- In this instructional video I guide you step-by-step how to replace a leaking oil pan gasket on a 2009 Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited with the 3.8L engine. A common problem for oil leaks, this is a fairly straightforward replacement for any Jeep.
If your Jeep is dripping oil to ground, a common culprit is the oil pan gasket. This inexpensive part is relatively easy to replace. So if you're seeing an oil leak on the oil pan or the front of the transmission, you may need to replace the oil pan gasket on your Jeep.

Thanks! Will be doing this soon and cleared up some things for me.
It’s pretty straightforward. Feel free to reach out with any questions. Thanks for watching!
Great video, about to do the same to my 2010 JK. Grateful for my 3.5” lift and 35’s, makes getting under there a lot easier (don’t have a pneumatic jack and stands).
Glad it helped! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Yes, the lift and tires definitely give you some much needed elbow room.
Great Video
Thank you!
Yup deff a diff process for 2013 jeep jk
Yeah, different engine after 2012. Thanks for watching!
@@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors ur welcome and thanks!
Hello I have a question, where is the good oring and what type of silicone is used thanks
I'm not sure I completely understand your question. The o-ring is meant for the oil pick up tube. You can simply use some clean oil to lubricate the ring if you choose to install it. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
How did you know this wasn't a rear main seal leak? I also have oil dripping from the dust cover on the trans/motor but some people were suggesting thats indicative of the rear main
Honestly, I was thinking mine was the rear main at first. I started by cleaning/degreasing the pan and monitored the leaks for a couple hundred miles. I found it was coming from the rear and sides of the pan, so I knew the pan gasket needed to be replaced regardless. Once I changed the oil pan seal, it cleared up the leak, so it was a good place to start for me, without a ton of effort. I hope that helps!
@@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors It does. Thank you!
Hello, I am missing a few of the 15mm bolts for the transmission dust shield/oil shroud. There's a total of 7 like you said. 3 facing one way and 4 facing another. My question is, are they all the same size? I can't remember which I am missing. if not do you know what sizes they are? thanks in advance.
Yes, they are all the same size - 7 total. Here is a link with the size listed - www.moparpartsgiant.com/parts-list/2009-jeep-wrangler/manual_transmission/structural_collar.html
@@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
@@santyattwe No problem!
What would you say was your total time for the job? How much of that was cleaning?
Taking my time and filming, it took about 3 hours. It could easily be done in less than 2. Much of that time was cleaning. Feel free to reach out with any other questions. Thanks for watching!
can this method be used for a 2014 wrangler JK?
The basic principle is the same, but it's a completely different engine for the 2012 and up Jeeps, so the actual step-by-step would be different. I would search for an oil pan gasket change for the 3.6 Pentastar engine to ensure the right directions. Thanks for watching!
I just noticed my dust shield never sat flush with my transmission since I got it. The holes for the bolts line up but that's it. I did notice that the gasket had been cleaned before. Oh no. What if I've had the wrong cover this whole time. Does anyone know ?
It's strange that the bolts line up but it's not flush. Did you take it off and reinstall it to see if that made any difference?
@@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors Yes, I tried that. I'm going to compare the part number later to what All Data says it should be. Thank you for your reply. Happy 4th of July!
What about the gasket for the pick up tube?
I realized I hadn't filmed that part well after the video was published. It's an easy switch out - remove the single bolt holding the pickup tube, slide off the old oring, slide on the new one (with some oil for lubrication), and re-bolt-on the tube.
Thank you 😭Finally
I'm glad it helps! Thanks for watching!
Does the lower pan need a gasket?
No gasket, just RTV sealant. I did not change that out here, as I saw no indication of the lower pan leaking. It is still nice and dry on the pan after a few months. Thanks for watching!
Crap a half quart came out?
Yeah, there was a decent amount still in there. If I had raised the front end some when draining the oil, it would have been less.
Doing UPPER oil pan, thought lower.
The upper pan is typically the culprit with leaks, and in my case, it definitely needed the attention. The lower pan is really straightforward, and could easily be done along with the upper, or on its own, using the same process. For mine, it was a "if not broke, don't fix it" scenario. Thanks for watching!
