The enormous wealth for Lance is his blessing and demise. He lacks hunger because he has never starved, lacks true desperation because he's never actually been helpless, he isn't workaholic because he's never have to work himself to absolute exhaustion day after day after day to achieve a goal far into the future, he's not a winner because his future has never depended on him winning (just perform good and that's it, different level of pressure). Lance is very self aware about his privileged upbringing and it shows that he feels kind of sad and sorry about it, he shouldn't apologise for being born in serious wealth, but he can do some work with some of that money to help people less fortunate. He doesn't seem to be the typical spoiled filthy rich kid, in fact seems very polite and a bit shy. So reasonably well raised in that context is awesome.
What Lance needs to succeed is to forge his character ASAP to fight that impostor syndrome so he can become a great driver. Currently he may say he wants to be world champion but he doesn't really believe it. I'd say Lance Stroll needs to somehow Nico Rosberg himself as a driver.
Quite a few of the top people in sports come from wealth. Take a look at all the other drivers and the upcoming drivers. For a parent to invest in most of these sports requires a ton of money. He's not limited by hunger, he's just not *as* talented as the others. It happens. Some people are mediocre compared to their peers. That's okay. The difference here is that his dad can afford to keep him on and not give up the seat to someone more deserving/qualified.
Lando Norris is quite a good counterpoint to Lance Stroll. He also comes from a very wealthy family, but if he didn’t perform at McLaren, his position would be in jeopardy. Lance (not my mate, but didn’t want to call him Stroll Jr.) doesn’t have that jeopardy, so perhaps there is no need to constantly improve every weakness. It may also affect how seriously people take Lance in the team, or how much they are prepared to challenge him.
We’ve seen at his best, Lance can get poles and podiums. We’ll only find out if he has the consistency to be in a top team when Aston Martin get there. I don’t think he will ever be a title challenger, but if Aston Martin have one of the quickest cars next season, Alonso will be. If Lance gets exposed fighting Perez, Sainz etc. then any other team would replace him with someone who can mix it up there.
If the AM car becomes legitimately competitive in the upper end of the midfield in the next season or two, Lance needs to lose his seat to a more accomplished driver. Alonso will get the most of the AM from the start, but as stated in the video, Lance usually has a few good results a season, inconsistent results the rest of the time. Lance could easily go drive sports cars or something to make way for a more competitive driver, if the AM is in position to get Best of the Rest in the next couple seasons. Is Stroll Sr that delusional about his son's F1 ability? Lance is fine in the AM for 2023, but beyond that, he may hold the team back.
Exactly. Lance will never improve, because his entire life and driver career is based on complacency. No amount of putting him next to F1 legends will change that.

Yeah, i think they need to pair him w/ a rookie who puts a fire under his ass. Lance getting beaten by multiple world champions has made him complacent.
Also getting beaten by Vettel and Alonso looks much better than getting beaten by a decent midfielder, so I think having those teammates gives him even more leeway to driving without pressure.

Lance will leave when he wants to. However, I think Lance is a solid driver. He is definitely fast enough and puts some good performances. He just negates all that work by making rookie mistakes. If he works on that, then I wouldn't be surprised if he finishes just 1 or 2 places behind Alonso.
Iono Alonso has a specialty of driving past the limit of a shitbox, but we’ll see
thing is as well, Aston is still in its recovery, I reckon as long as Lance can grow as the team grows he'll do great stuff, I find it weird how people say he's not that good when he held up pretty well against Vettel, plus when he was up against sergio, he was still new to the team whilst sergio was their home boy for many years, and he still got podiums and a pole in 2020.
also its easy to say it was the third best car in 2020 but Mercedes was 1-2 seconds faster the entire season than the 2nd fastest team so there wasnt loads of opportunities for them (Monza, and Sakhir the exceptions)
I think Lance will be moved to WEC when the factory is complete or when Aston becomes competitive enough that having Lance driving becomes a dead end, unless he can prove that he can be a good №2 which thus far, he hasn't.

