You need an ISTJ around the house to do it, you'll never have fluff and hair on your shirt again.
My ISTJ dad always used double-sided sticky tape or picked it off when walking behind me, seeing the wild, long INFP hairs sticking on my shirt.
We never did get to the complete root of the problem which was my INTP mother not using dryer sheets in the dryer to remove static cling because she had nerdy allergies...
ISTJ traditionalist Dad never pointed this out anyway. But, he noticed other stuff all the time. Like leaves under my car the next morning after I'd run into a hedge the night before.
ISTJs are far more dynamic and interesting than most people give them credit for.
They can be very creative, independent and individualistic.
I absolutely agree. I, an INFJ, would have continued to be dismissed as a ridiculous wild idea fairly, if It were not for the loyalty and diligence of a "very creative, independent and individualistic" military General of an ISTJ colleague and friend. Instead, together we solve problems no one else can solve.

Hi, I'm ISTJ, and I noticed that, even though we are supposed to be one of the most common types, when it comes to types you see commenting or interacting on CZcams, we are among the rarest. I think that many people who quickly label ISTJs as "rigid", "uninteresting", "boring", "traditional" fail to see that we can also be fun - in our own way - but to find that out you also have be willing to get to know us. One of my law professors (also ISTJ) has a dry sense of humour that I appreciate a lot, and he's one of the kindest professors I've ever had.
I'm also convinced that many people usually don't think about our sensuous approach to things: as a hobby, I love sewing and nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to find a gorgeous fabric to turn into a well-fitting garment. Or when I'm out taking pictures and suddenly the light seems just perfect. I live for those moments and I can get so lost in them that someone else has to "bring me back to reality".

ISTJs get a bad rap as being boring but they're actually quite quirky and really funny once you get to know them. They're also super smart (I just love 2nd slot Te)...which is anything but boring.

Aren't they the most common? Forgive me for seeming like an @ss, but I have to say it: most of the world is obviously not "super smart".
Just because they predominantly use their thinking it doesn't mean they use it well. It just means they prefer it over feeling. If you want to add "super" in front of "smart", you can probably do that only with Intuitive dominant people, and of course not all of those either.
@@Leonhart_93 I'm an INTP so I wouldn't be offended even if you were being an ass. I've always been of the mindset (even more so since studying typology) that there are many different types of intelligence. I'm also not one of these intuitives who thinks all intuitives are innately smarter than all sensors. I will concede the point that I should have qualified by not labeling "all" ISTJs as super smart....but my Ti reserves the right to decice for itself what qualifies as "super smart". We're both showing our biases here--as a Ti dom I really appreciate Te aux (I prefer it in the form of an INTJ but also find it very useful and refreshing in the form of an ISTJ. I categorically disagree with the statement that the label "super smart" can only be applied to intuitive doms--ENFPs can be quite brilliant but that Ti blind sure looks dumb to me most of the time (bias again--see? To me, logic and then rational are the highest forms of intelligence but I recognize that there is also common sense, emotionally intelligence and on and on and on) I never said that ISTJs using Te above Fi is what makes them super smart--they have phenonomonal memories and a very real grasp of concrete events and of their surroundings. If you're implying in a round-about way that ISTJs are quite common (they are) and that most humans are stupid--I do accept your premise if not the actual details. Humans are smart amd stupid, both.
@@Jess-yv7zc I wouldn't call them 'super smart' tho but rather 'refined' on what they're doing. They're more 'predictable' and 'hard-working like a horse'. In a world that's moving from swords to gunpowder era, I image them as a blacksmith who keeps honing their skills and makes the best refined swords/katanas, while I, as an INTJ, would be moving into gun.
There is no way I would have the tenacity of an ISTJ honing the same stuff over and over unless that's the last resort lol......

I would love that too..istj here. I struggle communicating with infj's. I'm very logical and straight forward and use less feelings..which gets percieved like I don't care..I'm just less driven by emotion and more by logical and practical ways of discussing topics. However it tends to upset the over sensitive types easily.. even when I don't mean too.

