The craziest rumor back in the day was when some kid told me he found a Hoothoot with a different color than normal. I was like "Come on that's ridiculous. Who would fall for such a thing?".

Honestly the "press a certain button while catching a pokemon" is so engrained into me that I still do it even though I know its fake

I still hold down certain buttons when throwing out Pokeballs. It's silly, but I really believed that as a kid, and just find myself doing it out of habit these days.

I love how it's progressed from "the internet wasn't around so misinformation spread without anyone being able to check" to "the internet is widespread so people made a bunch of fake leaks". Never change, pokemon rumor-mill.
I mean, look at Smash Bros. It's basically the same, but even more prevalent. Look at most fighting games. It's basically the same. Look at pretty much any other game. It went from playground rumors to leaks for all of them.

The internet was around! It's just, most of the gaming sites were amateur fansites run by kids who would parrot any information people sent them. Thus the circulation of rumors about Mewthree, Luigi being unlockable in Mario 64, etc.

clayzulah Internet even around 2007 was pretty primitive compared to now. The bulk of information about things like video games existed in forums, there was no huge sites like reddit or twitter where primary sources would post things, pretty much everything was “he said she said”

Yeah these rumor videos they have been doing are the absolute laziest, worst and most low effort videos they’ve done thus far lol they don’t have to make sure that every fact they list is actually legit, and have to fact check it by looking up the facts to look at their accuracy, INSTEAD, they can just make up every single “rumor” they talk about, since they’re not true lol, and then every other “fact” they list (that they probably got from websites that list these types of things) don’t need any other explaining, nothing in these rumor videos are actually true so the rumor vids are literally all just blank bs vids that don’t contribute to anything aside from racking up views and ads lol ugh

I love how most of these are “You can get a Pokémon by doing this” or “You can do this to make the battle easier” and then there’s “Misty/Brock will kick your ass”

I've got to admit: I miss the days when none of this could be fact checked. It added a level of mystery and magic to the Pokémon games that we'll never experience again.
The internet existed when pokemon was released in the us . Gameshark codes could be found online. A class mate got me codes in 5 or 6th grade in the 1990s

@@stewie17 Not only was the internet not as common for most people back then, it was usually a single computer shared by the entire family AND whenever one had to use the phone, the internet would stop working... and many houses didn't even use the internet back then as well... plus, it was pretty slow and many of the sites just sucked...
I'll admit that the internet had a magic back then that it won't now... but that was just cause something like that was so new and cool..
It wasn't really that reliable back then, and most Pokemon fans weren't in the 5th or 6th grade back then, being much younger... I was in 1st or 2nd grade or something back then...
I remembered a rumor back in school during the Fire Red and Leaf Green era, that if you level up your Charizard up to a level 100, it would earn a scar on its right eye.

I mean… certain sounds trigger emotions... and the scale is weird... it makes people uneasy on average... it’s creepy is a good way to say that... it also just means “people tend to agree it’s creepy” or “it was intended to be creepy”

Having fighting, psychic, and dark type starters would make everyone's mind explode. I would love for Game freak to throw that monkey wrench in. Plus having the first gym be ice, and the last gym be an assorted type gym, plus having all the gym leaders have adapted abilities to counter your starter would be freaking awesome.

Rumors speculated about this uncle character but looking into the data of human bodies, the rumor has some truth to it, but needs confirmation.

I love how people were so sure a random truck was key to getting a Mew
that was shared on a lot of "para-official" pubblications. I remeber it on a magazine I had which was the most complete guide on G1 around here. everything else that was on it, from the episode list (and a pretty complete detail on the porygon episode) to each E4 pokemon's detail was as precise as datamine, but it had that rumor as well. is not hard to believe many other did share
I want a Pokemon mod with all of these rumors implemented. Some of them would be really hard to program though.
I think combatting the murder trials that result from all the kids committing suicide isn't worth the effort or lack of moral code.

When I talk about the phenomenon, I say "missing number". When I talk about the Glitch-mon, I say "Missingno", omitting the pronunciation of the first N and pronouncing the G instead.
I remember the Mewthree and Pikablu rumors all too well. Even though finding out video game rumors were fake in the pre-internet era was frustrating as a kid, the wonder and curiosity around them was actually fun :)

In my schoolyard, rumors that you could catch either Yoshi or "Pikablu" (Marill) were also tied to moving the truck near the SS Anne.
Honestly the unknown spelling Celebi in the party and using cut on the shrine would of been pretty cool.
Also catching all pokemon besides mew and getting a GS ball would of been dope I wish they really gave you more hidden features like that
I like how the idea of a Pokemon evolving when you turn the system upside down actually became real.

I remember my friend told me that you could get Deoxys on the moon in Ruby and Sapphire by beating the Elite Four 100 times, then catching Latios or Latias and bringing it to the Space Center.

