  • Think of Patek Philippe and you think of watches like the Nautilus, the Calatrava and the perpetual calendar chronograph.
    But did you know that the Golden Ellipse is the second oldest watch in the Patek Philippe collection after the Calatrava in 1932? Did you know that Patek make magic happen and created a full 18k blue dial for the Ellipse collection? And what’s the story behind the weird, round little marks, surrounding the "Swiss" on the bottom of the dial?
    In todays video we will answer these and other questions and show you that the perfect circle is an ellipse.

    The Ellipse…a thing of beauty. A fabulously old fashioned watch for the jet set; when flying was a luxury and not just vulgar public transport. No one needs an Ellipse; but we would all love one.

    Vintage ellipses will soon become the most desirable PP watches. Trust me, the fashion comes in circles & smaller watches are getting hotter and hotter.

    If it were not for the label and reputation, this would come across as a nice, understated watch - but not extraordinary. While Patek has undoubtedly come up with beautiful watches, it has produced its fair share of boring ones too. I'm thinking of the entry-level Calatrava watches, for example. Just too damn conservative. I find that where classical styles are concerned, Breguet, F.P. Journe, and Lange offer more consistently interesting alternatives. One reason is that they often incorporate modern, innovative elements, while retaining some of the classical symmetry.

      Not necessarily. I have a 40 year old Patek now worth 3x what I paid. I had a Rolex Sea Dweller I wore daily for 25 years, which sold at Sotheby’s for 10x what I paid. Patek is a much better watch than Rolex, but in general Rolex has the best “brand equity”. Not every watch collector is aware of Patek. ALL watch collectors are aware of Rolex. The Rolex collector base is huge.

    I know Patek dabbled in quartz, with the ellipse to be a result.

    • @ericfreutel8240
      @ericfreutel8240 Před rokem

      Actually Patek didn’t “dabble” in quartz. Patek was a very early pioneer in quartz development, dating back to the 1950’s. Additionally, most ellipse models are mechanical, not quartz. Your comment is a true non sequitur.