My father is 81 years old ISTJ, and I can't admire him more. Even though he is traditionalist, he is interested in learning new skills and he exercises regularly, so he looks 10 years younger. Did I mention he's still working? So more videos about ISTJ!

To me, ISTJ are soooo underrated. My father was and my husband is ISTJ. They are NOT boring. They provide the stability, predictability and order that allows me to be myself (ISFP/ISTP). They work hard but know how to play when it is time for that. They are realistic . Yes, they are set in their ways but when something clearly doesn’t work they will innovate. They may not prioritize aesthetics but they do appreciate them when they see them. They are affectionate. Because of them the family goes on trips to places like Yosemite National Park which is not easy to arrange since getting reservations usually requires a miracle. We may disagree sometimes but they stick around through thick and thin. They ARE creative in practical ways building things we use like bookshelves or Christmas yard decorations. They appreciate the need to attend Church regularly. They are humble and unassuming too but people notice their dignity.
I can’t believe CZcamsrs so often fail to give them credit for being usually pleasant with a playful sense of humor.

Istj, I appreciate you for your attention to detail, consideration of beautiful scenes such as nature and historical objects, your ability to learn from experiences and grow authentic wise ness over time, your ability to be someone’s rock without even having to approach people- something about u guys is genuine and predictable when opening up to and I love that, your playfulness in the sense that u can be the one in the group that people tease and take it lightly, your dad jokes which make u so uncool yet so real at the same time ahahah, ur ability to say calm in stressful situations just so that u can sort out what is going on clearly, ur skill at board games, your detailed and specific stories from the past that being such imagination and nostalgia to te people around you, and the appreciation you have for the compliments that people give to you. You rlly are such valuable people to have in someone’s life, you being such stability and realism to those around you, you rlly ground people without having to sell yourself to them. Your routines and logical mind make ur life something so unstressful for others to join because of the order- it doesn’t create anxiety for what to expect next and it’s so refreshing to see someone rlly seem to know what they are doing. You guys are listeners even if u have a huge map of the next forest walk you are going to have (step by step ) in your head because u never interrupt anyone. That is so sweet! I've had to learn to speak for myself, although I prefer that my work speak for me. Gratitude is gratifying to see. It certainly is a growing process, and I am glad to have an ENFJ in my life to help with social pointers.

Like ecosystems, species are the most resilient when they're diverse. Ecosystems with little biodiversity tend to be the most fragile and species with little genetic variability are the most prone to extinction.
I don't think the human species would benefit from every individual having the same cognitive type. That's why there are different personality types in the first place. Also we don't even know if personality is genetic so we can't really assume personality is tied to natural selection.
You could even argue that the fact they are so common is evidence they won the evolution game- the best genes for the environment get conserved. I'm INTJ and I believe if all humans were INTJs the human race would die.
@Luce M Without intuitives there wouldn't be much change or progress, but without SJs there wouldn't be anyone interested in maintaining what we've already learned and achieved.
@@andreagreenwood93 I'm also an intj and it's almost as though you've pulled the thoughts out of my mind, hence confirmed them thoroughly. when I think about this type (istj), I think sheer "survival". it's because I know I'm not good at it. which has drawn me to a conclusion that I need an istj in my life.
My strongest ally at work is a mature ISTJ. He enables me (an INFJ) to create foolproof plans that make sense to the other 14 types. If I can convince my ISTJ colleague that my idea - no matter how unusual - will solve or prevent a problem, then together we can convince everyone else.

@@lovewho Yeah, even after 8 years, we are still a bit of a mystery to one another. Fortunately, each of us has learned from experience that the other is almost always correct. So, he accepts the mystery of my intuition and the folly of me trying to save humanity, while I accept and act on seemingly useless sensory information that he deems to be of critical importance to our success.
The guy I'm seeing now is an ISTJ. I'm an INFJ and I've been studying our functions and how they actually complement each other. I'm so excited because I'll be able to learn how to improve my minor functions from him and vice versa! I just need to help him see the same point. I hope he and I are going toward a more serious stage. Wish us luck!

