Tremendous effort after being down a man. Could of easily had three in the second half. The silver lining is that we have the opportunity to qualify in front of the home crowd on Sunday.

As a tico I have to say this match was a nail biter. The Canadians NEVER stopped pushing, they were tireless, gracious in all their moves.
As a Canadian our response was great but you guys also deserved the result. Like in Italy-North Macedonia though, the team that is able to score wins. That’s football for you.
Respect to the Tico crowd & yea for our team I hope we learn from our mistakes just like your national team has done & now have gotten that win.

Canada was screwed by the referee and the players who faked injuries. In hockey, it's a penalty . This is one of the reasons why the soccer will be a marginal sport in the United States and Canada.

- MAK should’ve gotten a red for the first challenge & got away with it with a yellow. MAK fell for the flop in the second one & he handled that poorly, got a second yellow, suspended now, hope he learns from that.
Now actual reasons we lost?
- Costa Rica’s atmosphere was the first time Canada felt actual proper “pressure” thrown against us & we will not survive the World Cup if we do not know how to play under such atmospheres
- - we never felt that against the US, Mexico, El Salvador, but we felt that pressure when a whole nation sees a path to the World Cup & have the whole backing of their team. That’s Canada @ home, that’s Costa Rica right now, that’s maybe Panama on the final matchday
- Atiba @ CB was a very poor tactical move by John Herdman, where Anthony Contreras was giving Atiba hell though his own pressuring. First time in awhile Herdman gets slack for a tactical move & sure it’s due to our defensive situation, but he should’ve tried 2 left-footed centre backs instead of Atiba at the middle
- unlike the first 10 minutes where every pass was misplaced, we responded in game REALLY well in the second half, but our finishing was just not there. Costa Rica got their goal just before the half, that made Canada chase a formidable Costa Rica defence for the rest of the match, & we just could not be clinical.
This game is a much-needed learning curve before the World Cup, as that game brought us back to reality & serves as a reminder that we are not an invincible team, unlike previous WCQ matches.
That response Herdman showed me @ a very tough San José environment has made me very optimistic & I’m sure many Canadian national team fans. Let’s hope for our sake that Canada make it to the World Cup on March 27th against Jamaica as a much needed statement win.
and btw, we don’t need to care about the growth of hockey. We should just focus on our own growth & how that growth can be controlled. Best case let both soccer & hockey & even other sports like basketball thrive on our national.

Despite the loss, this was the most impressive WCQ match for Canada. Down to to 10 men, had an amazing second half dominating with possession and many opportunities to score, just couldn't get that final finishing touch! Just wasn't meant to be tonight. Fair play to Costa Rica on surviving the second half and getting the win. All the better though as the boys will get it done on Sunday at home in front of a packed BMO field! Plus Kone was very impressive, a very bright future ahead for this team with the new addition! Lets gooo Canada! Allez Les Rouges!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Absolutely. It's also a good opportunity for the team to learn about discipline, and how they feel when they are not in the driver's seat. Better to learn these lessons now than in the big games. I definitely liked what I saw from the team here even if the result was not what we wanted.

You couldn’t tell the Canadian offense was missing a player, very beautiful football even in a loss because of a dive.
tbh at 36" ish i lost hope for a win, the ball got out of bounds, so it was canada ball. they were pushing, but johnston threw the ball in his own zone which i didn't like... it's like at that very moment, they lost all momentum and looked lazy for the remainder of the 1st half. at 45+ the goal came from sloppy defensive coverage. borjan was overly desperate to cover the centre of his net, so he failed to cover the left - from his perspective - and his teammates' positioning didn't help either. as a whole, i think johnston's decision hurt more than being down a man, otherwise it would've been a 0-0 draw.

@@jeffersonsteelflex6869 no, i have eyes. sometimes, the most mundane actions have the most dire consequences, on an objective metric, johnston throwing the ball to his own end shouldn't have affected anything, but it did. it slowed his teammates down - as now they had to regroup in their own end, rather than maintain an offensive push - and even though it was a mundane moment in the game, team canada wasn't as commited as before.
it's 0-0 in the 2nd half, and canada comes back home 7-0-5 or 8-0-4. nonetheless, i still predicted a rican W way back in jan.
Incredible stat is that this is Canada men's first defeat in FIFA WCQ 2022 in their 12th match. They've won 7, drawn 4 till then.

It was one of those life moments where i realized a nation of people are pure garbage. In soccer and costa rica you become a hero for faking an injury, faking a fall, get an opponent penalized. In Canada, you become a hero by standing tall, playing through pain and adversity, and showing heart and sportsmanship. I desperately want Canada to qualify, however, maybe this will be a lesson in celebrating too early for some of the pundits out there who have been acting like they are already in Qatar. They are going once they have qualified, no sooner.
Still, a solid performance and big heart from the lads.
Despite that laughable red card and being down a player, Canada had plenty of opportunities to put this game away - so many shots off the posts, and they controlled the time of possession. Still two games left to lock up their position in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with one game on home turf. Lesson learned: stay disciplined and don't feed into the obvious provocations by an opponent. That sort of stupid show of dominance at a time in the game when momentum was on their side was selfish and ill-advised. Better they get on with this and put this fluke behind them.
I agree completely that it shouldn't have been a red card because the first yellow wasnt deserved. However put yourself in the players shoes and think how foolish and selfish it was to earn that 2nd yellow. Mental clarity is huge and he cost his team by putting his emotions first. So I'm not too angry about the red. Serves as a lesson going forward to put the team first.
It was not a red card, second yellow. It could have been a red in the first contact, the ref gave him a chance, but he insisted to get sent out. They need to get some control over their emotions.

Since I've been a kid growing up watching soccer in Canada, but being used to the sporting culture of the NHL, I've been telling all those around me that what FIFA needs to do is institute a policy where players are suspended retroactively as 'fouls' are reviewed after games when one can watch carefully with slow-motion replays. It's the only way to purge this horrible mentality from the sport.

I have seen some joke yellow and red cards in my day (especially in ConCacaf but the 2nd yellow to Kaye has to go down as one of the worst ever. That Costa Rican player went down like he was hit by a sniper. What is the point of VAR when terrible playacting like that gets rewarded with a player being unfairly removed from the game?

También se notó demasiado la diferencia física que hay entre ambas selecciones, y con el pasar del tiempo, el partido se ponía cuesta arriba para Costa Rica. Tras de eso, los cambios fueron desafortunados.

We have to say we were very lucky this time. Canada is nowadays a better side than Costa Rica in every aspect of the game. Sometimes you can shorten that gap in a 90-minute match. I'm impressed how Costa Rica won most high crosses on both ends. Beating Canada with a header was unexpected. Anyhow, I don't see the top three teams crumbling down at the end of the road. The intercontinental playoffs against New Zealand will be a face off between Costa Rica and Panama.
I said 2 months ago that Costa Rica would win this game and I was right. Based on the flop from Panama, Costa Rica are in the driver seat to get to the playoff vs New Zealand.
