Shooting With Mono In Mind | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- Black and white portraits with bold shapes and tones ranging from the brightest whites to deep blacks can be incredibly powerful. By removing the color in the image, the contrast becomes far more important. But there’s a lot more to making a quality monochrome portrait than adjusting the image in Photoshop. If you plan ahead, you can work with basic but graphically bold backgrounds and maximize the contrast in your image with some carefully worked lighting.
That’s exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey takes you through in this video tutorial. He starts with some simple camera set-up tips to help you pre-visualize your mono photos long before you press the shutter. Then he moves on using a simple solid black background with a separation light to stop his model and background from blending in.
Next Gavin switches to a grey seamless paper background. Here he shows you how to work with the paper background to get bold black and white portraits using just a single flash at first and then by adding a second light for just the background.
Finally, Gavin moves on to the plain white wall for his studio. Making a white wall photograph as pure, bright white takes a little bit of careful metering but as Gavin demonstrates, once you know the secret your white backgrounds will always be perfectly white.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Jak na to + styl
Years go by and I never stop being surprised at the ease that Gavin has to teach so much, thank you.
Your insight into how to meter the bounced light off of the background is a “before and after” moment for me. Thanks for sharing the “how” and the “why” for so many years.
Thanks William. Once you realise that one tip, pure white backgrounds with strong subject contrast become much, MUCH easier!
It would have been good to still meter the background at the wall until it read f/4 to see the difference in how the photo would look.
If your background is truly white, not slightly white or very light beige as some materials can be, and smooth, then you can meter the background at the wall until it's the same reading as at the subject and get a white background. But it needs to be evenly lit.
You can see in the way Gavin did it here by metering at the subject that there was some slight loss in contrast from the light reflecting off the wall and wrapping around her face.
But because it was just one light and the distance was short, there would have been some fall off to the edges to a light gray on the background. So if you can add a second light and light the background evenly so that all areas in the frame meter at the same as at the subject, you can get a white background
Has to be the best teacher around!!! Thank you M. Hoey.
" Are you ready". Yes Gavin , I'm ready. Thanks.
Brilliant as always. Thank you Gavin and Charlotte.
Always awesome to see you Gavin. Thank you for your teachings. Always good to go back and refresh on knowledge. 👍
Brilliant, I love black & white images
I enjoyed the black background...
Perfect teacher....as always...thanks from Greece
Your trainer skills are the most ! Thanks !
Nice work Gavin 👌🏾and thank you 🙏🏾 😎
Always excited to see a new video from you. Amazing photos and always well explained!
Very impressive Gavin . Thank you very much
Un plaisir que vous regarder, une maitrise parfaite de la lumière, un superbe travail qui inspire. Félicitations Gavin
Give this man a raise and his own youtube channel!
Excellent presentation, Gavin. As usual!
A few very good Inspiration. Thanks Gavin!
Another great masterclass Gavin. I prefer grey backgrounds mainly because I can turn them black or white with more or less light. I find grey backgrounds work better with coloured gels to.😊
Black and white has a special place in photography. Thanks for showing what’s possible with black and white and flash. Print quality photos for sure. Thanks Gavin.
Thanks David. I'm not a big printer but a couple of the grey background shots I can envisage as large prints.
Great as usual - thanks Gavin.
Great tutorial. Thanks, Gavin.
Some of the best and informative videos on CZcams, Thankx
Great video as always, breaking the septs down to make it easy to follow. Your videos are a joy to watch and so informative..
Great video Gavin effortless on your behalf ! thank you.
Again a very interesting and inspiring video Gavin, thanks.
Thanks for this and more great info
Thanks, Gavin! Always appreciate how simple you make it look, but the results are in another league! My favorite was the model roaring!
Thanks David. Got to give credit to Sam for suggesting the roar!
Fabulous ideas never seen the metering off the back of head before .. converted
Gavin jak zwykle fajny poradnik :-)
Great Gavin!
Gavin Hoey is the best 🙌🏼
Gavin just keeps going with exceptional content
Love the shots.
