- Having more than one Speedlight opens up a world of lighting opportunities but it can also be the fastest way to get yourself lost in lighting. Trying to figure out which flashlights what and how much power each Speedlight needs, gets more complicated as the number of flashes increases.
In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey has a simple, reliable, and repeatable answer to this problem… Go slow! Starting with basics such as exposure triangle and eliminating the room lights, Gavin takes you through a three light set up in his small home studio to create a cinematic, nighttime portrait complete with smoke effects and Snow (thanks to his free Photoshop Snow Fluffy Action)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Jak na to + styl
Sam!! Why haven't you been modeling before?! Gavin...you need to utilize her talents more often. She was amazing!
Well done, you two.
Agree!
Thanks Randy :)
Its lovely to see Sam after all this time working behind the scenes . great Video and a great woman warrior to boot...
Thank you! :)
Sam killed it. Glad she is willing to assist. She did great. So did you Gavin. Thanks
i don't understand the thumbs down...Gavin perfectly explain how "Not to mess up" when using 3 lights. A more advance lighting tutorial tho. that is one heck of a spear Sam is holding! Thank you Gavin.
Love the fact that CZcams dismisses the thumb down button now when it come to the numbers. Gavin and the whole Adorama team always give such great advice. Pye feels like the Bob Ross of photography and Gavin is like his more excitable cousin with loads of enthusiasm. The whole channel is fantastic and I can only assume any thumbs down are put by those really not trying to learn anything new. I'm 56 and have dabbled with photography for decades with different formats. I always learn something new or remember something I learned and forgot from these great videos.
The hidden thumbs downs must be really annoying to the trolls who get pleasure out of being negative. Brilliant idea
Include Sam more often - what a gem! Gavin, you are by far my favourite photographer,... I wish you posted 8 Days A Week - Great shoot!
Sam’s a hit for sure...oh and you did ok too Gavin.
Thanks David :)
Literally the fastest change of outfits I've ever seen lol. Didn't realize Sam was such a quick change artist also. Fun video.
A big help. Thank you, Gavin!
Great job Sam! oh and you too Gavin. Thanks for sharing not only the cool shoot idea, but the traps in working with multiple lights.
Brilliant thanks for posting!
No idea how I missed this one but I found it today. Sam looks great in this! Good one Gavin!
Always wonderful videos, thank you Gavin and Sam
Sam's a natural!
Finally, the wonderful Sam as your model. My untold wishes were heard. I don‘t see here as a warrior at all, but it is a start, isn‘t it? 👍😀 Very good lesson Gavin, thanks. 👍👍👍
One of the best lighting explanation videos I've seen. Great end result, and the chap is also a very good teacher.
Love it! Go Sam! Thanks Gavin for this very inspirational video!
Wow, amazing, Gavin! And we have been so happy to see Sam as your model! You two are awesome! Lots of greetings from Germany.
The results are. Sublime!!!

Most of the time I'm proud of my props and sfx make-up, but the spear gives me a slap in the face. Good job both of you.
Awesome. The best photographer, I've ever seen.

love your work !! your tutorials are amazing please move to Scotland Gavin x
Very well done. Learned a lot
Your tutes are always dope af
Yep, you need a lot of patience to be a good photographer! Im brushing up with my lights and getting Dagney my mannequin out of the closet to pose and endure! Hi from Jan in NYC! You still inspire me so much. Great job Sam!
The best tutorials !!!
Loved it
Great job Gavin and Sam! Really well thought out process in setting up and metering your lights! Nice tricks on WB and flash filters. Not complete without smoke and wind! Bonus now Sam has some updated photos for her resume! lol Cheers.
As usual, Gavin is gem
Great one there Gavin
So Sam's multi-talented, she did a great job modeling for you. Great video too.
Great video!!!!
Thank You!
I love these.
That’s awesome. Patient 😬
Gavin’s videos are the best, and after almost every one I want to try what he’s doing.
Gavin, thank you for this great tutorial! Just yesterday I was practicing in my home studio with 3 speedlights. It would’ve gone faster if I knew this stuff then!🤣🤣🤣 I took notes!💡Always great content!
Good stuff as usual Gavin 😁
Thanks for the help! Awesome shoot!
Another great video. Thanks Gavin. I never knew Sam was such a great model! The two of you make a perfect team.
And a professional quick change artist at that.
One word only: WOOOOWWW!!!
