8 left? WHAT?! I found them plentiful at high altitude on The Great Divide - from Boulder to Buena Vista, Colorado! I've spread seeds, collected dead roots and branches for polishing for staff head pieces. They thrive on crumbling, rocky cliffs with extreme temperature shifts. *** I must guess that you mean that they are scarce in your region. FYI, I'm a naturalist with a 2-yr. degree in forestry & wild life conservation. * I'm open to questions and comments.

Hi @doctorstrangesage3104, you’re likely talking about Cercocarpus montanus, commonly known as the alder-leaf mountain-mahogany, alder-leaf cercocarpus, and true mountain-mahogany. Also another mountain mahogany, the one I’m am describing and showing in this video is a completely different species, Cercocarpus traskiae, or Santa Catalina Island mountain-mahogany. Also, an update, there are only six remaining plants of this extremely rare species. C. traskiae is endemic to Catalina Island and is only found in one gully on the backside of this island. Thanks for your comment, I hope this adds some clarity.

Great video, thanks for posting. As a 30 yr guide in the Sonoran desert, I found this very interesting and helpful. I know many of these plants, (maybe a slight sub-species on the mainland), form my guiding, including a few on the OC & San Diego coast. Don't feel bad about going down on your bike, this hard-packed dirt, with loose sand and rock is challenging. I did the Catalina marathon 12 yrs in a row, (back in the 90's), and loved being on the island. Hopefully, you'll find a good "best friend" for your journeys, Scott
