  • DIY Roof rack I made for my Honda Element. I used Kee Klamp and 3/4 inch pipes (same size as Yakima bars) and some marine dock hardware for the tower. The roof rack is easily removable, very solid and looks good. A lot of customization is possible using Kee Klamp attachments.
    Materials for this project
    3/4 inch black pipe (galvanized would work too)
    3/4 inch Kee Klamp attachments
    Marine dock hardware for the tower (galvanized)
    Bolts and washer

    What a great idea, I built this rack to haul my rowing skiff and it works great. I made two minor changes. I extended it to 5 feet because the boat is long (17 feet). Instead of painting the cross bars, I threaded them through kid's pool noodles. They provide padding for the boat and work like a trailer roller. Thanks for posting this.

    Nice build and great video editing. What I love about your videos is that you use tools that most DIYers would have on hand. I can't stand CZcams videos that are meant to show "cheap" hacks, and then the guy does all the work in a shop full of thousands of dollars of high-end tools -- drill presses, table saws, planers, etc. If I had the money to buy all those tools, I'd just go drop $400 on a OEM rack.

      That's exactly why those guys bought their tools; however, when someone is looking for "Cheap DIY" online it's because they need something cheap that was built with basic tools most garages should have on hand. It's no longer a DIY when someone needs a commercial shop worth of tools to get the job done right.

    • @c0pyimitati0n
      @c0pyimitati0n Před 6 lety +1

      This doesn't say "cheap diy" though... I understand where you're coming from, because many times i've looked to build something and they ended up using a lathe or some wild tool i didn't own.. But i just adapted the video to my own skill level/tools. Honestly those kind of videos are why i now own a circular saw, table saw, router.. I've slowly been growing my tools over the past 10 years.

    • @justinspires9151
      @justinspires9151 Před 6 lety

      It was meant as more of a generalization for the guys that do say "cheap ___ DIY" and then build it in a shop. I'm a master tech & engineering undergrad and I have tens of thousands (used to be over 200k when I had my shop) worth of tools and equipment including welders, benders, 3D printers, drafting software, diagnostic equipment, etc... When a friend asks me for a cheap DIY option for his project, I suit my answer to the kinds of tools I expect them to have. Hopefully they will, as you have done, collect the necessary tools over the years that they'll need to finish better and better projects.

    This is a great concept, I think if you used 3/4 electrical conduit you could lengthen the rack to accommodate a full roof rack, and use industrial strength suction cups similar to cups used to lift glass doors to attach to the parts directly on the roof for support. Or possibly body dent pulling cups. And you could bend and contour the pipe with a angle bending tool. And if you were to rivet them together and coat them with the bed liner spray it would be damn near a solid one piece rack.

    Hi, nice video that focus on the important details, rare to see.
    Some questions, if ever you have time:
    - I would like to adapt that on my 4runner to have a RTT and perhaps some solar panel there. Would these bars handle the weight? Do you have any idea on how much they can support?
    - you mentionned canadian dollars somewhere in a comment, are you from Canada?
    - is it shaking a bit knowing that there is no welding between the fat thing and the round one?
    Thank you and will go look to your other videos ;-)

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for your comment, the bars are very closed in weight and dimension to the Yakima round roof bars (only the vinyl coating is missing). Most probably similar weight capacity (165 lbs dynamic load). Altought i did not do a load test on my roof rack, i used it for a Yakima roof pod with miscelleneous gear in it (usually less than 100 lbs).
      I made the fitting really tight, so no shaking, a little bit of wind whistling when the rack is on without the roof pod. its removeable, so not really a big deal.

Its easy to removed the plastic trims from the roof, (check out this video: czcams.com/video/Iyhys9nB9PQ/video.html ) The only problem is the clips that holds the trims in place breaks easily during removal and needs to be replaced. Once the roof trims removed, it should be easy to fix the seems with the proper automotive caulking.

    Hi, just saw this posting. I have a Honda Element that I've modified for camping and am trying to figure out a simple rack, primarily to haul a canoe or hang an awning from...and this looks like a perfect solution. If I can ask a quick question...after looking at videos of Honda factory rack installations, they insert a small rubber strip (that goes in before the base/footing, which screws in), which I assumed was for water protection, but may actually be for for other purpose? However, since I know little to nothing about rack installations, do you have any thoughts or have you had any issues? Thank you for sharing! At 0:37, 1:31: What are you using in your angle grinder to cut---in my location, I only find grinding discs, no cutting discs/blades? Thanks

      I buy them in pack of 12, they are label has "metal cut off wheels" 4 1/2 X 3/32. Check Home Depot, Harbour Freight....they are very common and cheap

      It is a grinding disc. But its only 3/32 thick. your local home depot or lowes will have it.

      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 6 lety

      You can for sure, although you may get better value for your money in a store that sells welding materials. Look for round or square tubing with a thick sidewall.

      Sorry...I thought you were commenting on my other roof rack video. from home depot, you can buy the piping (plumbing) and most of the hardware. Kee Klamps are available online

      I used stainless steel hex bolts M6 1.0x16. the Honda Element roof in that video is prethread for that size bolt.
      Here is link that explain how metric bolts sizing/marking:

    Step one - check if your vehicle is roof rack ready
    well that's the end of the video for me. The problem with newer cars is a lot have the new curvy rails that make it difficult to install anything other than expensive third party bars or flimsy OEM ones with low weight ratings.

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  Před 6 lety +1

      Its easy to install roof rack towers on any vehicle. The question is, are you willing to drill holes on the roof of a newer car?