His biggest advantage and disadvantage at the same time was his father buying the team he was in. It removed the pressure of a seat fight. Without that he lacks the incentive to get better than he is right now.
The problem lies in the very beginning of Lance's F1 career. Dad bought an $80 million seat at Williams and "rushed" his son into F1. Lance needed more time in F2 to build up his race-craft....but that didn't happen.....hence is why is where we are at with Lance Stroll.
Even niki lauda, a rich kid back in the day had to take a loan to get started in F1, you can't have your dad buy your way into this shit and expect to win people with more determination.

Quite frankly, if Lance became available to sign tomorrow .. what teams would be racing to sign him? No one.
He’s very good at squeezing points out of bad cars, despite his super inconsistent qualifying and he’s a very good wheel to wheel racer despite his dumb mistakes sometimes. A team like haas or Williams would be dumb not to sign him if he was available
I would bet my house that last year he would’ve score more points than Albon on the williams
I paid close attention to his races last year, with a bit more luck he would’ve score almost double the points he had. His average finishing position was decent just behind vettel who also did very well.
But Alonso is a different beast right now. It’s time to step up or at least keep up and if not step aside.
Only the fear of getting fired can make you improve and he lacks that obviously

Lance and Seb had like the closest qualifying delta average out of all the teams, and in race pace was also essentially the same. I think this view of stroll you've shown is incredibly surface level in my opinion. I'm hoping Lance can carry on from Bahrain and show that whilst he's no world champion, he's certainly capable of the success of Checo and Sainz. Especially considering how young he is.

Albon is a better driver, but I really don't think Stroll is very lacking at all. He's probably the 3rd or 4th best #2 on the grid.
Having your dad hang out with you doing things you like and not only pour money in but also his time to develop the team into a race winning team, it’s one of those really heart-warming father son journey.
BUT, I think Lawrence knows deep down that he needs to light a fire under Lance. Not to justify his investment but to get Lance to his full potential. Sadly that probably means he’ll have to stop protecting Lance’s place in the team and get him hungry and desperate. Probably one of the hardest thing for him to do as a father but I also have a feeling that Alonso could light that fire.

I think the reason Lance hasn't progressed is because he knows he's never losing that seat. The best thing Lawrence could do for his son is to tell him he's out next year if he doesn't come close to Alonso.
I bet you'd finally see Lance make some progress. Like you said, he's not Latifi bad, but he's never had a reason to get better. Especially when other young drivers like Russell, Leclerc, and Norris have come in and gotten better and better every season.
I'm not a fan of either Stroll, but in F1, if you're not performing and achieving results, you're out.

This year should show how good Lance really is. As much as I like Seb, we all know he went to Aston after a dreadful year in Ferrari, so we do not actually know how strong Seb was at that point, but we do know that Alonso is close to his peak level.
Seb was good enough to beat Lance.

Ocon beat Pérez both in qualifying and race in 2018 despite scoring less points.
He was also very close to Ricciardo by the end of 2020 in a car that didn't suited him.
Alonso isn't in his Prime anymore, but he's certainly not overrated in terms of driving skills, seasons such as 2012 proves it!

His race-craft was next level in a car that was a midfield force in some races.
As for Pérez, i agree he's not top notch, but still comfortably beat Lance despite being disadvantaged, while Ocon as a rookie immediately matched him in all areas.
You should take a look at the datas in 2020, Ocon drastically closed the gap with a car that didn't suit his driving style.

At least yesterday he managed it very good. You could argue that p6 vs Alonso's P3 is bad, but he missed all of testing and was still under visible pain. This weekend was maybe the best performance of him we have seen so far

Even as an Alonso fan, I can never take this team seriously while they continue to give the bosses kid an unlimited contract. Lance has no incentive to improve or change his ways because he can never lose his seat. Never mind that they forgot to install a personality in him.

