    As a intermediate windsurfer, in-situ explained tips are quite helpful. Thanks for your effort. Frankly speaking, this channel deserves much more attention from windsurf lovers. For upcoming videos, I would like to see tips to avoid any accidents. While getting faster, catapulting, hitting head to mast, falling bacward while in harness with rig on you or any other situation would be more harmfull. A comprehensive video might prevent us being hurt and makes people more cautious.

      Thanks for the nice comment Pepe. I’ve only had this channel going for a few weeks now- feel free to share about and give it some attention! 😜
      I’m on the process of the kind of video you mention- key tip though- head upwind! That saves any sort of catapult, push the toes to bear away for power- but remember “bear away” doesn’t mean go downwind- just further away for the wind to the upwind position you’re currently at. To power up and get to the board planing you do not have to go down the wind, you only have to bear away a little! I hope the difference between those two commonly confused terms makes sense - watch for a new video about power control that will explain this in the upcoming weeks

      You are encouraging me to try the straps! Am 71, been w-surfing since 18 on and off around the world and still hate using them as with the slightest change of winds, they guarantee that I will be thrown off the board. I am very average at it mind you; I also sail Hobiecats/cats. I want to learn to levitate with the wing but cannot get an opportunity. Perhaps I might try going to Lemnos next year.... its a thought at this point... 2 yrs after u wrote this...

    One of the best videos I've watched to far to try and improve. So much better than a dry simulator! So many different degrees of freedom on a board and its difficult to always find which part of the body, board, sail set-up it causing you to not speed-up when all the other are planing by.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Fault analysis can be hard. Get onto some coaching clinics where possible. One things the instructor will introduce you to very early on with intermediate/advanced lessons in the fast forward formula, the 5 elements of windsurfing. Here's an intro I did on it, have a thing about these white you're learning anything new.
      Eg, I dropped off the plane whilst going for the foot straps... where was my vision. ah- at my feet- eye up and look forward to the direction where you are aiming to go.

    So I finally learned this (essentially just put my feet in one at a time and compensated for balance with the other foot, then pushed it down in the strap)! You do need crazy power in the sail bordering being over-riggered for the board to be stable enough to make the initial mistakes. Later I (we) learned how to do it at lower speeds as well. Now I just struggle with my Fanatic Jag being hard to control at high speeds through choppy seas and gusty winds 😅

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety

      Hope it helps!
      Remember- you don't have to go down wind to get in the straps and get going. The term "bear away" simply means to sail a little further away from the wind than your current position. For getting into the straps start up wind, close to the wind. "Bear away" by dropping low and pushing through your front toes to speed up and get in the front strap... this move might only take you sillily off the wind, or eve just across it- but not downwind.
      The use the heel pressure to head back up, rake the rig back (even de-power slightly by pulling a little with you front hand) to then get into the back strap!
      Good luck!

    For some reason getting into the back strap is for me harder than getting into the front one. By the time I'm ready to get into the back strap I'm fully blasting and in the choppy and gusty conditions we have on my spot I'm having difficulties in finding a "calm" moment when I can shift my weight from the back foot to facilitate the movement. Need more practice and I'll try pushing a ring a bit before going for it. It's perhaps a mental thing shifting the weight on the front foot while planning. Hey, great videos. Really appreciate! Don’t rush to get in the back one, get happily cruising around in the front on a getting up wind. Once your up wind nicely you’ll find it more natural to take the rig back, bring your body forward, then tease you back foot into the strap! 👍👍🤣

      @@Cookiesports Hi. I keep coming back to your videos and eagerly waiting for new ones. The back footstrap was a nightmare for me. Then I come back here and I literally pause-and-play through the video few times. I memorized the sequence of moves (legs, arms, head, body) and pre-visualized the moves before entering the water. And guess what - I'm fully in the straps now, greatly thanks to this and your other videos.
      Now I'm trying to master the "carve-tack" (czcams.com/video/lgtRtOAW0qc/video.html) and I find myself I can't get out of the back fotostrap :) I probably wait to long and the board stalls. Will get there :)

    Hi Cookie. This is one of the best tutorials I've seen online for getting into the straps and steering. Thanks for making the vid. What I would like to ask is what is the best way of slowing the board down and coming off the plane ready to tack (I'm not into planing carve gybes or carve tacks yet). When I get planing with both feet in the straps and fully accelerated, trying to slow the board down to reverse the process seems a bit haphazard. What is the best practice for this? Looking forward to seeing more of your vids when you have time to make them. Many thanks.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety

