  • In Australia, Sunshine Coast, 13 year old Daniel Morecambe lived happily with his family. In 2003 he went to get a bus, and was never seen again. For almost decade searches would be undertaken, investigations done to find the boy. But nothing. Not until, a key suspect happened to make friends on a flight...

The reason they get let out is because if you know you have nothing to lose by leaving a witness you are much more likely to commit murder.
They should get one chance at rehabilitation, no public record of what you did (though you can't get a job anywhere that you'll come into contact with children) and they should be given a GPS tracking implant that has a rechargeable battery (wireless charging), the implant would have a permanent battery backup and a small vibration motor to warn the person of low battery. If the rechargable battery runs out for more than an hour and they don't answer phone calls police would be dispatched to arrest them for tampering with a monitoring device. The implant could also contain a stun gun module or a concentrated vial of a somewhat safe anesthetic such as ketamine or midazolam so they can be immobilised remotely if they try to run. The implant could link up to a mobile phone for further monitoring and data. The implant could be used for geofencing too so they can't go near a schools or other areas with lots of children.
If they reoffend then they get a full life sentence.
      One chance and lifetime monitoring.
Also laws in some places need changed so that if there's an age gap of a maximum of 3 years and the people are in a relationship they aren't charged with any crime. I've heard of a few cases in the US where a 18 year old was dating a 17 year old and ended up a registered sex offender because the girl's parents didn't like him. Canada already has this 'Romeo and Juliet' law IIRC.

its crazy how sexual assult isnt treated as serious by the law... I think maybe its just not considered that serious of a crime compared to other crimes, since the damage it does to the victim is generally psychological, not physical (or financial) so more people kinda dismiss the action because they cant see its consequences as directly as something like a robbery or knife attack or something. but even someone who doesn't think its that serious a crime shouldn't be so easy on a sex offender because someone who commits that kind of crime is likely to do even worse things, and giving them longer sentanes will prevent their future crimes. its the same thing as animal cruelty laws, its often not considered that serious of an offence since these are animals and not humans and many countries don't even have animal cruelty laws, but a person who is cruel to animals is pretty likely to be cruel to people too

We don't have the manpower nor money to pay those men, nor resources, to send them out to every missing child case. Do you know how many kids are reported missing every day? And that an overwhelming majority of them come home safe, usually just cuz they wanted to stay at their friends an extra couple hours or something. How do we figure out which cases to dedicate our police to? Probably by making parents wait a bit, go looking in their own, and if the kid still isn't found after a certain amount of time, then we can dedicate some of the few the police and precious resources to finding that child. Use just a bit of critical thinking, don't get caught up in your feelings, try to figure out why we don't go searching for every single kid as soon as they are reported missing. And don't just assume it's cuz cops are lazy, that's just an excuse to stop thinking.

(I'm going to edit this one time, if you think it's a bad thing that more attention is paid to the offenders during trial and sentencing then I can't help you. Obviously something is broken with you. If more attention has been paid to the man in the story he would have likely gotten much more than a year and the kid would have probably still be alive. Saying that people should have more attention paid to them didn't automatically mean they get lighter sentences. Some may warrant more rehabilitative options but some folks may be found to be more dangerous than the current system would find them to be. So again, if you get mad that my comment is that MORE scrutiny should be put on people during a fair trial then I think you're the weird one)
It's not right to say that everyone cannot be rehabilitated, the studies that say this are flawed. However, this isn't my country but I can say in my country the system needs to be reevaluated. Obviously something happened here where this person was not correctly evaluated for his danger to society. The reason this happens in the US is because they over prosecute so actual dangerous criminals are not properly evaluated because they don't have time. (and not just these crimes, all crimes). For example in my state two 17 year olds who sent nude photos to each other were convicted of sex offences. Under your statement they would be thrown in prison forever and castrated. But when the government is focused on these things how do they have time to look at who is actually dangerous and who is not? It's not defending people like this man, it's saying that if they sound use sense then they would be able to be more attentive to what they are doing with dangerous offenders

@@rdred8693 It's even worse - at the time of Daniel Morcombe's kidnap and murder, Brett Cowan walking free after being TWICE convicted & imprisoned for raping little boys in separate crimes six years apart.
The first victim was a seven year old boy in 1987, the second the six year old you mentioned, who was so seriously injured during the sexual assault he nearly died. Those are attacks he was caught for - who knows how many other sexual assaults on children he got away with?
TJ Cole's post here doesn't surprise me - I think it's highly unlikely Daniel Morcombe is the only child Cowan ever murdered. He shows every indication of being a potential serial killer.
As a sex killer Cowan was highly motivated to re-offend, and he progressed to murder to prevent victims identifying him and getting him jailed again, and possibly as an additional sadistic sexual thrill. It is shocking he was ever regarded by the authorities as a suitable candidate to be freed from prison after such horrific, sexually-motivated attacks on children. After his release from jail in 1997 for the second child rape, he was ordered to attend a sex offenders treatment program. What a sick joke!
Sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated - they are hard wired to enjoy violent, non consensual sexual activity, so will always be a threat to the public. Sex crimes frequently escalate in violence, and become murder cases. It's high time societies recognised the seriousness of sex offending - even so-called 'minor' sex crimes like voyeurism and stalking, can be the precursor for sexually motivated murders. If I were the Morcombes I'd want to sue the individuals whose disastrous decisions allowed such a dangerous man free to murder their beloved son.