I think 2020 Lance Stroll had a glimpse he was developing as a driver. Look at the start of that year. However the crash at the Tuscan grand Prix stunted that along with him getting covid that year. He's never been able to find that form since
I really hope he finds that in him again, he was p4 in the championship at one point. If he didnt bottle the monza restart or get damage in istanbul he would of had two great chances at a victory

He's mediocre, beaten comfortably by all his teammates with silly mistakes yet still somehow in the sport!

I think you hit the nail on the head at 5:15 when you said "He hasn't shown he can raise his game [...] when the pressure gets higher."
That's the problem. For Lance, the pressure DOESN'T get higher. Every driver on the grid, even the best ones to a lesser extent, know that if they stop delivering the level that's expected of them, sooner or later, they'll be let go for someone else. That's not the case for Lance. Almost whatever he does, he'll have a seat. He doesn't need to perform, he doesn't have that's extra pressure that every other driver has.
If it just rains all year he’ll do very well.
At some point Lawrence will need to answer to shareholders. I completely understand wanting to help your son but at some point he needs to understand that his Lance is not cut out for the sport.
Nah, I would say Lance is good enough for now. He usually matched Seb's pace and sometimes even faster than Seb, and I said this as a huge Seb fan. He's so underrated in my opinion. He's definitely good enough for a midfield team like AM for me 😊
The fact that there hasn't been any substantial growth from Lance as a driver is probably the most searing point. It's starts to become a shame for those exciting F2 prospects.
They’ve let having Lance cost them Ocon (which may have been for the best given how he got on with Perez) and Perez. The crew at Aston Martin where so happy for Vettel and Perez at Baku 2021, I think that had Perez not gone to Redbull there’d be a lot of unrest in the team for having dropped him.
They should drop Lance just to show they’re serious, even if he isn’t actually being a hindrance, but I can’t see them ever winning with Lance there.
It’s not an environment Lance can really grow in, you shouldn’t live in fear but you do need pressure

At this point I’m not sure if anything can help, because let’s say hypothetically he does beat Alonso this season, no matter how fair it was, people will always question of his dad’s involvement had to do with it, such as preferential treatment, but not only that, most other people (especially Alonso fans) wouldn’t believe it, blaming it on something like bad luck or strategy, as no one would be able to accept or comprehend that as a thought, almost as it being impossible
Then again Alonso fans claim favouritism or conspiracy against Alonso whenever Alonso doesn't get his way, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me.

This is true and i always said Alonso was also responsible for the downfall of his career!
However, it's true that last year, he seemed genuinely sabotaged by his team, the amount of points he lost compared to his teammate was quite frankly ridiculous, especially given the situation.
It's all coming true. This year is perfect to see what he's made of.

Yeah I don't dislike Lance, and no disrespect, like you said he's a solid midfield driver, but sometimes I do just forget he's there.. Hopefully he does somehow up his game. There are those drivers who spend much of their early careers being mediocre but find the speed in experience and maturity.
For Lance, and for Aston Martin, this year is really everything. If they really want to be challenging for the title within the next few years, now is the year to push on. More top 10 finishes, frequent Q3 appearances and breaking the top 3 teams' stranglehold on the podium need to be top of the Aston Martin targets. I can see Fernando Alonso doing that, but Lance I'm not so sure about.
I predict that Alonso will put a Lando sized beat down on Lance in terms of point scores and qualification record. It will be even more obvious than it already was, that Lance is not a driver to take the AM car to the next level. Will Stroll Sr find a way to gracefully move Lance to WEC or something, and bring in a better driver to pair with Alonso for 2024 and beyond? Maybe they could get Albon from Williams at that point. Really, Lance himself doesn't look super enthused about being in F1 right now. By all reports, a nice young man. He could decide to leave himself if Alonso boat races him this season.
as much as he makes rookie mistakes, you cant deny that when he is in the zone, he shows serious pace, like in 2017 he managed to get 3rd in Baku, pretty much only missing out on 2nd just to the line, and the pole in Turkey and the many other podiums he had/good races in general. of course he may not be a lando norris, George russell or Charles Leclerc, but he has proven compared to other drivers that previously raced that he does actually deserve a seat in F1
The way he races you'd think they call him Lance "Going for a" Stroll.
Lance is a good midfield driver. Whether he can be more than that is an unknown, since we haven't seen him in a top car since junior formulas, of which he won three. So, based on that, I'd like to imagine Lance can step it up and be a good enough number 2 driver if Aston Martin become a top team. Maybe what Perez and Webber have been for Red Bull. But this is obviously the best case scenario for Lance (probably not even the most likely one), cuz I can't realistically see him get any higher than that though.
He makes some crazy mistakes a few times per year, but other than that I feel like he gets too much hate than he deserves for his performances. Tbf, he was getting a lot more hate before 2020, so where he stands right now with the fans seems great in comparison. I guess people have somewhat accepted him since 2020 because: 1) Latifi and Mazepin have reminded people what a bad pay driver actually is; 2) he's kept himself out of the bottom 3 drivers in each of the last 3 seasons, which is probably the bare minimum to not be perceived as a bad undeserving F1 driver.
He's hated because he's still there despite 7 years of mediocrity!

