, so it's also possible these names were chosen in collaboration with Nintendo.
    2:14 - Rachael Lillis' additional voiceover for Pikachu during some of these early episodes in part due to other characters' recordings being placed over Pikachu's sounds, so in some cases the original Japanese audio wasn't usable (this isn't a problem anymore due to current recording technology and software)...BUT, in addition, I believe that Rachael was also in consideration at the time to voice Pikachu entirely. Admittedly, I can't remember if she talked about this on a panel or if it was from a conversation with her I had personally, but I do remember her talking about something along the lines of "I was, then I wasn't, then I was, then I wasn't" Pikachu's voice during the early episodes. Take that one with a grain of salt, though.

    • @Compucles
      @Compucles Před 5 lety +6

      Yeah, these days just about all dubbed anime except "Pokémon" keep the characters' original Japanese names, but 4Kids thought we couldn't handle too much Japanese culture and renamed most characters in most of the anime they dubbed (among other things), which is part of why their dubs are considered so lousy and why they went out of business, although the first 8 seasons of Pokémon is one of their better dubs.

    • @noircore
      @noircore Před 5 lety +4

      @@Compucles I agree that 4Kids flubbed, but I doubt the renaming thing causes a dub to suffer just because it's renaming stuff out of Japanese culture. Using a video game series as an example, Ace Attorney renames everyone but still is a popular and decent visual novel series, even if it's had some rotten eggs.
      Besides, 4Kids are not the ones who changed up the names of characters actually from the games; that's all on the video game localizers.

    • @Kirbopher15
      @Kirbopher15 Před 5 lety +14

      @@Compucles Notice what you just said there, though? Pokemon was ""one of their better dubs""...and YET, the names were all localized in it? Regardless of the fact that it's not entirely accurate to the Japanese version (and for the record, the script for the series' current episodes is FAR more faithful to the original compared to when 4Kids did it), the truth of the matter is, 4Kids helped shaped the English version of the show in a way that made it VERY accessible to an American audience...and in some small part, it helped make the franchise as a whole explode with popularity AND helped start the boom of Anime fandom for the US in general. Not to mention, while this show was arguably "butchered" from its original content, the same can be applied to Yu-Gi-Oh!'s success due to how the show was handled. Yes, 4Kids did some very unsavory things to a lot of anime series...but whether we like it or not, they also helped put Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! on the map AND if it weren't for them, it's arguable that we wouldn't have anime conventions literally every weekend in North America today.

    • @Compucles
      @Compucles Před 5 lety +1

      @@Kirbopher15 You may have a point with Pokémon (and I do admit that most of the name changes were made necessary by the video game localizations in the first place), but I bet the original Yu-gi-oh! series (and by extension the sequels) would've been even more popular with Western audiences with a more accurate English dub. The same is also true for series like "Sailor Moon" and "Cardcaptor Sakura" (although those latter two cases were also limited by American broadcast standards regarding homosexual references).
      Besides, there were other more accurate English anime dubs for 90's gateway series like "Ranma 1/2" and the uncut versions of "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball Z" that were just as important as the various butchered dubs in establishing anime popularity in the West.

  • @buchiklop110
    @buchiklop110 Před 5 lety +110

    Brock actually says the whole "She'll be fun in eight years" several times in the Japanese version, including to Casey (the rival in Johto).
    Also, the more common translation of the line from Aim to be a Pokémon Master is typically "under that girl's skirt" rather than "in that girl's skirt."
    The whole thing about Ash being a Pokémon Master ending the show is stupid for many reasons, the major being that the show hasn't actually said WHAT being a Pokémon Master entails. It can't be winning the Pokémon League, since characters like Lance or Cynthia are never called Pokémon Masters in the show.

    • @videosalpaso5323
      @videosalpaso5323 Před 5 lety +8

      Also winning a league dosent make you Pokemon Master, but the writters dosent get it or explain it.
      There is an amourshipping fan comic "Road to Master" i think that happens 10 years after the XYZ ending, it says that the one who conquers all 7 leagues (Kanto-Alola) as Champion will become Pokemon Master, but nobody ever did it, Ash won 6 out of 7 in this time gap, win the last one in Kalos, became PM and marry Serena who is Kalos Queen.
      Here you have a meaning of what Master means, why is difficult and why even the champions arent Masters and is an 8 chapter fanfic, not even the real deal.

    • @Compucles
      @Compucles Před 5 lety +6

      It's generally assumed that all regional Elite 4 members and Champions are considered Pokémon Masters. In fact, Prima *cough* Lorelei *cough* was specifically stated to hold the title.
      You're right that winning a single Pokémon League isn't enough to qualify as a Master, as the anime once pointed out what the next step was after winning a League Tournament, although I don't remember what that next step is.

