  • The Santa Catalina Island Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus traskiae) is an endangered species considered the rarest tree in North America. There are only 6 to 8 individuals remaining in existence and greatly endangered from becoming extinct! The ability to produce true seeds has been lost due to (hybrid) genetic swamping, and cuttings are virtually impossible. We are trying to save the tree by storing and producing new clones via plant tissue culture, also known as micropropagation, to overcome challenges of plant propagation. Thank you to the Plant Conservation Team at the Catalina Island Conservancy for being proactive in this effort and collaborating with Tree of Life Native Plant Nursery to help save this iconic Catalina Island species.