Fantastic result Gavin and Sam was a superb model too! 👍
Thank you! :)
The photo world “ Micro 4/3’s can’t be used for professional photography “.... Gavin says... “Hold my beer”....Ridiculously good...Almost unbelievable...As always Ty Sir....👍😎
The part of "don't do this" is the way we do it every time.... 😜🤣😂🤣😂👍👍👍🤗🇨🇭 but not anymore after watching this lesson with Master Hoey...
You're not alone. Glad this helped 👍
Hi Gavin its a great reminder - im a speedlite fan and would love to update to something with modelling lights but for my budget for now will scrape by with what i have - i am dong exactly what you recommended - can be a bit slow for some models who are not used to waiting but ive learnt to get them onto the wifi with their fone so can check messages etc while i chat and find out about them get a rapport going and tinker with settings -
That first scenario was toe-curlingly familiar. Going around and around and eventually thinking “sod it”. Thanks Gavin - and Sam, of course.
Yep, I found that surprisingly easy to "re-create" 😲
Fantastic video
Amazing
Excellent, Gavin, and excellent Sam for the costume, makeup, and modeling. Always fun to watch you work, and your results are the proof that you did it right. Thank you!
Thanks Mike! :)
Now that was special! Sam must have a twin - in and out in a sec. 😂
Great Video, Thanks Sam and Gavin! 🇨🇦
Thanks Alan 👍
Great video as always Gavin. Thanks for the ideas and workflow tips
You're welcome Dan 👍
Thank you!! it really is very inspiring! you make it seem so simple, your tutorials are so pedagogical! a true teacher. Kudos to Sam for being such a thorough, assistant model, producer . Congratulations!
Pedagogical. My word of the day!
Love Sams energi and fierceness. Amazing lady!
Thank you! Grrrrrrr ;)
I`m new to speed lights and that was my mistake - trying to setup everything in one go. Gavin`s tutorial (as all the others) is amazing for beginners like myself. Keep on going Gav!!
We've all been there Marius. Go slow to get the shot quicker 👍
Your videos are extremely helpful. And I wonder how do you do that video effect where she's both leaving the shot and coming into the shot :)
Great video Gav as always
This one hits home for me because I tend to try and go at a fast pace to keep the model interested and still try and get the lighting correct. Def pays to take the time to set the lights the way you want it.
Maybe I should get a Polly model aswell to help me get the lights set before the model arrives 🤔
Great tutorial, always a pleasure watching your videos. And Sam makes a super warrior.
Thank you for all your videos, I have learned so much.
Thanks Scott! :)
Consistently outstanding 👏
Excellent tutorial, great results. And Sam's makeup and props are amazing! I'd love to see more content on those aspects if possible!
Thanks Alun :)
Genius
A very timely video. I’ve got 2 speedlights and have been getting into a right tangle when trying to do it all at once. So, will be taking the advice on board about one step at a time. Thanks to you both for a great tutorial.
You're welcome Gary 👍
Wow! That was the most important video on speedlites I've ever seen! All the details are just silly if you don't have this workflow correct.
Sam, you are Fierce! Loved this.the outcome is fantastic.
Grrrrrrrr! Thank you :)
Loved the breakdown Gavin. Amazing work as always and Sam looked frighteningly great 👍😁😊
Thanks Paul! :)
Whoaaa, Sam looks soo good 😍😍
Thank you Monika!! :)
Yes, the amazing Spear prop makes a return, not to mention the incredible Sam ! And Smoke !
Perfect combo, right Alan?! ;)
Indeed! Sam loves to get value for money from our custom made props Alan 😉
Gavin, do you have a photoshop tutorial? Some of that processes you go through kind of blow past me and I'm not all that good with photoshop. I've purchased books they they become outdated after a couple of iterations of updates. As always, great tutorial, fun, quick, easy to follow along and explained very well.
All the best,
Todd.
Great video, I love your stuff. Sam was a trooper, being your model in these tough times. Even when she's not your model, you should give more emphasis to her. She's been the rock behind your videos for a long time. I've bought lighting and a smoke machine because of your videos. Keep it going. (How about a motorcycle photo?)
Wow! Don't mess with Sam!
excelente professor, vc lembra quanto de zomm estavam os flashes de tras da modelo?
Final file😳😳🔥🔥
best model ever
if one gives a thumb down it would be good if they could say why i am given you both another thumbs up
Thx, Gavin. Great as usual. I could be wrong but if the snow action was placed into a group. Then add layer mask to the group. You could remove the snow effect from her in one go. Have fun!
You're not wrong Edwin and it may not matter much but grouping the layers would loose the slightly random nature of masking each layer.
