Things I was unclear on have been made crystal clear. You have saved me so much money. Thank you, I truly appreciate this video.

Thanks Paul! We had a big box store door installed 20+ years ago and it was never done right. We live in Texas and the clay soil plays havoc on foundations. We had that fixed about 5 years ago and I’ve been nursing this door ever since. Time for a new prehung front door for me this Spring! I built a few kitchens, but very little framing carpentry. I feel like I can now tackle this job right.

Nice video. I use electricians tape over the ends of caulk tubes. I put two pieces at 90 degrees to each other. I have had caulk keep for 2 years and still be good. A few years ago Mike Holmes hosted a show of handyman competition. He had guys hand double doors using used different sized doors in jams that were out of square and out of plumb. I think that would be a great video because some of us live in old homes that have settled and shifted through the years. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!!!!

Over the years I’ve helped people doing but I’ve never felt like tackling them on my own but the last five years I’ve been doing them. In this video I wish I would’ve seen my very first time I tackled the door because I think it would’ve took out all the guesswork and all the problems that I had to figure out on my own. Thank you for this video!
My existing door doesn't have interior trim nor do I have drywall so that simplifies things a bit. There was wood paneling but it broke and is all crumbled away. I have old ugly wood on the outside. My exterior trim is much wider though. I will probably have to sand it, repaint it, and put it back up. Might have to rip it down if my new door comes with exterior brickmold.
I'm going to have to put in a proper header on my door-- it has a flat 2x4 for a load-bearing wall. Fun times. It's also crooked and is 1" lower on one side than the other. Bonus points, there's electrical wire running through the cripples.
One trick I've found with removing doors is that you can pop the hinge pins up and out and then slide the door with off with hinges still on both the jamb and the door. Makes it easier to take the jamb out. I took hinge pins out to paint my door while it was on a table. I also needed to install a pet door.
I wish my floor was level. It's actually rotted and the sill is rotted too. It will be sooo much fun fixing that up. LOL.
I like how you did the flashing with the upper corners first.
When we helped my friend put his front door in we didn't plumb up the hinge side first. But we got the frame plumb on each side-- but floor isn't level-- so the door ended up sagging and having huge reveal on the top and hitting the threshold at the bottom. We thought the top was level from all our checking. Not sure what went wrong-- but it's a 100 yr old house. In retrospect, I wish we'd put the knob on to make sure it would catch properly before finalizing the shimming. Also would have used nails with smaller heads on the outside trim. I suppose we can try to square it up better now, but part of the threshold was broken off.
No concrete slab at my house. All wood & up on pillars. Makes patching a bit easier.
Man, I wish I'd known the weather stripping came out. I was taping it off to avoid painting it when I was painting the frame. I could have just pulled it out of the way and put it back in!
Back before I knew more about DIY I used regular Great Stuff around my door & it warped the frame so the door doesn't stay closed properly anymore. I have to brace things against it. While door got destroyed anyway after a few hurricanes though.
Do you have a link to the DAP flashing tape? Having something that peels only one one part first would greatly help me since I am a total monkey and get things stuck to themselves and to me.
