Best Montepulciano producer I have ever tasted is Emidio Pepe. Visited the vineyard in 1992. Drove up to the vineyard and found Mr. Pepe walking his dog and sheepishly said to him I had traveled all the why from Canada to taste his wines. He invited me to the house, introduced me to his entire family, then proceeded to instruct his wife to prepare some food while we went to the cellar. He proudly recounted his families' century long winemaking history. After taking over the production in 1964, he was the first member of his family to bottle the wine at the winery, before that, it had always been sold in bulk. The cellar contained bottles dating back to 1964. After regaling me with stories of winemaking for about 1 hour he retrieved a bottle of 1982 Montepulciano d' Abruzzo and we sat down with his family for food and drink. . The anticipation on his face while he waited for my reaction was genuine. I thought to myself, what does it matter what this 23 year old Canadian Italian thinks of his wine. The wine blew me away, and his face lit up with pride. What made it so memorable, was how this humble farmer(his words not mine) had welcomed a total stranger into his home and made me feel like the most important guest he had ever received. Best wine experience of my life, 30 years on.

Thanks very much for sharing that amazing experience! It is visits like that one that turn people into ardent, life-long fans! Yes, certainly an outstanding producer and one whose wines I hope to try more frequently in the years to come! Cheers!

My dear wine lover friend, I m drinking Montepulciano d Abruzzo since many years now and I have to say that it is one of the best Italian wine in absolute (with Barolo, Amarone, Chianti, Brunello, Primitivo, etc....)
The quality for the price is astonishing and you get a good bottle from 10 to 20....25 bucks.....
If you take a Tuscan wine at 10 bucks you will have nothing in the bottle.
I would like to name also the wines of the Marche : Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno.... also very good values for the price.
Life is too short to drink bad wine.
    Salute!

Thank you for this lovely video. While everyone else seems to mention Emidio Pepe all the time, you mentioned producers I didn’t know. Also thank you for leaving the wines in the description box.
Can I just clarify (and this is not just you, as it seems common in the English speaking countries to use intergengibly the word area/region) that Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is not a region (the region is Abruzzo) but is just an area where the wine is produced. I have people asking me about Chianti region, Barolo region etc. These are not regions they are areas within a region (Tuscany, Piemonte etc.).

I recently tried a Montepulciano from Molise which is an area a little less known compared to Abruzzo.
It was an excellent wine with dark spicey fruit with just a touch acidity and a long finish. Some great value in that part of Italy.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of my go-to midweek wines. I tend to stick with The Wines Society's picks, as they are excellent value, but I will keep my eye open for these high end wines.