I don't know if this is the case of other ISTJs, but in my case I don't correlate traditional = old-fashioned society ways.
In my case I understand "the tradition" as a routine in which I feel comfortable, having plans makes me feel safe about my environment and my decisions, the surprises and rapid changes make me worry because I don't know how to act in those situations and I don't like feeling vulnerable so I stick to what gives me the certainty that it works. The tradition for me is that routine/process that has always worked before. However, I have ideas that do not adhere to the "traditional" way of thinking. I am an atheist, I am a feminist, I accept all sexualities and I do not judge people. I'm openen minded because of what I believe it's right. In my case, I like to have an organized and planned life on the outside, but that doesn't mean I'm outdated with my ideals. Therefore, I don't have a problem following the rules if they make sense according to my values.
I don't even know if this makes sense. English is not my first language so it's kinda difficult to express my thoughts.
Firstly, your English is excellent! Secondly, being traditional is definitely not something that is an essential aspect of being an ISTJ. I would however add one caveat that new traditions do have to be created and (judging from your profile picture) you seem young. So it will be interesting to see how the beliefs you have now will change over time. Yes, exactly. Traditions for me are long-term rules and standards I've held myself to throughout my life. Mostly, my whole life is about upholding the morals and standards I've decided for myself. Most likely due to third slot FI- I find that most ISTJ's are some of the most steadfast people who's internal moral values never change. Also, it might be just for me, but my internal personality compared to the personality I use for working is so, so vastly different. At work and school I almost always take the traditional approach. I keep people in line, do things exactly to procedure and ect. At home or with friends, I'm literally constantly writing and making ideas with NE. When I feel secure enough, creation and expression is something I care about above all else. Just my thoughts though.
@@lovewho But if it's "new" traditions, isn't it already not following tradition? Feminism is as old as tradition and older than sexism. There have even been matriarchal societies, yet it is seemed as untraditional which makes me believe that tradition in itself is something from a culture that most agrees with, not something from a culture that has always existed. However, since a practice has long been dominating over another practice for the reason that it has more followers, they give that practice the name of tradition: followed by majority and have been there for a long time.

"ISTJs can be overly controlling" We had a group work at school and in the end I did everything because I just didn't trust my group members. Just the thought of handing in a powerpoint with tasks and results that I didn't check gave me anxiety. Anyone out there with the same problem?

I work on cars, anytime a coworker jumps in on my job. I will stop looking them dead in the eye. Do exactly as I tell you. Do not deviate from it. Usually they follow, or go away.
Yes same here, but mainly having to re-do and fix all the mess that the other students did because they didn't give a darn about their parts and the whole thing would have failed if I hadn't patched and fixed it all up. I hate group projects. I don't like my grade being dragged down by lazy incompetent people who don't care.

I’ve been scrolling through the comment section and realized that we istjs are higly underrated and overlooked. I used to feel mad about being an istj because they said that we are rigid and partypoopers and just boring, now I’ve learned that we are actually pretty cool. I related to the “keeps the fridge full of food” part Bc its so true, I crave stability and mantaining the order of things
As an INFJ, my ISTJ daughter has made me cry, often. Until...I started learning about the MB personality types. Now I understand how she views the world and can appreciate her grounded perspective. I give her fact and details and keep my abstract prattle to a minimum. Wish I had known this years ago.

My sister is an ISTJ and like you, there have been moments she's hurt me but she doesn't see how...I'm learning more about her type to try and connect with her better. She can be quite blunt at times and unreasonable with her viewpoint and I can walk away exhausted after a visit. However, she is loving in her own way and wants to be close to me....I just find her quirks a little hard to handle :-D

Before I got into MBTI, I assumed that ISTJs were pretty boring like most people, but over time I sort of realized that they're nothing like that. I have two ISTJ teachers that are actually pretty interesting. One is my Social Studies teacher who was not as strict as most people might perceive ISTJs to be, he had a lot of insight about politics and current issues and was probably the main reason I became interested in Social Studies again, he strived to make other students not fail his class even though it's not their one of their interests. Another was my Physics teacher, who is a bit more strict and wants it done his way no matter what, but also shows his quirky nature from time to time by making jokes. He's not really patient but pushes us to work hard and doesn't sugarcoat things when they're difficult. Overall, ISTJs are the overlooked type that holds everybody together without the need for recognition, which is very respectable and something to be admired.
INFP here with a very important ISTJ in my life, keeping me grounded in reality and helping me meet the obligations I believe so strongly in. I would definitely be interested in seeing more ISTJ videos! :)

