Toyota 2GR: Everything You Need to Know

  • The Toyota 2GR was an engine platform with a few different variations and offers a great amount of performance for its size. It's such a good performer, that it can even be found in supercars from Lotus and Bolwell. Although the 2GR isn't a popular engine swap, it's still a great engine.

Great family of engines. Their are some key differences between them though and parts aren't interchangeable. One key reason why this engine is popular is it can access 90% of its torque at 1300Revs. The FSE has 30 bolts holding the crank and they designed it to run 12 injectors from factory. The thing these engines really need is to be sleeved or run a close deck. Sadly they don't have a lot of hype and thus limited aftermarket support but the potential is available.

@@yukonstriker1703 No engines come from factory as a closed deck. You'd need to hit up a performance shop. But really unless you were trying to hit over 600 whp then I don't see the point. You could achieve good power on a stock block with a Centrifugal supercharger with the FSE as proven with RR Racing & a quick search you can find a Twin Turbo IS350 with a Standalone ECU pushing 650whp. The FE platform has had a number of people run various setups from NA, Turbo & Supercharged with much success and documented results.

I'm in New Zealand and have a Blade Master, which is a flash Corolla really, but with the 2GR FE under the hood. A real sleeper, as it looks like every other small car out there, but will run a 14 second quarter mile. Amazingly economical too, Just a pity that damned rattle at startup is virtually impossible to fix. Biut, a beautiful engine otherwise,

NZ as well. My Aurion hauls ass and I always wondered what the Blades are like. With regards to the start up rattle, I tried my luck by adding Rislone engine treatment for a while, and used engine flush additive before doing my next oil change.

What I found (and saved me from buying) was that the 07-08 (possibly 09) were the oil burners. I must've looked at the history of 20 cars and was close to buying two when I read they were taken in for oil consumption issues. If I recall there was 5-6 cars out of the 20 that were taken to the dealer. After that I read on clublexus that they changed oil control rings on the 09 or 10. I ended up buying a 2010 that hasn't used any oil yet, and I've beat on it. some guys is/gs burn a quart every 500 miles!

That’s just how they have it tuned for power and fuel economy. You might be able to get away with 89 but only if you plan on not pushing it hard and go easy on the throttle. But if you have a loaded car or plan on doing a lot of highway driving or drive a little aggressively than I would definitely use the better gas, you should anyway but that’s the basics of it.

The alternator is sensitive. Will give up at about 50k miles.
The pulleys will start getting noisy as u rack up mileage. This will make ur car sound like it's very old. Change all of them at 50k miles as well
The engine deserves a better catalytic converter as it needs to exhale properly to get that HP
The vacuum system has some cheap plastic that will give way over time. Be on the look out for that.
