I remember one summer I caught a mantis and put a katydid in the tank with it . I had know idea at the time that the katydid was aggressive. The katydid attached the mantis and it was like wrestle mania .They slung each other from one end of the tank to the other .However the mantis won the battle .

This video is a fraud. They first announced that both bugs are of equal size and then pitted a smaller mantis against the katydid. An equally sized mantis would easily destroy a katydid. No bugs stand a chance against a fully grown mantis except ONE superbug : - the giant (japanese) Asian hornet.

I like to imagine the Katydid started life as a herbivore but spent years of other insects shouting "KATY DID WHAT" until it snapped and started eating them all.
Saw a katydid in my living room when I had a pet praying Mantis the match up was exactly the same as shown here so as you could tell my mantis could only finish half of the katydids body before she became full. Never knew my mantis would've been in danger.

Why is it that literally every battle with a mantis is extremely disproportionate I mean either the mantis towers over its opponent and devours it in like 1/50th of a second or its against something twice its size and its like "oh the mantis fearlessly strikes but it made a mistake so its dead" like seriously the mantis has only ever won three times and one was against a leaf bug I mean can we please have at least one fair mantis fight were both opponents are the same size?

Giant Rainforest Mantis Vs. Spiny Leaf Insect (Unspecified sizes but they looked similar, however the spiny leaf insect is a herbivore so I mean come on)
Times the Mantis Lost:
Predatory Katydid Vs. Green Praying Mantis (Unspecified sizes but the katydid was visibly larger)
Brazilian Wandering Spider Vs. Hooded Mantis (Brazilian Wandering Spider:5 inches Hooded Mantis: 4 inches)
House Centipede Vs. Swift Tree Mantis (Unspecified sizes but the house centipede is clearly at least twice the size of the mantis)
Grey Tree Runner Mantis Vs. Lichen Huntsman Spider (Unspecified sizes but the Lichen Huntsman is visibly larger than the mantis)
Bronzed Huntsman Spider Vs. Slender Necked Mantis (Bronzed Huntsman Spider:4 inches Slender Necked Mantis:2 inches)
Looking at all these battles you can clearly see that the mantis has never been in a battle that is the same size, and the only times it was at all close in size was the Lichen Bark Vs. Rock Spider and the Brazilian Wandering Spider Vs. Hooded Mantis but even still 1 1/2 inches is only 75% of 2 inches and 4 inches is only 80% of 5 inches so it really is quite disproportionate. The mantis really should be in a video with a bug that is the same size. (Also I am going to link all the videos below so that you can see when I say visibly larger you can see that I am not lying and not just using my opinion as evidence).

Mantids would lose to anything it's size or up... Smaller prey is easier game and bigger ones aren't going to be easy.

And a female Empusid which measures 10cm (moth faced with brushy antennas and stick like body) is easily a meal for a young pre adult male Mantis religiosa.

I have been watching these Bug wars episode for the last few weeks..I must say these are just AMAZING!!!... i do agree there are some some mismatch-Predator vs prey ..but most of the episodes are very entertaining and very informative too. Some of the creatures we seen on this channel i never heard before..I thought Katytids very vegeterian lol

Finally, someone who isn't rabid about this show's sound choices. Also, you'd be more likely to find an alien lifeform that looked like a giant arthropod and made mammalian/avian/reptilian vocalizations than a na'vi or a humanoid-looking alien, so in some sense, these sound choices are accurate when looking at it from a different viewpoint.

There's a bit of misrepresentation here, since we're not looking at bugs "fighting" the way its described in the show, but the pageantry really dresses up this hunting footage pretty well, really makes this one of the best bug shows to watch on youtube.

Sometimes I see these videos more like a "Big, Strong Predator vs Prey" recordings more than actual fights. This time was no exception, though I first imagined it, just like the narrator said, upside down. I really didn't expected the Katydid to win until I got to know a little more about him and then realize he was, in fact, the mightier predator in this case.
The narrator has a great voice and dramatic inflections. The katydid had considerably more body mass, with the big, powerful, armored head and mandibles. From the beginning, I couldn't see the mantis being able to lock it down, not to mention the katydid's walking and hopping legs were larger than the mantis's grabbing legs. Not much chance for this mantis.

The praying mantis is my favorite insect of all time, well my only favorite insect, when I was little I put the praying mantis in the jar and poke holes on top of the lid, and I fed it crickets flies and grasshoppers. I love to watch it eat. That Was the good ole days.🤗

The mantis seems to be very smart in my experience because it recognizes it's surroundings. Not just that but I've seen some big ones.

There are bigger mantises out there that share the same habitat as Hexacentrus sp, that can easily take on the katydid.
But balloon winged katydids are great predators.

Aaron W. Its not a baby mantis, its an adult since it has wings. But you are right you can easily find mantis species what are larger than Hexacentrus katydids.
For comparison, the Katydid is just over 30mm, and the mantis is tiny AF. Some asian mantises can grow over 80mm.