Same here! I come up with the hijinks and my ISTJ reminds me of the logistics so they'll come to fruition.
When I was first getting into MBTI way before I knew orders of functions I was typed as ISTJ. Upon further analysis and rigorous re-assessments It became clear that I was INTJ, just with a very developed sensory approach. I’ll always consider ISTJ as the workhorses that actually rule the foundations of the world’s development. They’re the engineers to the architects. And for that reason I’ll always respect ISTJs. It’s a shame I don’t see many that often.
I am an INTJ, but I was never able to relate to an ISTJ. Seems like a difference between devloped and u devloped INTJ is farther than what I thought.

How did you find you are not an ISTJ?
When Istj's are very healthy in their Ne, I think they are truly the most remarkable. They can be so insightful once they begin to use it and tend to become the best mentors when they allow themselves to be open to possibilities. Their stability keeps them grounded as Si truly works wonders for them. While I personally share no cognitive functions with this type, I truly admire them and I think that it's the best thing for them to be the most common type of all. One of the many things they are underrated for is their care and empathy towards the people closest to them. These people are loyal and steady, the bad reputation they have for being 'boring' is something that I wish wasn't the case. I really love these people
My husband is an ISTJ, and the thing about them is that they seek the best way of doing things. They may not innovate, but they test the rules and optimize processes and if an ISTJ finds them good and solid, they stick to it and you can be pretty certain, it really is the most efficient way. To me, as an INFJ, his logical and stable approach just gives peace and stability.
I'm reading the bible and this video made me think of Moses in the desert as a possible archetypal ISTJ figure -- introverted, sober, a giver of the law, keeping the newly freed Israelites from wavering from their covenant with Yahweh.

J H Well Jesus was certainly a maverick who refused under pretty much every circumstance to compromise his ideals... very abstract in relating to the world around him... compassionate and giving yet not sparing the feelings of others... hmm... ENFP?

My partner is ISTJ and I am INFP. I never thought I would be with someone like him. We really enhance each other's life though. He really takes care of me while also encouraging me to explore! All he asks of me is my affection. :-) Lol, you mentioned refrigerators; the first thing he did when he moved in was organize the fridge and pantry.
Love this!! I have an ISTJ mom and two ISTJ brothers and yeah how much they overemphasize their “plans” that they freak out about is spot on. But I will say, they are way more open minded than they get credit for. They argue very harshly so people mistake that for rigidity, but if you decide not to get offended and argue with them with logic, they actually will listen. ISTJs can even become revolutionary if you work on them long enough and appeal to their inferior Ne haha.
In a world constantly causing upheaval to tried and true ancient wisdom, holding down traditional values is a steady, revolutionary act.

My bestie is an istj. she's one of the most goofy, talented, and artistic person I know.

i have a crush on a guy at work, and I'm almost certain he's an ISTJ. Of course I can be certain without forcing him to take a test, but he has many of these qualities. I admire his work ethic, his dedication, his reliability. He is a little rigid at times when he's working or studying, but he's also got a great sense of humor and he's down-to-earth. He's also playful and likes to help people.
An ISTJ here. Thanks for the video, Nathan. A few thoughts:
1. Commenter Bubs333221 mentioned she has an ISTJ boyfriend who thinks in terms of pictures. I do this a lot myself, and was admittedly not entirely aware of it until she mentioned it. It makes sense, though, as seemingly a lot of ISTJs like myself love to watch videos, television, and what not. As one might guess, video/television watching is a form of self-soothing, though I've made efforts to make it more educational as well with videos such as these.
2. Bubs333221 also mentioned ISTJs talking to themselves. I discovered years ago that doing this can help me think more clearly and intelligently. So sometimes I do this when others aren't around to get my mind to start reasoning better, or I may work through a problem verbally in front of others in real time if I'm in a conversation with them.
3. Commenter Margo S mentioned the ISTJ love of tools and their accumulation of them. I had a fellow ISTJ as a friend for years, and she has tons practical items for the areas she is interested in, particularly cooking. While I am far more minimalist in terms of owning physical items, I tend to accumulate information in terms of books, courses, and the like though the vast majority of this information is digital. So yes, I do have the ISTJ collection trait, but mine just happens to be a lot less visible unless it is being accessed.
4. Commenter Maureen Brown mentioned that ISTJs don't prioritize aesthetics, but value them if they're there. That has certainly been my experience.
5. Speaking of typing MBTI through using online tests: I'm not sure if this the best way to type someone as they may not go into enough depth. When I first got into the subject, I used a book to type myself and had to go through a lot soul searching and self analysis over a few days before I was able to come up with my type. Later information gathered from other sources helped to confirm my initial type assessment.
6. Finally, more ISTJ videos, please. MBTI CZcams videos and the accompanying comment sections of them have been very enlightening, and I would like to hear more about my own type.

