  • A Patek Philippe coin watch is a rare luxury we don't often see. In this video, John explains how these micro-marvels are made and demonstrates a couple of CZcams firsts. John presents three of the earliest coin watch references 801, 802 and 803 -- a selection of coin watches that we have not seen together before at Collectability. To demonstrate the extraordinary micro-engineering of these tiny masterpieces, John measures the knife-edge thickness of the engraved gold back of the movement inside one of the coin watches -- a staggering 0.4 mm thick. We believe this demonstration is another CZcams first and a great example of the genius of Patek Philippe's watch and case makers from as early as the 1920s when coin watches first appeared.
The ref. 801 is the smallest and rarest of the known Patek Philippe coin watches and was made using a $10 USA gold coin. John shares the delightful story of how on Christmas Day, 2006 Philippe Stern passed a ref. 801 coin watch to his son Thierry as a symbolic gesture that the presidency of Patek Philippe was now under his care. The ref. 802 series shown in the video was made from a $20 USA gold coin. Also made from a $20 USA gold coin, the example of a ref. 803 was purchased by a coin collector because of its' pristine condition -- imagine the owner's surprise when years later he spotted the tiny button on the edge of the coin and popped it open to discover inside a Patek Philippe watch with a Tiffany & Co. signature! This is what makes Patek Philippe treasure hunting so exciting -- you never know what you might find.

I wonder how many are in coin collectors' possession but they just don't know what's inside! The thought is painful! What an amazing story you provided about this circumstance. Thank you for sharing these amazing pieces John!

Excellent episode, John. Could you please do one on rare handcrafts? I’m particularly interested in the cloisonne enamel world time watches since recently picking up 5131J-014 myself. Thank you!

Absolutely fabulous, thanks for sharing. Modern watches can seem a little prosaic in comparison!

I found an 802 in my fathers collection of things at first though it was a great coin. I gave it to my son he had it for awhile dropped it in the table by mistake and it popped open took it to a Patek dealer who confirmed what it was and my son still has it to this day

Monumental achievement having those 3 amazing pieces! It's so true the fun is in the hunt. I wonder if the actual weight is different and I imagine it should be lower for the watch coins due to the density of the materials EZ way for coin collectors to see if they have any watches.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure John mentioned that when they were making these incredible pieces how they made sure the weight was the same as an unaltered coin specifically for the purpose of what you were just speaking of.

I was just thinking about these, I was watching something on the recent 1.8mm thick Bvlgari and it reminded me of a coin watch Brian Govberg was showing off way back when. Incredible engineering, and they always intrigued me especially since my first hobby was coin collecting and all things numismatic.
