- On May 12, 1989, a runaway, Southern Pacific, train derailed and took out 7 homes on Duffy Street in San Bernardino, California. This video gives a brief explanation of how this disaster unfolded.

The elevation of that embankment is insane. At 110mph, I cannot imagine what it would’ve looked like seeing that train leave the rails.
Thank you, Forrest. My father was a brakeman for Southern Pacific for about 35 years and this was very interesting to me. He died in 2008 and I'm sure he knew about this.
My dad was an engineer for Southern Pacific for 25 years before the merger with UP. Wonder if our dads worked together.

I remember watching another video on this and a lady that lived nearby said that it was a sunny day when she was washing her dishes and all of a sudden there was, what looked to be, rain hitting her window. She wondered how it could be raining on a clear, sunny day and then she started to smell it, it was actually the gasoline coming down on her house. I can’t remember the story exactly, but it was very similar.

I remember when this happened. It was like a horror story. Just when you thought the worst was over, boom the next event happened. It was very traumatic for the residents already reeling from the train wreck.

Especially for those across the road who saw the neighbours' houses being totaled and thought "jeez, we were lucky"
as a person who loves trains, i’ve probably heard about this disaster at least 100 times. however, i’ve never analyzed it by looking on google maps before. thank you forrest, for providing this new perspective of the train wreck for us. if anyone wanted to know the consist, it goes as follows: SD40T-2 8278 leading, SD45R 7551 (in Kodachrome colors) trailing second, SD45R 7549 third, SD45T-2 9340 fourth and as for the helpers we have SD40T-2 8317 (snoot nose) and SD45R 7443. All SP units built in the 60s/70s.
I Remember when those SD45T-2s and SD45Rs were on the UP.. I'm wanting to say UP rebuilt them but Either way those Damn things were wore out

I was a 16 year old Junior at Rialto's Eisenhower High School when this two part disaster occurred. The L.A. local TV news outlets and various print newspaper coverage was scary for us kids to comprehend. In the immediate aftermath of the gasoline explosion and subsequent fire, the Rialto Unified School District put all of the schools in an Emergency/Disaster protocol. I remember seeing some of the black smoke from the home side grandstands of our football stadium portion of the campus.
My English Teacher gave us students an assignment to write to letters to the Editor of the San Bernardino Sun Newspaper a week or two after the Duffy Street Disasters. The newspaper published both of my letters. In one of the letters, I proposed the idea of a Jacob Engine Brake system should be implemented. One person told the paper that my idea was ridiculous. The gentleman was correct because the diesel engines in the locomotive cars are only used to generate the electricity that actually powers all systems in the trains. On top of that, I was unaware of the fact that there were two locomotives at the rear of the train until I watched this video. In 1989, the media outlets said the train was going too fast when it started its descent down the Cajon Pass and the human operators burned out the brakes.
I moved to Phelan ((west side of Victorville and Hesperia) in 2011. Helper locomotive cars are a regular site on trains going to and from the direction of the Cajon Pass nowadays. Sometimes, I have seen locomotive cars in the middle of the trains.
This has been covered over and over. This clown just making money off old content.
It's sad to see these totally preventable things happen. As is usual with a disaster, it was a combination of things and if any one thing didn't happen there wouldn't have been a disaster. Just a whole slew of incompetence all across the board.

My dad moved to this area of Muscoy a couple years after rhis incident and the locals and my friends would tell me all about this. I walked those tracks with my friends often. That train runs right behind my dad's house and I was always afraid it would happen again. What a very interesting video sir. Thanks.

As if the train cars barreling right through the subdivision at 100 mph wasn't enough, the horrific inferno that ensued a few weeks later seemed to be hell bent on causing as much destruction as possible.

In the late 70's the Teton Dam in Idaho catastrophically failed. That would be an interesting one.
I remember it well , drove by shortly after the crash and recall train cars jumbled in a huge white hill of trona . Later when the pipeline exploded i could the flames from my back porch 6 miles away. Worked with a fellow who lost everything in that fire . What a tragedy.
I was working near there that Day and I saw it after it happened. A horrible sight and will never forget. A memorial for the crew was constructed at the Tehachappi loop.

Another great posting Forrest.. I remember hearing about the explosion when it happened. Having spent year in the Petrochemical Process Industry in operations we used to get regular bulletins regarding incidents. There are photos available of the actual explosion crater and the pipeline break and the “Tag” damage from the loader. Originally the pipe line was buried too 5 feet down but thermal expansion and contraction had brought it to I believe 2 feet below service and very few pipeline markers that there was a Pipeline below.
Nice video. I was not aware of this disaster. I watch railcams and film trains, and have come to realize the power of these machines. If they cannot stop or slow down it's a disaster waiting to happen. Awesome as always Forrest!
In our school bus safety classes the way it’s explained to me is a train hitting a car or truck on the railroad tracks is to use your car as an example. Your car running over a soda can is what it’s like for a train to hit your vehicle. You can think about running the crossing gates but don’t do it.

I was 17 at the time and living in San Bernardino but northeast of this area. I remember hearing a small bit about it and seeing coverage on the news but not much else. Crazy how there are elevated train tracks near the bottom of a hill and it curves right near a buried high pressure gas line and residential houses were permitted and built there. What could go wrong?? Well, now we know. Great video Forrest!

The fact is that whole area of houses needs to be cleared of that area. I am glad you answered the question of how that area is zoned because that question was in my mind when you mentioned those homes that were destroyed. Can you tell me what year the railroad was built and what year did they build those homes in that area. I was just wondering what type of deal the developers or builders had with the San Bernandino Zoning Dept to build those homes in such a dangerous area and did they do an environmental study of the effects Pretty incredible that a gas line would run parallel to the track near a residential area. I wonder what elected official got rich off of that deal. Was there any compensation to the people that survived this catastrophe? . Most interesting case but I see a situation where somebody's palm was greased within the local govt
I remember watching this on either the Discovery Channel or the Learning Channel.
To answer your question about whether or not the people got compensation, I remember something about a lawyer who ripped them off with a class action lawsuit, and some people got next to nothing while he got rich.
It's very easy to judge it now, looking back 30 years. But at the time, it would have been very easy to overlook that, and honestly it still is. Homes go up next to railroads all the time. Pipelines run under neighborhoods, all the time. In heavily populated areas, most people don't want to leave empty spaces like that over the risk of something that COULD happen. I guarantee next to nobody loses sleep over worry of a gas line rupture or a train derailment. This exact scenario that happened here could never have been predicted, and even disasters today of similar natures of extremely unlikely, so people happily take the risk, which is honestly very low, though very tragic when something does happen.

Chris Shaw was an automotive customer of mine a few years after the accident. He told me that he was reasonably compensated but will NEVER forget that day.

I work on the old SP lines around Houston. Two explosions that happened (before my time) were the Englewood Hump yard explosion and the Mopac Mykawa road explosion. The Mopac explosion was shown to us in New hire class in 2003 to show why us doing our jobs is critical not just to us but to the surrounding communities and to demonstrate what a bleve is.