I have an ISTJ internet acquaintance. We never became particularly close, because the only thing we have in common is a love of fitness and exercise, and even in that regard we have quite different opinions. She is quite stubborn, and has sometimes agreed that I'm right when discussing something, but still holds on to her beliefs, which I don't get at all. I got the impression she is quite a consistent worker at her job, and she keeps to herself and refuses to engage in other people's drama. I don't know if I can ever connect with an ISTJ, but I think I like them. Maybe even admire to some extent.
Is she an ISTJ though? Cause "beliefs" aren't really reliable source of opinion. Facts are way more important for us.
My dad's an istj, he likes collecting various antiques as his hobby, our house is quite filled with this.
One time our family told him he needs to give some away to make more room space, he gets in a fit of rage and is stubbornly impossible to reason with.
Nobody in the household talks about minimalism in front of him.. Well you know...
He says this things hold strong sentimental value and brings nostalgic comfort to him and that we can get rid of it once he's gone.

I (INFJ) had a very hard time to convince my mother (ISTJ) to get rid of some very old and worn out furniture and stuff of all kinds. It took awhile but she finally understood that less stuff can be beneficial. But she kept all the supposedly antique objects and is very proud of owning them for some reason.

I do hope that, as you continue pondering our type, you'll come to the realization that we don't necessarily defend traditions for their own sake, but rather, if we personally have enjoyed the tradition. Introverted Sensing is also about personal comfort, so our own self-imposed routines will be the primary focus of our preservation, unlike the ESTJs, who sorta just defend tradition.
Still, very informative. I try not to over-subscribe to too many CZcamsrs, but if more folks start talking about my type, I'd like to promote that idea more, so consider me intrigued.

As someone who is Si dominant I would love to see a video about how sensuous our lives can be...I live for beauty, gorgeous fragrances, delicious food, soft fabrics, clean sheets, etc. I get so wrapped up in all the sights and smells of the world that I sometimes forget where I am. It's a fabulous way to experience the world and I wish everyone could. :-)

Hi, I'm ISTJ, and I noticed too that, even though we are supposed to be one of the most common types, when it comes to types you see commenting or interacting on CZcams, we are among the rarest (while there are loads of INFJs and INFPs). I think that many people who quickly label ISTJs as "rigid", "uninteresting", "boring", "traditional" fail to see that we can also be fun - in our own way - but to find that out you also have be willing to get to know us.
One of my law professors (also ISTJ) has a dry sense of humour that I appreciate a lot, and he's one of the kindest professors I've ever had.
I also agree on the fact that many people usually don't think about our sensuous approach to things: as a hobby, I love sewing and nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to find a gorgeous fabric to turn into a well-fitting garment. Or when I'm out taking pictures and suddenly the light seems just perfect. I live for those moments and I can get so lost in them that someone else has to "bring me back to reality".

