Honestly the spiney leaf insect doesnt look like its properly weaponized yes it has spikes, but it didnt use it very well
I refuse to believe that these mantises aren't intelligent to some degree. They observe their prey and make an informed decision based on their observations and then attack if they think it's safe. They also know exactly where to strike to make sure they have the easiest manner of handling said prey. This can't be 100% hard-wired instinct here, c'mon.

She just talked about in the episode that they don't want to be harmed and so they think long and hard about where the best place to attack is and when so it is safe. She also talked about how they go for the head so they stop struggling. lmao, she literally said all of this. It's been pretty universally agreed on that Mantids are extremely inteligent and hunt and think above instinct.
It is true that mantises are intelligent in the way they process information (from input to output), which is kind of the definition of intelligence, but they have much to envy from our human brains, which can process bigger quantities of more versatile and general information

I’ve had the spiny leaf as a pet they are amazingly interesting and so big I never handled the big ones their grips are powerful the one in the video is female and they are much bigger than the males, I’ve just got a giant rainforest mantis also, fascinating creatures