I remember the Yoshi rumor. I wanted it to real so bad, especially since Link's Awakening on gameboy had Mario characters in it too. Seemed possible at the time lol.
Well Yoshi's first ever game was made by gamefreak so maybe one day well see yoshi getting catched in a pokeball
The original official guides for Blue and Red actually had tips about holding down buttons to increase the catch rate. It wasn't just a rumor, it was officially in print.
I won my school's pokemon tournament by scoring a critical hit on a guys Dragonite, with my Luigi's family reunion. I'll never forget that moment for as long as I live.
I remember my friend told me there was a place called larvitar tower in pokemon emerald. I spent years looking for it.

Yeah I remember most of those. Pikablu rumors started because the Japanese Marill card was out as a promo card before Gold & Silver came out. And I forgot about Sapasaur but I heard that one too.
growing up i didnt really fall for these rumors since i wasnt aware of most of them,but i do remember falling for one in x and y. they said that you could get genesect breaking the rocks in the cave where you get your first fossil,and i remember spending hours trying to get him. sigh,if only game freak created an actual event for mythical pokemon instead of just giving them away randomly

Well exposing yourself to a constant feeling of unease isn't great. Though just like any other horror, once it's off, you might have nightmares for a week if you are sensitive to it, but it fades.
Lavender town tune? In fact there is a note in change log, that it was altered due to "psychological issues". But it was due to high pith sound in Green version, what cause headaches. Despite whole "it being creepy", this story strain also from confusion with real event. Over hundred kids were hospitalized due to one of anime episodes causing epilepsy. It was "Virtual Soldier Porygon" incident. Also it was episode, what in fact contain explanation of PokeSystem work. What due to lack of proper explanation in the show, is still source of misconceptions regard subject (it is teleportation by the way).

I remember a lot of these rumors! I miss the days before the internet sometimes. I still press A when I catch Pokémon. The magikarp splash one, the pokeball catch one, and the lavender town creepy pasta, and catching all Pokémon for mew were popular in the 90s. I remember the rumors on a new hidden legendary because of the anime showing Ho-Oh when only RGBY existed.
Seeing how so many "Poké-gods" are from evolutions, I like the idea that the first starters' mega evolutions are a homage to that.
Ever since the internet era started these funny rumours have all but died. I miss when people used to come up with all these rumours and myths.
i beat the elite 4 in emerald in the hopes of a shiny Gen 1 starter... my friend had ashiny charmander and told me thats how he got it... found out about a year later that he used an action replay

It's cool how many of these Pokégods ended up sort of becoming reality later on. Instead of Doomsay, we have the Duskull line. In the case of evolving the finale stage starters, we have their mega evolutions now, substituting the mist stone for mega stones. Oh, and how turning your device upside down to evolve was actually introduced as the method for evolving Inkay.
I absolutely got mew in red version, I don't remember what the exact technique was but it was something involving catching an abra and teleporting. It took forever but it definitely resulted in getting mew.
I love all that mystery from the 90s. Looking at Ho-Oh on the first episode from the anime but not knowing what Pokemon it was, the truck at the SS Anne, the GS ball, the entire Gen 2 beta (which in the end was released). The low quality pictures helped a lot to create that atmosphere.

Yeah I remember that were a kid told me back in school about tapping the button will catch the Pokemon faster. It's fascinating that rumors spread just as good as the internet back then but also so much misinformation.
I always held down the A button harder and also heard a rumor to tap A as soon as the pokeball hits the pokemon head to increase the catch rate.
I used to slap my dick on the screen and that usually worked.

Honestly that sounds funny. Some of these rumors I'm kinda glad aren't true (beating the game 100 times is a horrible trigger for events), but that would be neat.

These days I think these rumours have been replaced with “game theories”. And before that they were replaced with creepypastas back when people thought creepypastas were real. Even after the internet, people will find ways to expand upon games with “what if” ideas and rumors. It’s almost comforting to know it never really dies.

Theories aren’t really as popular as they were before so I’d say theories aren’t the replacement. I’d say leaks are much bigger as they not only change the way a game may be played but bring excitement at the idea sort of like rumors.
Eghm... the difference is that theories are possible (until they are stupid like Ash comma). Rumors are sensationalist and commonly make no sense if you think about it.

When I was little around 5-6 or so I believed these rumors that went around my school and friends in Brooklyn:
-You could get Togepi in gen 1 by using fly to "Sky City"
-You could get Lugia, Togepi, or Snubull "I called him Bubble" by going to the St Anne after it left and you could choose q of 3 pokeballs by a gentleman in the ship
-You could use the St Anne to get Lugia from a pokeball taken back after the Orange Islands
-In Pokemon Yellow, you could get Misty and Brock to follow you
-You could use the Space Shuttle in Pewter City to access either Pokegods and Alien Pokemon or even Mewthree
-You could get Marill from the Orange Islands from the St Anne

The elite 4 one was told around my school, and I had to convince the whole school it's not true. They were told it unlocks Mew.
So for about 3 months, everyone was grinding the Elite 4. All the meanwhile I'm sitting with a Mew I got in a trade when I was on holiday.
They all believed I actually did it. And even though I kept telling them to not waste their time. They still blame me when they got to the 100th run and nothing happened.
That was the day I invented the facepalm