I always used to get a migraine after a family outing, even thought I love music and love having fun, because of sensory overload. It's almost like a handicap. The worst part is how my family never understood - none of them ever got headaches, let alone migraines so bad the pain makes you throw up - so if you don't mind a bit of advice, please be gentle with those of us whose brains are not wired to withstand strong amounts of sensory stimulation like perfumes, flashing lights, loud music or at least, heavy base, or even rough-textured clothing.
I am always astonished how people can actually choose non-smooth, non-cotton cloth for fashion and when I ask how they can stand how it feels against their skin they say they don't even notice. It would spend the whole day distracted by my own clothing. There are things I do envy about other types. It took my ISTJ mother almost 15 years to remember that if she wants to buy me clothes, they must be SOFT. And that soft to her is not soft enough to me.
Very nice and accurate description of the ISTJ. They're super necessary for our society to be able to run smoothly and effectively, as you explained. But they are also extremely common and not so 'weird' as some of the other types and that's why I think they are sometimes not so interesting to delve into. They seem so 'normal' ;-)
I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I love ISTJ's. I find their stability, practicality and loyalty very soothing and pleasant.
I finally can confirm I am ISTJ. SI: I always think of the past, If I see something, I would feel like.. "Hey, this is how I felt when..." When I encounter something new at school back then, I was like, "dang, why do I always struggle with new concepts when some of my peers get them right away" but AFTER I learned it, it's mine. Always felt like, why is it hard for me when I haven't experienced something yet. Though some people might feel the same way, some people love new things. I don't, to some extent. I always reflect on things and always wonder if I could travel back in time. TE: I have this desire to control my environment, the money I have to spend, the grocery that should last for n amount of time, the people around me etc. Though I don't use lists and label things, they're in my head already. I like writing things down though. FI: I'm personal, if something says something against what I believe in, I take offense, really, like I want to beat them up. It's my TE wanting to put them in place since my FI is hurt. NE: If an NE dominant can think of a hundred different ways to do things, I can list a hundred ways they can fail. Jeez, now I know myself! Sorry, for the long post. Now, I can work on myself to be a better version of myself.

I'm ISTJ and my wife is an ENFP - I love her so much. She's cheerfull, not so organized and almost always thinks positive which is what I lack the most as I'm often pesimistic and overly analytical. ISTJ here. Thank you for creating this video. The Te function is definitely my biggest asset to walk through life. But it certainly can be boring and rigid. It has to go through the steps of “If A then B then C then D then E”, just to promote maximum clarity and precision in communicating. Intuitive types can find this overwhelming, but surprisingly the mature ones tend to enjoy it. The Si is like a giant archive with infinite shelves and categories. Overtime, due to the Fi, some experiences that seem to be less and less important, are being put into the “recycle bin”. I’ve had my fair share of being told indirectly as boring or too serious but also humorous and reliable. Not really want to care much about it though as long as I keep living with my values. ISTJ here! Thank you so much for making this video! Your points were incredibly accurate. We ISTJs love stability and often value it over everything else, even our own desires. For example, I absolutely love creative writing. I spend upwards of twenty hours a week writing and treat it like a part time job. (Even with something creative I've managed to turn it into a routine) But as careers in writing can be so unpredictable, the idea of pursuing writing as a permanent career terrifies me. Instead of becoming a writer, I would much rather pursue a stable career that I'm good at (like financing, surprise surprise) even if I’m not passionate about it. Anyways, it's amazing to see so many fellow ISTJs in the comments. Thanks for sharing your stories and opinions! And thanks to everyone else for saying such kind things about us, despite the perception of ISTJs being boring and stuffy.
I’m an ISTJ! very helpful and insightful! We get a bad rep for being boring but I’m thankful you broke down the nuances of our functions to bring them into a positive light. All types are important. And I appreciate those who explain each type (not just their favorites) to help bring understanding, respect and unity to all types. Thanks! It’s actually very hard to find quality ISTJ videos because we’re the “most common”. So you tubers just think, why is it necessary? A bunch of people running around like robots running the boring tasks of the world. The order their pens, eat the same breakfast, and have a strict schedule. Not much to them. Haha. But there is a method to our.... order (madness for other types I’m sure lol). Videos that help explain and encourage acceptance of ISTJ’s are helpful. Everyone thinks the N types are mysterious and complex (which is true of course!) but S types also have a range of depth and intricacy that goes unnoticed.
I think what would also be helpful are food for thought videos that challenge our weaker cognitive functions. Maybe explain our negative feedback loops (I think also referred to as Catastrophe mode? Haha).