Love it. I call it learning to see in black and white.
Back in my film days that's exactly what we called it and it took years to learn. Today we just switch the camera's LCD to mono 😉
Great video Mr. Gavin Hoey, loved it! Love all three backgrounds each one changed the over all mood, so in the end it should be whichever goes better with whatever is that one is creating. Thank you ADORAMA for having great Photographers like Gavin Hoey in your channel to demonstrate what can be done with all the great gear you guys offer in your site and store!
Thanks for the kind words Alexander. Adorama TV is a family that I'm lucky to be a part of.
Great stuff as usual!
Very good teacher in photography
The metering off the back of her head for pure white...never seen that before...great trick!
Hi Wes. Once you know that little gem, white backgrounds become a whole lot easier!
Great video, Gavin! 👏👏😇
I love it. I am moving from street photography to flash photography... should be fun. I have done some before but want to get real into it.
Great information Gavin!
Another great video from Gavin! Very informative.
As lovely as ever 👍🏽
Great video! Thank you!
WOW, Charlotte is amazing! As always, Gavin does a first rate job.
Charlotte is always amazing 😊
Pure simple and bold, awesome vids as usual Gav, thanks so much for hte continued inspiration!
Thanks Matt 👍
Great show
Thank you!
Thanks Gavin, Charlotte and Sam 👍😀🇨🇦
Thanks Alan. Charlotte did an excellent job as MUA and model and credit for the final photo is 100% Sam!
Great video and as already pointed out the metering from models head was an epiphany.
Also why do folk still give these top tutorials the thumbs down??
Thanks for the vido, Gavin! Charlotte is amazing as always!
Can't wait to see what you've got for us for Haloween
Thanks Mati. Plans for a Halloween shoot are already underway 👍
Informative, as always.
Great video
I love Gavin Hoey
Thanks Gavin, insightful and enjoyable as always.
Thanks for watching (and commenting) Graham.
Kicking ass and taking names! Great stuff!
Thanks Alun 🦶
Another outstanding video!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks for the kind words Patty 👍
Nicely done sir. Charlotte is multi-talented. Thanks for sharing your talent and experience.
What makes a model or MUA multi talented is when they can do their job well AND interpret my often unexplainable ideas into the real world.
Love the channel! I am interested in knowing what that bar/clip thingy mounted to the light stand that easily held the collapsible backdrop... Thanks!
What a fantastic video, I liked how you got the pure white background. Keep up the good work. 😃
Thanks Stuart 👍
My only comment has to be , That was awesome ! Thank's Gavin. And your accomplice was perfect.
It's always a team effort and this was an excellent team!
Amazing shot! Most beautiful use of our cohesive bandage we've ever seen.
Your tape is genuinely useful stuff and I've still got plenty of the black tape and a whole roll of white tape left! Lot's more photographic uses to come I think 😉
Is that what's wrapped around her neck?
Thank you very much! I got a question! In all the photos you have taken with the black background on the left of the subject(or bh when she was "screaming"), wasn't the black making the shadow more black on side of the more pronounced? From what I know the black background can be used to increase the shadows! Or was the power of the flash with the grid on, too low to do that?
Always good!
Thanks Robbie, glad you enjoyed it.
Superb as always! You've also managed to give me some tips on a still life film noir inspired project i'm currently working on. Thanks again!!
I'm glad to have been of some help Lisa 👍
K.I.S.S. as usual, awesome as usual. and image at @8:49
Hi David. I'm glad you singled out that image. With limited time and LOTS of photos I took it out and put it in a few times. I love it too but thought I'd get push back about not seeing the eyes but then I remembered... so what, I love it 😉
@@GavinHoey I knkow the feeling. "it's all about the catchlights" but sometimes it's the emotion, the feeling. Anyway, great ideas, and implementation as usual (y)
Thanks again, Gavin. I'd also really love to see what you would do with a graphic background - checkerboards, or black and white diagonals, or something.