I can see Aston going in 2 directions. Either an f1 team trying to win and be at the top. Or they are simply just in it for the money I hope they give more young drivers a shot

Exactly what I'm thinking about the current situation at Aston Martin.
However, I don't really see Lance proving anyone wrong anymore. At least in F1 that is. I think it is like you said: He is decent enough to be in Formula 1 but nothing special inside the F1 paddock itself. Possibly the 2023 season will be a proper make or brake one for him. If they have a good enough car to keep up with McLaren and Alpine for the entire year, Aston cannot afford to effectively have a 'one driver team' much like McLaren last year.
I'm also on the same page with Josh Revell on Lance's case: He could really be a better fit for WEC or IMSA than for F1.
Ironically if Aston Martin becomes competitive his time is more likely to be done, in a team in the back half of the mid field he will never look much different to his team mate, if the car becomes front line and someone like Alonso is next to him he will look bad. Perez showed that in the pink merc.

Yep, the real answer here... There's no incentive for him to push and train.
Family matters can make things very messy in any business and F1 is certainly no exception. Take the Schumacher Brothers' fiasco in Spa '98 for example. Michael was pissed that Ralf was denied a first victory from Eddie's team orders so Michael bought Ralf out of his Jordan contract, when the very next year Jordan were in serious running for the title.
Imagine the internal politics of Ferrari if _both_ Schumachers drove for Ferrari in the 2000's.

At what point do we say that nepotism in the sport is a problem? On one end, it’s great that papa stroll gave his son a seat and literally bought an F1 team. But on the other end, what exactly is lance strolls goal? I’ve never heard him say “yea we’re gonna fight hard and one day I’m gonna challenge for a WDC”. Stroll is good on his day, but 80% of the time he’s just taking up space or causing collisions basically latifi 2.0

Although he'll never admit it, but the Strolls presence is nothing short of nepotism. Although Lance Stroll has his moments, like a podium for Williams in Baku 2017 and a pole position at Turkey in 2020, is he consistent enough to challenge regularly? I'm not saying he's a bad driver, but I don't get the sense that he's consistent enough to stay in F1. Other drivers have been edged out with better consistency than he has, but due to his father Lawrence paying the bills, he is not challenged as such
In business it is good practice to avoid selling or renting to your family. You have to compromise, give big discounts, free service, and if things go bad it becomes very personal. You need that bit of disconnect to keep the business transaction as business.
If Aston is going to aim at winning Championship they will need Championship level drivers, and also the ability to dump drivers that aren't good enough. Hiring family keeps one hand tied behind their back.