This is my dad to a T (and an I, S, and J), he cares about things being done right and is very focused on the details, is good at planning ahead, has a good memory, is blunt but usually polite and not very comfortable in social settings and in the past was prone to bad habits (he still eats unhealthy). He likes history and has a strong faith. He's very helpful to his family and church in practical ways and is retired but was a good worker.
Also he doesn't laugh a lot but he's good at telling jokes. And he wrote a fiction book that was good, it's Christian apologetic fiction.
It's a sign of typology maturity when you can clearly illustrate the potential of each type (and even cognitive function) to possess excellence, while also tactfully articulating ways in which a type (or cognitive function) could improve on likely vulnerabilities. Thanks as always, Nathan! :P

My mum is ISTJ and what you said about pessimistic Ne makes a LOT of sense. When i knew little about mbti i thought she was INTJ because whenever anyone suggested an idea she would immediately consider every possible way it could go horribly wrong. She is extremely over protective and cautious about everything because of this. I thought this was Ni "seeing the future" until I realised she is ISTJ. Tertiary Fi has a big effect on her personality too, she's the type to get along with everyone because of how good natured she is except when she feels something is unjust, in these cases she can be very blunt and uncaring about the emotional impact of her words because her values have been hurt. I think with INFP (me) the Si and Fi create very individualistic values based on personal prior experiences which shape our behaviour, this makes us seem sensitive by getting upset about things that others don't understand. Whereas with ISTJ the Si and Fi cause them to care deeply about values formed by their external environment (maybe society/family/values they grew up with or traditional ones) which makes them seem rigid or inflexible because they get upset when a '"rule" or tradition that they follow and expect others to follow, has been broken. Idk if this is a common thing but the ISTJs I've met have all had a really strong sense of humour

I’m an ISTJ and can relate to most of what you say. However, I think we can be quite innovative especially in terms of changing or developing practical things that aren’t working. We see flaws in systems very clearly and if that’s the case, we will spend time researching and developing something better.
Exactly. We really need to dismantle this weird idea that SJs are just doormats that stick to the same methods or whatever. I literally saw someone in this comments section say that ISTJs don’t change, develop or grow. Like what?? They’re saying this about human beings over some online personality typing system, it feels like they’re limiting their knowledge on how psychology actually works. It’s so….stupid lmao. It’s like they see tropes and caricatures, and not the complex individuals that each human naturally is.
I like how I, an ISTJ, nodded all throughout this video as all the points you presented, Nathan, really resonated with who I am and life experiences. If I may add, because of extraverted intuition, people perceive us as "boring" but they sooner come to realize how reliable we are due to our stability and reliability to keep the systems up and running.

This is by far the best video on ISTJs I have seen. Such an underappreciated and underutilized type! Huge potential for comedy too, despite their reputation as being boring and predictable (though actually, that might be the reason why…). It always fascinates me why the type that is supposed to be the most common MBTI personality, is ironically the least represented on CZcams. It’s almost like they’re allergic to themselves, IMHO.

Thank you for this. I’m an INFJ and very interested in having my family members take the MBTI. I could not figure out my very emotionally private brother, though I suspected an Introvert Sensor. Turns out he’s an ISTJ and now I am more interested to learn about this type. I have a couple of ISTJs in the family and they are traditional types. They’re also very reliable and upstanding people. I have a lot of respect for them. So please, more content! (I’d also like to request some ESTJ love.)

I highly value my ISTJ friends. Dependable, loyal, good listeners and I do not find them boring. Some of them actually love and are deeply intrigued by the wild and weird (just would never indulge such things themselves). They can live out their more exploratory side vicariously through art and a small select collection of off-beat friends. It's impressive that they can indulge these things without becoming corrupted. I (INFJ) would end up in jail or something if I'm not super selective about my influences and the company I keep😬
But that's why I seek friendships with ISTJs. They're often a stabilizing, good influence on me and I keep them entertained with my weirdness and unpredictable ideas. Win-win.