Me too, sounds like a fun idea Richard.
Charlotte was great. B&W is not a choice I make often, but your results were excellent. I hope I can remember to try it soon.
Thanks Edward. Charlottes interpretation of my sketchy make-up idea made the shoot for me 🎨
Hey Gavin! Haven't watched your videos for a while! You look amazing! 💪
Thanks Valdis 👍
Inspirational as usual. Just need a willing victim/model and an MUA :-)
Trust me, your are my only Guru. ♥
Great work and ideas Gaving!
Thanks 👍
all that and you look great
Supper Sir.
Great video and it really doesn't matter what background you as long as it gives you the effect that you want that really matters
Well said Kirsty 👍
@@GavinHoey thank you Gavin
Fab stuff and I was interested to note that I liked the look of the modelling light at the 3 minute mark - and this is what gets me doing more tests with LED lights of all types - none of my speedlites have modelling lights but im finding myself using LEDs more than before partly as I use for video too
Hi John. Modelling lights are super handy not just for seeing the spread of light but also for better focusing (more light = faster focusing). With speedlights I've jerry rigged super bright bike lights on top to get a modelling light. However no modelling light comes close to a dedicated LED lamp and as video is you're thing, that's the way to go for sure!
SUPER. SUPER , THE BEST VIDEOS
நன்றாக இருக்கிறது வாழ்த்துக்கள் R.MANOHAR- INDIA,* CHENNAI
Thanks for another wonderful video. It looks like you’ve got a lot more space in the new home studio.
It's a bit of an illusion. The floor space is actually smaller (more width, a lot less length). But I now have an even hight ceiling and separate storage for all my photo stuff. So I can show and use more of the space 😁
@@GavinHoey Then your new space looks deceptively large. Again, your video's are alway first-rate, informative and appreciated. The the mind-blowing thing is, they're always free. Anyone who has ever shot, edited and posted videos knows how much work the process is. And trying to keep a fresh stream of content, that might even be more difficult!
Thanks Gavin and Charlotte. A good demo video. Your tips, especially the one about the light meter basics, should help many new to all of this. Yes, always measure the light at the model or subject in setups like this, even when it's reflected light from the backdrop.
Although my studio walls and ceiling are white, I still prefer a white muslin backdrop texture over my white walls, but I also have black and gray muslin backdrops on my ceiling mounted backdrop system, so it is easy for me to switch. Your new studio is quite an improvement over your previous one (perhaps a short video tour in the future?). I wish I had a 10' studio ceiling. Mine is only 8' and is quite limiting for some shots, but it is what I have.
Thanks for the comment Charley. The roof height was the main selling point of the new studio although the beams at 8' do get in the way at bit.
@@GavinHoey Tie beams can be raised higher. My studio is under an almost flat roof, so major work to raise my ceiling.
What is that set up with the magnetic? thing at the top? The one that you put the black background on? It looks magnetic.
very interesting
Always enjoy your lessons. How do I tether my OM 5 to my iPad Pro with my tether tools cable so I don’t have to use my PC? Thanks again.
Or should I ask what program as OM Share is via WiFi.
Interesting tripod for backgrounds with ease clips, what name of this model?
Great video, your videos are always so informative and easy to follow. I had a question on how you tether to your iPad. Can you please provide a little more information on how you make that work?
Hi Vincent. I'm using Tether Tools cables to connect my Olympus camera to a Lenovo Windows 10 tablet PC. Olympus Capture and Workspace software are doing the tethering and display of the image.
@@GavinHoey Thank you so much for your reply. I will see if I can setup my Surface to do the same. I appreciate your response. Looking forward to more of your amazing videos.
Another excellent video one question what is it you are tethering to? I noticed it on a stand.
I'm tethering to an old but reliable Lenovo Miix tablet PC. As it runs Windows 10 it's super easy to tether too.
Great vid as always Gavin. As you said its subjective. for me I think that the rim light on the roar! pic should of been darker, or maybe off. What do you think?
