- When it comes to getting creative with flash, the price of the light isn’t always a reflection of what it can achieve. In this video photographer, Gavin Hoey takes on a low-cost lighting challenge by shooting high-key portraits in a small home studio.
Using just a white wall, a cheap net curtain, and a single Speedlight, Gavin shows you the best position for one flash, high key lighting and then applies that in two different ways. For the first style, Gavin simply covers the model with the net curtain. Next Gavin creates a tunnel of netting and photographs down the center.
After the shoot, Gavin takes you into Photoshop Camera RAW / Lightroom and passes on a simple tip to remove saturation from your model's skin.

Gavin has so much good energy!😁
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your ideas and knowledge.
Thank you!
Very nice !!! Dreamy images !!!
Thank you again for this tutorial. This is such a great idea and so easy at the same time. I love the low cost videos. We don't all have the money to purchase expensive lighting gear. Sophie is a beautiful and fantastic model by the way.
Yeah, Gavin, Sam and the fabulous Sophie - a super video !
Thanks Alan. Being able to work with Sophie the model and Sophie the make-up artist was a blast!
Thanks for more of your always-excellent and enthusiastic work, Gavin. Sophie's makeup and modeling certainly added to the quality of this shoot. Nice!
Thanks Mike. I always "test" the ideas before bringing in a model. Sophie took it to another level!
@@GavinHoey There's something hugely charming to me about those shots. Love 'em! :)
Fantastic. Your videos are always informative
That’s was excellent. So creative. Great results.
Cool. I will try to repeat this on my photo. Thanks!
Wow... Results after removing softbox are amazing....! Learn so much... Keep shooting 👍
Thanks. The softboxes control and direct light which is normally exactly what I want but occasionally just a low ceiling is all you need 😉
Gavin, your photos are amazing!!
Thanks Alex
Great results as usual and good idea ... will try to find some curtains 😊
Really I like your works and your ideas ...sir.Gavin
You are awesome! I always learn something new and inspirational watching your videos!
These are amazing! Thank you!!!
Thanks Patty 👍
Really cool idea Gavin, I love the shots through the netting, simple but very creative.
Thanks Eric 👍

Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial
Great ideas, thanks Gavin!
Thanks Ken
Amazing!
amazing work!
Hi Gavin, great video and some of the best high key images I have seen in a while. It is amazing what you can do with just one flash and a few props and grip equipement. Thanks Sophie, Gavin and Sam.
Thanks Alan 👍
As always very smart video
Thnx
You are a great master !
Awesome video. So very creative with minimal equipment.
Excellent Gavin, well explained and a great outcome for both you and the model.
Thanks Stephen 👍
Mate, this was great. The images were stunning - great stuff as always 😊👍
Thanks Paul 👍
great video, love seeing Sophie in action again too !
Thanks Kim 👍
Another inspiring video chocked full of fun ideas. Cheers.
Thanks Roger 👍
I have seen your low key and high key shooting methods. The same model, but with makeup, is completely different. Recently I also want to try low key shooting. After watching your video, I learned a lot. It is simple. It’s easy. I hope I can take pictures like yours!
Really liked the problem solving. I thought the images with the speedlight pointed at the ceiling really represented high key. Beautiful images. Thanks, Gavin.
You just make everything so simple and easy to understand like you always do. But that end image wow sir 😉
I don't know why the silk like photography never crossed my mind! Gotta right that one down! Dope VIDEO 😜
Amazing Sophie!
Amazing...
Great!
Nice one Gav!
Thanks Seth 👍
This ranks as one of my favorites..it kid of reminds me of Joel grimes high key images. Really stunning.
Thanks David 👍
Great fun and informative as always. Appreciate the LR tips. Gavin always pops in on the entrance to the video like an excited kid ready to play. And then makes some playful and interesting images. I think that's the spirit we need to remember to keep when we photograph. I like the create an actual scene approach. I have three Godox (Flashpoint) speed lights as my primary lighting along with the holders and modifiers. Great lights and a lot for the money. I was running Sony a6000s. When I picked up my Canon 6D & 7D I was able to get the Flashpoint X2T-C used in excellent condition form Adorama. Just like that TTL capable if I desired on the Canon as had been on the Sony. I think I need to get the gear back out and start doing some thematic images.
Gavin, that`s a very creativ and inspiring shooting with awesome results, thanks for sharing 😊👍 .... and thanks also to Sophie who did an excellent job, great make-up and always a great matching facial expression, well done !! 😊👍🏆
Great to watch you work through the lighting setups, thank you. Also great to hear you praise your Speedlight since that is all I have. Very inventive your little trick at the end, flash the Speedlight on the curtains to magically produce "Subscribe." 😄👍
Awesome, thank you for creating yet again an entertaining and didactic tutorial
You're welcome Don.
@@GavinHoey I do look fwd to the next one. Stay safe
Another great one from Gavin!
If I'm not mistaken that Flashpoint gear is made by Godox, who also make the same gear under the name Strobe Pro and Godox. I have two of their speed lights and I love them.
I love this, got to have a go at it soon. ;-)
Thanks Raymond, give it a go!
The old curtains never looked better!😁
Hey Gavin, love your portrait shoots, they're very inspiring and informative. Im curious what your endgame is. Do you do shots like these for clients? Do you sell them as stock images? Keep up these great examples!
Cool. Very nice outcome. Props to you and Sophie. I don't know but she kinda reminds me of Christina Aguilera in the photos.
