Been watching your fire videos for years since retiring as a full time news photographer. I know good work when I see it, and yours is the best. Mine was still pictures but the talent, the instinct, and the technical skillset are universal among photo people. You show us how firefighters are fighting the fire, not just pictures of the flames. And I will be damned if I can figure how you hold the camera so steady!

John, I believe the term that you are looking for regarding the firefighters standing around is commonly known as Manpower Pooling or staging areas. You are correct that they rotate firefighters in and out when working fire suppression operations. Great coverage on this fire.

Any chance you can elaborate the sound heard at around 9:20. Sounds a bit like a car alarm or a really loud chirping chime (not the PASS devices motion alert). I’ve heard it several times in your videos and it sounds like it’s from everywhere. I assume it’s an evac alarm possibly incorporated into the PASS devices? Transmitted by Field Comm if I had to guess? But not sure.
IT IS A ALARM FOR WHEN A MEMBER MIGHT TRANSMIT A "MAYDAY".....IT HAPPENS MORE OFTEN THAN IT SHOULD AND MOST OF THE TIME IT IS INADVERTANT AND THE MEMBERS ARE OK.....THANKS SO MUCH.....

In watching other departments that you have shown. I have noticed that the FDNY very rarely uses their deck guns as compared to other agencies. Why is that? Secondly what is the main function of the satellite units at a fire scene?

the "cyborg" dispatchers are usually only used on the initial call when your at the firehouse... once your out and working you get the human being

Yaesu FT-4xr is what I use for handheld. It can be had from Ham Radio Outlet for about $75 on sale right now. It covers VHF/UHF and is perfectly legal to buy and own. You just can't transmit on the amateur radio bands without a license. Obviously don't transmit on police or fire frequencies either.

Nebraska Sandhills refers to a one or two story building,commercial on the first floor, cheaply built by the owner of the land, so he could rent it, to pay the taxes on the land, while he waits to decide what to do with the land....hence the term "Taxpayer"....most were built well over 50,60,70 years ago.They are found throughout NYC, but Queens and the Bronx are loaded with them.

Looking at this building on Google Earth, it looks like a big garage or warehouse area on the second floor. Is the first floor like that too? Whats also interesting are the business on the first floor along Tremont street including a restaurant, home decor and sportswear store. A lot of peoples businesses ruined.
