    Just a tip for anyone watching. I install commercial storefront doors for a living. The most important part of installing any door is making sure everything is perfectly level. Otherwise you will have issues with the door swinging out and hitting the ground, or there will be uneven gaps between the door and frame, or worst case it won't work at all.
    What you want to do, is level up the ENTIRE frame with wood shims COMPLETELY prior to anchoring or nailing anything. Check for level in all 3 directions. (Across the header, down each vertical jamb where the door stops are, and down each vertical jamb on either the inside or outside.) Just because the door "lines up" with the wall framework and looks nice, doesn't mean it's level or will work AT ALL. Get the frame perfectly level no matter what, worry about looks after you're done.
    Then you can either shove some plastic shims and anchor, or just anchor and break off the wood shims. The best and most proper is to use plastic shims as they don't rot and let the door drop or shift at all later down the road.
    The way he did it in this video worked fine, but it very easily could've led to him getting the door out of square and making it a parallelogram due to the fact that he nailed one side, then shimmed the other and nailed it after the fact.

      Next try nailing 2 pieces of strapping a foot from the bottom and a foot from the top. You can lift the door by yourself And holds the door in place.

    Always level your sill first. I like to wrap the rough opening higher on the jack studs. Also always put about 3 beads of silicone down first before putting door in. Seals threshold to sill so water and draft can't find way into house. Seen that many times. I've got the Stabila Jammer Set levels for doing doors; 6'6" + 32" levels. That way when you're leveling up your hinge side you can make sure it's straight and you don't shim a bow into the hinges and cause hinge binding. Strike side I adjust to the door making sure the reveal stays consistent.

    A big help to reduce weathering and greatly reduce heat loss in those brutally cold winters you have, would be to add a storm door to the outside of the regular door. I honestly can't believe you've been in that house for five or six years without one. No wonder the wooden door is so weathered.

    Nicely done! One tip for others planning to do this (as someone who has installed doors for a living for 10+ years), it's a good idea not to wear a tool belt while working on it as it increases the chance of scratching the slab while carrying, and making adjustments after the door is hung.

    • @MrBrownie1998
      @MrBrownie1998 Před 7 lety +5

      just a question out of curiosity, im a carpenter who works in a company with a special in doors/windows in denmark.
      do you normally seal a door/ window with somekind of silicone or acryllic mass or is that not so popular in US?

    • @EM-fi2qg
      @EM-fi2qg Před 7 lety +2

      Mikkel Bruun Usually we load up caulking under the threshold to keep air and moisture from getting to your flooring and then run a bead around the jamb behind the door casing.

    • @alexbanman1
      @alexbanman1 Před 7 lety +2

      As someone who has installed doors for a living for 10+years. If your not wearing a tool belt. your not making money. you are half as efficient without a tool belt. just learn where your tools hang in relation to your body. I have never scratched a door from a tool belt, or tools that hang off of it.

    • @MrBrownie1998
      @MrBrownie1998 Před 7 lety +1

      in denmark, we do the same under the threshold, but we also insulate with rockwool and then we seal the door completely with either silicone or acryllic mass. its funny how different something like installing a door can be across nations

    • @dcl97
      @dcl97 Před 7 lety +1

      There is no real standard so you will see a lot of solutions ( or lack thereof). I will typically use a closed cell (not "great stuff" open cell) minimally expanding foam with liquid flashing on the exterior. Copper sill pan, and a generous amount a lexel between both the sill pan and the wood, and the threshold and the sill pan. Cheaper installs will get self sealing membrane instead of cooper.

    Cody, here in New york (upstate not NYC) we get horrible winters and here's some tips I hope are helpful to you! I've always called the tape grace tape and I also take a heavy bead of good exterior silicone under the threshold and set the door in it! I also take the weatherstripping and pull it back and screw under that to hide it. Also before I trim it i take some of that grace tape and put it on the sides and top face on the outside to help seal the opening to keep and air from blowing into the house. Not to tell you how to do it!

    @WomackKP Před 7 lety +1

    A few things to add... I use the black plug to keep the door square when pinning it in place. Just discard the jamb side of the plug be fore you slide the door in the opening.
    90% of the time this will make the door square without even using a level on the hinge side.
    When removing the short screw from the hinge, choose the screws closer to the weatherstrip in the center of the jamb. The screws on the edge, don't work as well.
    Finally, you can also screw the striker side of the door, I flip the weather strip back with my finger and run a screw underneath it so you still get a good looking finish, for the top and bottom.
    For the middle of the striker side use the striker mortise to hide the screw under the striker plate, just be sure to avoid the spot where the striker screws go.

    Cody one thing you may want to consider, the local crooks here have been using a small bottle jack with an extension and they are going up to homes and using the bottle jack to jack open the door at the knob deadbolt location and with a small hydraulic jack and those typical finger joint door frames the crooks are prying open the mandoors by jacking the frame open and just pushing the doors in, free entry no damage. To try and stop this you can get the shims as close to the deadbolt as possible and as stiff as you can make it at the deadbolt location. I knew of this when I was building my place so in the adjacent studwalls I also added a cross brace at the deadbolt location and it stiffened the door frame substantially, door install looks good it would look better with a screen door and keep the weather away from the inner door seals, provide more light inside when open and allow the option for screened air flow. Ha, ha personally I like the looks of the other wood door, good job.

Everyone installs door differently, and if it's not the same way as someone else apparently it's wrong? Good work.