    • @LordPichuPal
      @LordPichuPal Před 5 lety +1

      I always assumed that the goal was for him to catch all the Pokemon in a region, as well as win the league championship. But given he never catches everything (and constantly releases everything before going to the next region) and doesn't always win the Pokemon League either in a given region (like Kanto), it's not likely he'll ever become a master.

      He's using them for the audience who are the same age as the girls. Aging them up to 18+ doesn't serve much purpose, as the 11-13 year old viewers aren't gone to be interested in adults, and I shudder to think any adults are gone to watch Pokemon for eye candy... • @buchiklop110
      @buchiklop110 Před 5 lety +45

      He actually did write a few novels of his view of the Pokémon world back during the original Gen 1 days. It pretty much lacked all of the fantastical elements of the show. Ash always had to worry about food since he didn't have a steady stream of money and had to be careful not to get seriously hurt by Pikachu and Charmander's attacks. Team Rocket were more straightforward thieves and lacked their more flamboyant traits. The world was also a bit more grounded, with Pokémon Training being depicted as something similar to being a wage slave or salaryman job. It was very, very dry.
      And while I do think Takeshi Shudo had a lot of good ideas, not all of his preferences were good. He said in one interview that he greatly disliked most evolved Pokémon, which is why Kanto and Johto had Ash's team composed of so many Basic-stage Pokémon and why we got a Pokémon League matchup of Spearow vs. Tentacool.

    Talking about the Jynx controversy without explaining what the original design mimicked/parodied is a bit unprofessional: it is most likely Jynx mimicked the Japanese Ganguro fashion, characterized by bleached hair, fake tan, and brightly colored lipstick, and saw its peak of popularity between the 1990s and the early 2000s; this is mixed with mythological elements from the Yama-uba, depicted with a similar dress and hairstyle to that of Jynx and said to have control over snow. In addition, "Yamamba", another term used to refer to the Yama-uba, was used to describe the more extreme end of the Ganguro fashion, tying the two theories together.

      I mean, it's Japan. Compare the outfits to the male and female Player Characters.
      Red has a long shirt and jeans while Leaf has a sleeveless top and a miniskirt.
      Ethan has a normal shirt and shorts that extend past his knees while Kris wears spandex and Lyra practically wears Daisy Dukes.
      Brendan is completely covered while May's shirt acts like a skirt and she wears spandex shorts that stop below the knees. Even in the remakes, May shows a lot more skin than Brendan.
      Lucas got the typical shirt/jeans combo while Dawn got a micro miniskirt so short it barely went past her hips. And in Platinum, her new look made many people wonder if she was actually wearing anything at all under her coat.
      Hilbert got a full sleeve jacket and jeans, while Hilda got a sleeveless shirt and short shorts.
      Calem's outfit has his full body covered while Serena gets another sleeveless top, a skirt, and over the knee socks. That's not even mentioning the MULTIPLE sex-appeal outfits her anime counterpart wears. Seriously, look up Serena's Florges cosplay. Hell, when she cosplayed as Ash in one episode, she wore Ash's clothes yet they mysteriously became more form-fitting on her, emphasizing her figure despite being designed for a male.
      While Elios got a standard shirt and shorts, his shorts still goes over the knee. Selene, meanwhile, got another pair of short shorts and her default top in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon was yet another sleeveless outfit and emphasized her figure a lot more.
      Chase gets shorts instead of jeans in his Red-inspired outfit, but Elaine still gets the same short-shorts all the other girls gets, but at least her shirt has sleeves, such as they are.
      And hell, a lot of the female clothes options in Gen 6 and 7 emphasize the female PC's figure, whereas the male clothing options are mostly color and/or texture swaps of his default outfit.

    It makes so much sense why the 3rd Pokemon movie was so sad now...

    So the Legend of Dratini episode was removed because Kaiser aimed a gun at Ash, but Squirtle Squad wasn’t even though shoppers aimed guns at Ash after Team Rocket robbed the store. I think the Legend of Dratini episode should have been aired anyways.

    What's Wrong With People Nowadays?
    It's Not The 90's Anymore???
    As An Adult, I'd Like To See The Original Version of the Story, Not This Censored Crap...
    I Watch Movies On TV Shows For Adult People Now, But I Also Watch Popular Animes And Cartoons...
    People Are Going To Grow Up!!!

    Another fact about Spell of the Unown is it was originally going to be called Lord of the Unknown Tower as is seen in early trailers.

    The funny thing is, in the swedish dub the line about if Caterpie had it cosy in it's pokeball. Also the gaint Tentacruel episode was broadcasted in Sweden in the right order. The swedish dub was more faithful to the original.

    I remember at some point Ash explains he caught all those Tauros when training to catch Pokémon at Professor Oak’s or something. Doesn’t make sense canonically, but at least they tried

    It’s my dad who first told me about Electric Soldier Porygon. He said “There was this Pokémon episode that caused a bunch of kids in Japan to have seizures”!