As an ISTJ, I know for a fact that my views are far from popular a lot of the time. It's not exactly that ISTJs in my experience are skeptics by default. But we remember pretty much everything that has happened to us. We remember things that if they didn't happen to us, they happen to friends, and family.
Using literally what we would see as raw data, and data that is not only visible to us but consistently repeated with overall consistency in terms of method, reasoning, physical approach, all of that forms much of our basis of worldly understanding and processing. Now, I have a friend who I had a blow up with last night and he accused me of having "general statements" about my view of things. The thing is, I know he has not experienced what I have or seen what I have seen. The thing is, I can state what I have long held to be a truth, but even when you give evidence that is genuine raw experience and not a "generalized statement," what agonizes a lot of people like me, many won't accept the truth even if given ample proof for it.
But a weakness for someone like me and I think a lot of ISTJs, is that we have a hard time communicating what we see because I'll just say it, we have a hard time watering down a lot of things for those who may not always our view. It's not for lack of trying, it's just hard thing to do, especially when through experience, you know how a person will respond with a more than substantial degree of certainty.
We are not without our faults, I must emphasize this. The downfall of the ISTJ is that we are very much what I would call emotionally incompetent. For people such as us, the why and wherefores of you doing something is very important, having its place more than you realize. But how you go about the action, that is what is even more important. But this goes into what I would literally call the dark side of this personality type, we have largely no issue at all micro-managing the hell out of something if it means that is sustained and the product is what is desired by either us or our overseers. I fully admit, we would regulate something as mundane everyday bowel movements if we could, all for the sake of efficiency.
We have our good sides but that is very much as was said, emphasized in MAINTAINING our friends and families so they can be active and productive but also being happy themselves. A lot of what we do is fueled by genuine concern of someone or something and having it work at the best form possible for ALL effected parties.
In closing, are we assholes? Sure but mileage may vary. Are we stubborn? Yes. Are we lacking in compassion? Depends very much on the situation, but largely, despite belief, no. Do we care? You better believe it, otherwise we wouldn't dream of wasting our time on something or someone if we saw either as being a moot endeavor. In the end, we want things to work as they should. We desire and crave structure and order and largely justice. All of this stems from a desired respect and equality for everyone and for, ideally, reciprocation of these same respects from everyone. But for an ISTJ, make no mistake, it is no problem at all to strip away what are perceived as "freedoms" for the sake of genuine equality, justice, structure, and maintained functionality.

I think this is my personality type from the test I took and after relating to so much of what you said. My only thing is that my personal experiences and the things I’ve learned have led me to believe that a lot traditions in general just aren’t efficient and aren’t something I care to focus on preserving
As has often been said in this comment section before, ISTJs are NOT boring. Just because there's a lot of them does not mean they're boring. My dad is an ISTJ and he's the guy who took me to metal concerts and helped me make my cosplay weapons. He's also the guy who made arrangements so that I could get singing classes from my favorite singer. In his own words: "You're amazingly talented and it would just be a waste if you never explored it." I cannot stress enough how idiotic it is to think that all ISTJs are boring, rigid robots with no imagination.

We have a good relationship, but it's amazing how hard it is for us to relate on certain levels. He likes to talk about practical, real-world, physical things such as home improvement. I like to talk about ideas and concepts. Despite being very similar in certain aspects, we are almost like two different species when we communicate.
I still love him, though!
Non-ISTJs: "We need to change the world! Let's change everything! Nothing is right with how the world works! The old ways of thinking are done on this planet and we have absolutely no use for them anymore."
ISTJs: "Oh, really? Aren't you the same people who completely lost your s---t last March when you couldn't find toilet paper?"
I stated similar above: those holding down ancient wisdom and traditional values in a world constantly attempting upheaval of same are the true revolutionaries.
I believe my High School Valedictorian is an ISTj. He is also an accomplished graphic designer and video editor. The true brilliance of an ISTJ is the exceptional ability to discern.
I know someone who is ISTJ and I'm trying to get to know them better. It's really difficult because I think for me there is an expectation of a lot of transparency and spontaneity in relationships. This is really helping me learn. Definitely would appreciate more!
