  • The finale video to me repairing and restoring the damaged from bumper to my C5 Corvette, PAINT! Over the past few months I've been repairing various parts of the bumper that sustained damage during the accident the car was in. This was one of the most damaged body panels on the car. I first began by repairing various cracks, gouges, holes, etc. in the bumper with a special 3M body repair epoxy. Now it's time to paint!! I am challenging myself to only paint this with rattle cans! I wanted to see what kind of paint job I could get without investing in all of the compressor and sprayer equipment!
Hint Hint: I am super happy with the results of this paint job given my prior experience (practically none) and the equipment/setup I was using!

Looks great, man!! Now I need to watch much more before painting a whole car. No idea if I will go rattle can or not. Steel car not fiberglass and it will be my first restoration.

Yea I was pleasantly surprised as well given it was all rattle cans. The 2K clear coat makes a big difference. Video of the reassembly of the car is coming soon.

How many cans of base and clear coat to paint that bumper?
    Thanks

So I had some issues with the base coat cans that caused paint to leak from under the nozzles, which I talked about in the video, so that caused more paint to be needed than probably what was required. Remembering back, I used about 6 cans of base and 3 cans of clear.
If I didn’t have the issue with the cans I bet I could’ve gotten away with 4-5 cans of base and 3 cans of clear.

For a 22 year old car and color matched paint based only on the OEM paint code, it's pretty dang close. It's not a perfect match, the spray paint is a slight bit darker (maybe because the car's paint has faded a little over the years), but it's only really obvious in direct sunlight. The only place it's more obvious is where the front bumper meets with the passenger side front fender that's the original paint. In the coming videos you'll see more when I get the bumper installed again.
I used 2-3 cans of primer, 5 cans of base coat, and 2 cans of clear coat for the bumper, but part of that was due to the fact that the base coat cans kept leaking from under the nozzle, so I wasn't getting the full spray volume out of those cans.
Give it a shot! Honestly the prep was the hardest part, and make sure to use a 2K clear coat, that's what gives you the deep glossiness and durability.