I think you saw what I thought (for this shoot). Tomorrow I might think and shoot a little differently and that's what makes photography so amazing 😉
Maann, back in the day b+x Kodak film was so much more expensive💰💰💰 then but took fabulous shots.
I was an XP2 guy. Not cheap but I could process it in my colour C-41 chemicals 👴
Any idea how to hook up the flashes to a Leica M10 Monochron camera…for true digital B&W shots?
Just use the appropriate trigger.
Which light meter are you using? Just curious because most that I'm familiar with use Pocketwizard transmitters to trigger flashes, but you're using a Godox/Flashpoint trigger on your camera. Does that mean that Flashpoint/Godox strobes can be natively triggered by a PocketWizard transmitter? 🤔
Hi Stephen. It's easy to miss, so here's the link from the video description you're after...
czcams.com/users/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqblQwYzd2ckdhZTFlajhON1J3ODVBLUFXMW1BZ3xBQ3Jtc0ttdFFhUmtJOW1vY0JDd1hoRnFSbm90YlB3Z28xQm0yTWhnOFJ1UjFoMmVoQmExUDNzUlhmUkcxWDRnUERVMkRNdWtkX0hCNmlpYXpkNHFtQ0VzTlk5cDZHQlRRQlpfMXBUUGZURnV1ZzVFSTExRF9nbw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2Fsksk401305.html
My old but reliable Sekonic meter can't fire Flashpoint (Godox) lights but the test button on the transmitter can 😉
Good video and inspiring as always. Did you leave the black screen on the side on purpose to use it as negative reflector, or it’s just coincidence?
That's a REALLY good question and one that I go into in depth on my next Adorama TV video.
hi Gavin, would you please let me know how to connect your camera to the ipad? by HDMI or Tethering cable? i need to connect my sony camera to my ipd as displaying what i am shooting. please advise.
I'm using Tether Tools USB cables to connect my Olympus camera to a Lenovo Windows 10 tablet PC. Olympus Capture and Workspace software are doing the tethering and display of the image.
@@GavinHoey oh, i have sony and ipad pro with capture one 21 and i can be tethering only wirelessly by wifi and you know the wire is always better than wireless connection!
WoW!! It was lovely. Thank you sir for the wonderful explanation. Can you please explain more about that grey backdrop like it's material and size & also what would be the cost of it?
It's a 1.8 meter wide roll of seamless grey paper. There are dozens to choose from at Adorama www.adorama.com/l/Photography/Lighting-and-Studio/Backgrounds-and-Supports/Seamless-Paper-Backgrounds?sel=Color_Thunder-Gray_Smoke-Gray_Stone-Gray_Storm-Gray_TV-Gray_Focus-Gray_Fashion-Gray_Studio-Gray_Slate-Gray_Gray
@@GavinHoey Thank you so much
Can you talk about how your shooting in to the tablet? I see you're tethered to the tablet but are the photos being saved there or to the camera card or both? Also what programs are you using to tether to the tablet?
Hi Michael. Part of the reason I tether is to have an instant back-up, so my images are on both my camera AND my Lenovo detachable laptop (tablet PC). Being a Windows 10 PC I'm running Olympus Capture and Olympus Workspace to tether and display the images in full screen. One of the many unsung benefits of Olympus is how quick, simple and stable it is to tether!
Love your information Gavin! Could we get more info on the tablet tethering?
Hi Dale. That's my old but reliable Lenovo Miix tablet PC. It's a Windows 10 PC (with a detachable keyboard) so I'm running normal Windows based tethering software.
@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin, it's really all I need. I currently use my desktop in my studio for my headshots, but is not ideal with the proximity. This helps, and I'll research more. Cheers my friend.
If I go black and white, I go for the black background, or really hard sunlight. I love my deep, brooding shadows.
That's good to know Darci.
Is this a magnetic Backdrop holder? Could you please provide us with a link to Adorama?
Found them: it is from Manfrotto (Lastolite)
👍
I love photos to watch, but If i take IT in my own, i am bored quickly
😬😬😬
