I have to say that I started watching the Japanese dub around 2009-ish as I was done with high school and started college. I grew up with dial up so it wasn't until my on campus days that I had high speed wi-fi and could watch episodes online. From late DP to the present, I have preferred the Japanese dub for the emotional voice acting and stellar music! Sarah Natochenny is the de-facto voice of Ash, she knows how he works and performs ideally in every moment. My only problem is that nowadays sometimes her voice gets a little TOO high, like when calling out Dragonite’s Hurricane. XY and early Sun and Moon was her most consistent time as Ash.

I think one of the worst casualties of the dub differences was Serena’s final performance against Aria. In the English dub, the music was underwhelming and it made you somewhat understand how Serena lost despite her strong ending.
In the Japanese dub however, the music was in sync with the camera movements and Serena’s choreography, and really made you feel like this was Serena at her best.

the original JP version, (not to be called 'dub' cuz that's like saying Made in USA was imported), has very outdated voice acting in the older seasons. This changed around Gen 4 and reached its peak around Gen 5 season (Best Wishes), with XY and XY&Z season being objectively the best season, with best wishes being a close second in terms of overall quality and animation. You have Aoi Yuki voicing Iris in that season, and a few other famous Seiyuus. Aoi Yuki voices Maya fey in Ace Attorney anime, and usually other loli characters such as Tornado in One Punch Man, Tanya Degaurachauff in Saga of Tanya the Evil, and the recent anime based on Isekai type light novels "So I'm a Spider, So What?" and "I Killed Slimes for 300 Years, and now I'm Max Level". For the latter title, she becomes a witch after reincarnation, and compared to the recent Witch anime Traveling/Journeying Witch Elaina, this one is much more wholesome.

Here's a fun fact: During the dubbing process of one of 4Kid's other big name franchises, Yugioh, they originally released two different versions. One was the standard censored version they're well known for, but the other was their Uncut version, which they released on DVD. These episodes not only retained the original opening and ending, as well as had no censorship, but the translation stuck much closer to the original script, though the voices remained the same. According to the director of the dubs they had plans to take this idea of an Uncut version and spread it across all their popular franchises at the time, including Pokemon. However, because the lackluster sales of the Uncut DVDs the higher ups told them to stop and only focus on the censored dub. I actually have two of the three Uncut DVDs of Yugioh and they're pretty awesome. It's strange heading the same voice actors from the original dub curse from time to time and say stuff like "This is a game to the death!", but I feel it kind of shows they weren't this evil company they're said to be.

@A Stranger I didn't mind the hybrid names, mostly because I grew up with the original 4Kids dub and the manga (which confused the heck out of me when I first read it back in the 6th grade XD), and I feel that might have been due to this being their first time giving an accurate dub rather than their own translation. It may have been a bit weird for the voice actors having to record two separate sessions for both types of translations.

They messed up big time on the triumphant moment when Ash’s Lycanroc Countered Gladion’s Lycanroc’s Counter. The Japanese version plays a song that is 100% perfect for such a moment, and the English dubbers are like, “nah, let’s just play the song that plays when someone loses, that’ll fit!” No, it only works before Ash’s command. Having it continue to play during the uppercut makes no sense at all.

As someone who primarily experiences Pokémon through the games, I've always had trouble getting into the Japanese anime since in the subtitles, they just put romanized versions of the characters' and pokémon's Japanese names as opposed to their localized ones. It makes it really difficult to figure out which pokémon they're talking about at any given time. Like, if someone says "Meowstic" I immediately know that they're talking about the psychic type from generation 6. But if someone says "Nyaonix" I'm left scratching my head as I try to use the few random Japanese vocab words I know to try and puzzle out which pokémon is being talked about.

A couple things came to my attention, it might of been said. In the 4 Kids era, it was correct Tentacool and Tentacruel was banned after 9/11 but it did air prior to it. Tentacool and Tentacruel was the first Pokémon episode I ever watched and it aired on UPN several times in 1998 and 1999. I know 1999 it moved to Kids WB which is more known. A Tower of Terror (Ash gets Haunter) was temporarily banned due to the title. I remember those episodes didn’t air for a while due to 9/11. It’s been back since 2006.

the dub music of ash vs paul was the "ok " instrumental version (this music is the japanese openings for the thirdy season)
the music on the satoshi vs shinji (ash vs paul) in japan was type:wild (one of the ending themes for the thirdy season)
both versions beted on nostalgia, but we didnt had Ok as an opening here, it was just another song that plays during the episodes from johto region, so we didnt had the same emotional bound to it as we would have if it was one of our OP/ED.
most of the people who watch both versions may prefer the dub because they have an bound to this music and no bound to the japanese music, but those who watched in japanese have an better connection with the scene regardless of wich music is better because it was no ordinary song for then, it was an freaking ending.
so imho the japanese version is better anyway.

