Dana Point to Two Harbors, Solo Sail to Catalina Island

- As a beginner sailor, this is a very special moment. This video documents my first passage to Santa Catalina Island with our boat precisely one year from my first sailing lesson. I depart from our home port of Dana Point to make a 7.5-hour passage to pick up a mooring at Isthmus Cove, Two Harbors. Not only was this tough as a beginner, but doing it singlehanded in high winds made this incredibly challenging. This is just the start as many more explorations of the Channel Islands will come.

Good choice for a first boat. It looks like you have a solid anchor and generally good gear. My first boat had a similar boom vang and I found that by using snap shackles it would double as a preventer and could be quickly moved to any place I needed a 4:1 purchase.

We've been sailing and going to Catalina since our marriage in Avalon in 1975. I still screw-up sometimes picking up a mooring. Don't worry about it. As good as really far-off destinations can be, Catalina Island is still nearly as good as it gets. The wind you're suddenly feeling and which is blowing those kayakers out to sea, is the regular afternoon sea breeze funneling down through the Isthmus. Wait to you experience a Northeaster making big wind-waves in Two Harbors. Never belittle or underestimate cruising the local Channel Islands.