If Aston Martin wants to be a championship contender they need to attract young talented driver rather than old soon to be retire drivers, and fire Lance Stroll
So they do have a reserve drive but also if they want They can invest into young drivers Fernando looking after in his A14 management. Maybe
It still might be a couple seasons before Aston is fighting at the top. Give Lance a few more years to improve, but if he doesn't raise his level then replace him with a more experienced driver that can take them to the top.
Agree with everything in this video. Lance has never needed to fight for a seat and thus never felt the fear of potentially losing a seat. Maybe he is too relaxed ´cos he knows he has the seat. Lance is not developing himself because there isn´t an absolute must to do so.

tbf on him, he's stepped up his game this season in my opinion. He's managed to get decent results, considering he's driving with a healing broken wrist. But that also shows how good the car is too, so it's hard to say (I may have contradicted myself). But honestly would be good to see him improve and become better because who doesn't like an underdog that proves his worth?

The issue Lawrence has to face is he can’t just sack his son. (He can but I don’t think any father would want to fire their own son) so he instead is getting the team to the best it can be so either 1. Aston ends up starting a dynasty like Merc did so the car is so good you don’t have to even worry about Lance holding up the team or 2. He just waits for Lance to leave or retire and then they can fight.
Took years for Dick Johnson to take his son out of his race seat in the Aussie V8 championship. But they had financial stress and new partners waiting in the wings(inc Roger Penske), so Dick had to show that he was serious about taking the next step. Only Lawrence and rest of AM management know what their long term plan is and how young Stroll fits into that.

People don’t mention Lance finishing 11th in 2020 in the 3rd best car enough. That is pretty unforgivable.

For sure Stroll's Prema tax definitely helped his junior series rise. But he's improved each season. He's still bang average but can surprise in a good or bad way. If he gets better in qualifying he could be a decent no.2

Wouldn't surprise me before long if he sells up. Are they getting closer? Sure but the fact there has been rumors for a while that it maybe sold. I recon in 2027 depending on where the 2026 car is

I really think Lawrence needs to employ some tough love and sned Lance to finishing school - namely a lesser team to learn and improve - especially if Aston want to be a championship team. He's just not consistent enough to back up a Fernando or other superior driver if they are ever in a championship fighting season.
It might be that with a guaranteed seat Lance isn't pushed to perform like other drivers.
Maybe if Lawrence told his son that he is no longer guaranteed a seat we would see a resurgence in form.
The Strolls are a big force in Aston Martin but if Lance being in a seat becomes counterproductive they'll be forced out if Lawrence doesn't make the call beforehand.

Lance is good enough to be in F1. He was very very competitive in the early part of 2020 when given a good car. Beating perez in the same car until mugello and was 4th in the wdc after Lewis, Bottas and Max. That was until his huge mugello crash (tyre failure) and then a string of dnfs and covid. And most of these were out of his control.
He's more or less on similar pace as vettel in most races. Sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. Lance has had all veterans as teammates. Massa, perez and vettel. The only time he had a newbie (sirotkin), Lance beat him.
He's one of those who can't do amazingly with a bad car but can really be very quick and exploit his potentially when given a strong car (2020).
I think what he does need to improve is his racing awareness and use of mirrors. Otherwise he makes few driving errors or unfair overtakes or rash driving.
He has also improved at driving mediocre cars. His tyre management and overall race management and race pace have improved as well. I think he will get even better while being alongside alonso and if they are given a good car.
Pérez was marginally better in early 2020, he was just behind because of some bad luck and also due to him receiving evolutions after Lance!
Lawrence can't fire Lance but he can keep hiring former WDCs to destroy him on track until he decides to quit on his own

I believe he has the seat until the car is championship level and he fails to perform to the car. At that point its up to his dad or management. But I think he deserves his seat for at least 2 more seasons cause then it's the year 5

I think even Stroll's biggest fans will doubt Lance can ever match Max, Lewis or Charles, even if he gets the best car. Lance's only shot at a championship is if AM build the best car and sabotage whoever his teammate is. Even then I would expect Lance to lose the championship unless his car is a second a lap faster than anyone elses. He's good but he's not good ENOUGH. He's certainly not amongst even the top 10 most talented drivers in the sport. Maybe not even the top 15.