In the dub she said something along the lines of "You (Ash) are the type of person I want to be. When we meet again you'll like who I have become", while in the original Japanese she actually said "You (Ash) are my target. When we meet again I'd have become a much more attractive woman". The problem is not the dub, but THE ADAPTATION.
The Pokémon anime has always been changed in terms of dialogues and soundtracks, and while until DP the situation was still acceptable, for the last 4 Generations TPCi crossed the line in multiple occasions: censoring scenes that were made either for comedy or (in case of Ash's kidnapping from Team Flare and Kukui and Burnett drinking) just made sense in every way; to eliminate 90% of the OST in the episodes and insert small melodies in the moments of silence (I challenge you to say that the Alola League final has the same pathos in English); and translating some dialogues in a more mundane way - like Ash saying to Greninja "If only I was stronger" instead "If only I could endure the pain", or "It looks like Ash allowed the Gym Leader to get inside his head" instead of "It seems she has complete control over the battle".
At this point, to watch in Japanese has becamed the only way. It's such a shame that series like MHA, Overlord, JoJo and even One Piece are adapted wonderfully by Funimation and alikes, but the series belonging to the biggest franchise in the world it's still going throught an early 90s type of treatment.

Although I'm surprised you didn't touch on the "Americanization" that the 4kids dub was notorious of doing where they edited out anything Japanese that appeared on the show (writing, food, etc.) to make it more appealing to American audiences (for example, the infamous "jelly-filled donut" scene). That can probably be a video of its own, potentially.

One thing I'll comment about the English dub (at least the little bit I heard of it) is that the English scriptwriter changes it too easily. The problem is that they are thinking tactically on an episode-per-episode level and not suspecting that the Japanese original might have a strategy behind it that they might be ruining with the changes.
For example, the @4:10 segment, 4Kids decides to make the entire exchange not so much sassier, than nastier. You will never know in the original, Misty did not say that Caterpillar was disgusting, just begging Ash to return it to the ball. She's scared of it but she knows it's her subjective likes and dislikes rather than bugs being objectively disgusting. And rather than insulting Misty as disgusting, Ash merely expresses exasperation at the whims of girls. Even if I can agree 4Kids made it "more hilarious", it will be at the expense of their characterization, because it made Misty less self-aware and Ash just plain old meaner.
And I really "liked" how the translator failed to grasp the subtleties of XY's episode 7. In the English, when Fennekin taps Serena's leg, Serena reads it as Fennekin wanting to help Pikachu et al by attacking Team Rocket, and she just goes along with what Fennekin decided. In Japanese, Serena reads it as Fuoco prompting her to decide and she does, asking for Fuoco's assistance. There is a clear answer as to which one fits better with the themes of the Serena's story and Serena's characterization.

8:30 That episode debuted in 1998, and even then, I’m not even sure there’s any citations or articles saying the episode was banned in the first place.
For DP, Kayzie Rogers and Carter Cathcart (Wobbuffet and Gary’s voices)
stayed on the series and never left during the VO swtich, and the reason why some actors have reprised old roles is mainly due to their replacement actors leaving the series or the character having not appeared during the early transitional days.
And lastly, censorship mainly falls to network standards and practices.

  • @giboit.
    @giboit. Před 3 lety +24

I honestly prefer the sub version more for many of the reasons. I can respect the effort in the dub but the soundtrack, the intensity in the scenes by the trainers and the pokemon (specially during the battles), the fact that there´s way less censorship and the openings are still far better in the japanese version.

  • @Father_of_Death

The 4Kids English dub is not just nostalgia it had more heart to it.
When Pokémon USA took over the dub it was awkward at the start, but then the show devolved into something that feels more like a parody dub. The acting ranges from decent to mediocre at times, but what really holds it back is the adaptation. They only utilize one script writer and this person I will not name them has said they absolutely detest the Japanese script and feel like making Team Rocket sound like Dr. Seuss with rhyming and alliteration. The best Team Rocket lines were when Crispin Freeman, Kathy Borland and Mark Ryan were working on the script. Also, Pokémon USA now The Pokémon Company International refuses to release official subtitles for the Japanese version.

Legit, I almost cried when I heard her in the Journeys Alola episode, I missed her so much. I also do not get the hate on Serena’s voice, I love it as well and it never got annoying. While, we are at it. As much as I miss Dawn, I’m scared they will change her english voice actor. I love that voice more than anything, it SCREAMS Dawn.