It's nice to see that Australia as well as us, in the USA, despise child predators and talk a good game about how bad they are but STILL let them roam among us. Give 'em a year or two and let them free. Then we act all shocked when they do more horrible things.
If everyone cared as much about getting them off the street as much as they cared about Johnny Depp or Harry and Meghan, maybe things would be better.

This case was super close to home for me, I remember watching it on the news as a kid when I was in the Sunshine Coast, I used to be driven past where he was taken many times, I always had such grief for his family, I couldn't imagine the pain they feel. I know the police questioned tens of thousands of people, including my uncle because he drove a similar car (the police raided the house a few times and brought him in for interrogation) obviously my uncle didn't do it, he had to sell the car because it was making everyone sus..
Also- when I was about 15, I was at highschool (a place a few hours away) Daniel's patents visited our school and it was right around the 8 year mark, they spoke about Daniel and spoke about their app and how to stay safe etc, we got to speak to them on a more personal level too, this was a few days before the news broke that they had confirmed it was Daniel's remains (on the news) because they spoke about how they had a suspect in custody and they found remains, including a shoe, which needed to be identified, but they also mentioned how heart breaking it was that is all they had left of their son and that most of his remains would never be found.. they looked so broken :( I met them both, Daniel's mother is incredible, I do believe they divorced after that, I just hope they find peace.
The justice system failed Daniel and many other kids and families. He shouldn't have been let out after the first time, unless they actually kept an eye on him and rehabilitated him. Those children didn't deserve to suffer.
Also, the story with the 6 year old boy was so awful, he beat the child an inch from death, squeezed his throat so hard that the blood vessels in his eyes burst, he trapped him in the boot and put bricks on the back, he left him for dead. But he escaped and went to get help and when they found him, they thought he had a serious car accident, he's a grown man now and still completely destroyed by it all.

That's really nice that he took it so seriously, sometimes you get lucky and get a cop with a heart but too many times you end up with someone that think they know everything because of their position and knows more about your child than you do and a lot of times they don't even have children and can't possibly put themselves in your shoes, and drop the ball really bad. I know 2 people unfortunately that this happened to and it makes you want physically choke some sense into the person. I've seen a lot of cases on TV, real stories from people that this has happened too also and it just so frustrating that runaway is their first thought a lot of times regardless of the relationship between the parents and child. Most parents know if their kid ran away or not and even if they did anything could happen so it shouldn't be taken anyless seriously than if someone had seen it happen .

Why are police so slow to respond in cases like this one? It doesn't matter that it's a male child and a teenager, what matters is that he's missing and his parents know he didn't run away. It's infuriating when police do this and treat it so casually.

THIS is a perfect example of why the death penalty should be in place for child killers, paedophiles etc. If you harm a child you pay with your life. You have to be so bloody damaged to hurt, harm or kill a child. There is no purpose for the offender to go on living. Evil walks this earth and when we find that evil it's just best to do away with it.

    • @morgan79737

Exactly right I see no other use for the death penalty except for child preds. People kill each other that’s normal lock them up and throw away the key, but a child pred is not normal and deserves to be eradicated from this earth and sent to the inferno below, a cell is too good for them.

    • @audreymuzingo933
      @audreymuzingo933 Před 2 lety +1

Child killers, okay. But "mere" pedophiles, no. Here's the problem when any crime less than murder becomes a capital offense. Picture a man who has raped your child. Now that he has already committed a crime that would get him the death penalty, why shouldn't he go ahead and murder your child, to eliminate him/her as a witness? People commonly respond to this assertion that "The death penalty isn't a real deterrent anyway." --Maybe not always or even usually, but SOMETIMES it must be. Then some say, "lots of these sickos kill the victim anyway, to avoid being identified and getting even a little prison time, for rape." Well, maybe lots of them do, but not all of them. So now back to your child, considering the death penalty MIGHT make the difference in him/her being allowed to live, would you take that chance away?

I watched another video on this case a while back, and if I recall correctly, his second victim was basically left for dead. I remember wondering why his sentence was ONLY 7 years, and of that he served less than 5. Surely sentences for kidnapping, rape, and bodily injury served consecutively should have been the minimum punishment.