Great video! Love the results from lighting from above. What device are you tethered to?
Thank you soooooo much Mr. Gavin. I love photography and I'm learning a lot from you.
What table are you using there on the stand and what software you use in it to show the photos?
I'm using my Lenovo Miix tablet Win10 PC. It's discontinued (I think) so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro. The software is the free Olympus Capture (imports Images) and Olympus Workspace (displays full screen).
Super 👍
Очень круто! Спасибо.
You're welcome 👍
GAVIN!
Hello!
Thx for the wonderful video😍 which lens do you use?
Hi Gavin great contents and thank you for sharing. I would like to know how are the the ring to that monitor besides you.
Master Jedi Gavin " bounce the light you must"
Another awesome presentation Gavin!!!! Can I ask how you decide on how much head room you leave (if any) in your portrait photography.
Good question. There's no set rule, it's more a case of what feels right. If you need a starting point, aim to keep your subjects eyes (or head on a wide shot) on the upper third line.
Love the effects. Noticed you had your camera linked direct to a monitor, is there a video on how this is done? Many thanks.
Hi Andrew. That's not a monitor, it's my Lenovo Mixx tablet PC. I think it's discontinued so a Microsoft Surface Pro would be the modern equivalant.
Great video Gavin
Thanks Kirsty. It's yet another idea for photographers who only own one speedlight... just saying 😉
@@GavinHoey that was a great idea
first thumb up from me. yeah.
Better then being the first thumbs down. Thanks Dirk 👍
Love your work, Gavin. Love this session. Did you try increasing the saturation of her red lips?
That's very artistic Gavin I really enjoy Sophie's artistic style in her makeup..congratulations to her 👏🏿... My biggest question to is why did you use f 5.6?
Huge credit goes to Sophie's MUA skills! Why f/5.6? To kill the ambient light, give me the DOF I was after, it felt right on the day... actually probably a combination of all those 😉
Damn bro I could use this for bridal portraits
Hi Gavin - great video as always. Always an inspiration. I see you were tethered to a tablet of some sort. Which one do you use.
That was great. Now I want to tear down my curtains. I am sure my wife wont mind.
I love your useful videos. If I buy from ADORAMA and I live in the UK, will I be charged extra tax etc. I would love the Godox ad200. thanks
Awesome video, thank you. Did you have any problem focusing on her eyes with the white fabric in front of her face ?
Good question Jose. The Olympus E-M1 Mark iii (like most modern cameras) has amazing eye detect AF, so no problems what so ever!
Very nice learning video, it's great and i will try it at my home studio.
Me and my friends like your videos very much.
Quesiton, what kind of display are you using for the thetering image.
Great ideas .
Could you tell some about monitor/tablet (?) for tethering you use ?
Thanks
Hi Tomasz. I'm using TetherTools cables (link in the description) connected to my Lenovo Miix tablet PC. That runs Olympus Capture and Olympus Workspace software to grab and then display the images.
@@GavinHoey thank you very much :)
Are you using a ipad to shoot to and which progam are you using to shoot theter
Hi Frank. I'm using my Lenovo Miix tablet PC. I think it's now discontinued so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro
Hi Gavin, another great video. Thanks. What would be great, and what none of the Adorama presenters seem to do, is to work with "regular" people. For example, bald men with shiny scalps, older light complexioned people with gray or white hair, people with long noses or long faces, heavy set people, etc. In other words, the types of faces that we viewers are likely to be photographing. Any chance of doing a series of videos on how to light and photograph "regular" people?
May i know what tablet is that you used to tether photo directly from camera ?
hi,,, can u tell me what kind of Tablet you r using ,, that one you connect your camera with ...
That's my Lenovo Miix tablet PC. I think it's now discontinued so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro
Hi Gavin, great video as always :-) can you tell me what your using as your monitor please?
Hi Ian. That's my Lenovo Miix tablet PC. I think it's now discontinued so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro
@@GavinHoey thanks 🙂 looks like a great option instead of a laptop
So "ethereal". Right off the bat my mind is placing anyone of those shots as an album cover (if albums were still generously sized vinyl LPs). Great segment Gavin.
What was the tether set up?
Hi Marcus. I'm using TetherTools cables (link in the description) connected to my Lenovo Miix tablet PC. That runs Olympus Capture and Olympus Workspace software to grab and then display the images.
Love his videos. He more about getting the shot and not hung up on gear
What is the monitor you are tethered to? Is than an iPad and if so what app are you using?
It's a Microsoft Surface tablet of some description.
If you have an ipad, have a look at the Cascable app.
I'm using my Lenovo Miix tablet Win10 PC. I think it's now discontinued so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro
Gavin please tell me what is the name of that material you used for backdrop. Thank you thank you!!!
Hi Khalid. I think it was called Stretchy Jersey Fabric. It's a bit like the fabric T-Shirts are made from but a lot more stretchy... a white painted wall would have been a lot easier!
Anyone reading this can you please tell me what material is that white backdrop. I need the name of the materiel for backdrop that is stretchy!! Thank you
Can I ask which screen you use in your studio to view your shots ?
Hi Mike. I'm using my Lenovo Miix tablet Win10 PC. It's discontinued (I think) so the nearest equivalent would probably be a Microsoft Surface Pro.
@@GavinHoey thanks Gavin
Sir Please make a video on low key...