      Hi Marc,
      Thanks for the comment, really appreciate your positivity!
      So, slowing down and getting into a tack... firstly referent back to the "Elements of Windsurfing- Fast forward Formula" video i made a week or two ago (link below here).
      Use this formula to figure out a plan of attack....
      Vision...you want to head up wind and stop, then tack, so look upwind hard.
      Trim... aiming to get up wind so need heel edge pressure. Do you want to keep speed? If you front foot keeps the board flat and fast, or back foot pressure will slow you down and turn quickly.
      Counterbalance...as you steer into the wind and slow down the rig will be going back to your body must be going forward to counter this.
      Power... you want to slow down, but you also want some power to help get you further up wind- so keep the pulling down and back through the boom, and as you steer closer to the wind keep the sail in.
      Stance... a big moment like this you'll want a low stance for stability.
      You can use this formula to figure out most problems when windsurfing!
      Let me know how you get on!

    Thanks a lot Cookie, you did not spare any details for each step and this is really unique about your videos 🙏 here especially the counter balance tips are really useful to getting in the back foot strap. Do you have particular tips on staying in them without freaking out on high speed? 😅 How do we improve this without loosing balance?

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Duygu,
      Thank your your comment, much appreciated!
      Without freaking out... I think this answer will come in two parts...
      Part 1- get a lesson- or at least an encouraging friend.
      Dealing with issues in our heads (like freaking out at speed) are best dealt with with the support of others. Knowing someone is right there cheering you on, encouraging you to move your feet- that are likely glued on the board with little chance of moving- is a great support and will help keep it fun and less scary. It also can help as you know in your mind should you have a slip, they are there to help.
      Part 2- Go Upwind.
      Everyone seems to think that you must go downwind to get planing, and get in the straps. Start close to the wind and the decide how much speed/power you need to get up to a speed you are comfortable with. This may not even need to be turning across the wind but the whole process can be down close (ish) to the wind. To get upwind your VISION is the key- look where you want to go with you head, shoulders, hips and front foot, this will pull the board in that direction (I'm just working on a video that shows this key element a little more actually so stay tuned!)

      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Tom!
      Wind speed in here was mid 20's if I remember right. Foot straps lock you onto the boards and stabilise everything. It may make you a little fast, but the key bit is about control. Work on the front one only, no rush to get into the back one.

    Thank you for these videos, they are so helpful. I can really understand what you mean when the camera angle is this and you narrate while doing. I've got a question or a problem. I have a 122l Starboard Futura, can get planing and into the harness. But not yet into the footstraps. When I get planing while in the harness I tend to steer upwind, losing power. My front foot is in front of the strap, but I fear putting it in. Feels like my feet are so far back that the rig just leans too much back steering me upwind. Or then if I lean forward I get catapulted. Is my harness lines too far forward or too short (I have adjustable ones, now at 29")? I need to learn to get into the straps as my feet won't stick the board while going faster in some chop. I fear getting catapulted while in the harness and straps, snapping my legs off at my knees 😅

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety +4

      Glad you’re enjoying these videos!
      To get into the front strap you have to head slightly off the wind to accelerate and power up (not necessarily downwind - just a little bit further off the wind than the original up wind course). The rig has to come back in order to drive the power and accelerate. Consequently the board wants to turn into the wind. The job off your front foot kicking, driving & pushing is what stops the board turning hard into the wind and stopping.
      Problem quite likely (and most commonly) is that as you go back towards the foot straps you stand too heavily on your back foot which turns the board even quicker into the wind. Drive off the front foot give it a push or two, a kick or two then repeat as you step into the foot strap!

    Hi Cookie, I have troubles getting into the back strap: my feeling is that the moment I move my back foot I get into a catapult. it is a mental block I am sure and maybe the advice about setting the rig a bit back to counter balance can help. Do you have any other suggestion?
    Thank you very much, your videos are absolutely a must watch.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety +6

      Hi!
      Up wind! Look up wind, drive off the heels of both feet for a few seconds to get up wind. This will allow the rig to come back easily and you can the counterbalance this with your body moving forward. As your body moves forward you'll unweight your back foot allowing it to shuffle in.
      Chances are this will slow you down or even stall the board, so ready for a big push to return across the wind and speed up again as soon as you're in both straps.

And how to steer while planing (I’m doing something naturally which involves opening the sail a bit when going downwind, and closing it when going upwind, but AFAIKT it should be just steering the board, applying different angles on the fin).

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety

      Getting into the straps early (off the plane) can work when you know you're powered up, and you know how to kick the board off the wind. Stepping back/into the straps without power, or skill & awareness enough to push the board away will result in you stalling into the wind and falling in backwards.
      Sailing with only the back foot in the start is not recomended, far more likely to stall the board, and will need far more power to actually get going.

      HI!
      I think this was filmed in around 20 knots on a 5.7 sail.... to be honest you can't be too specific with sail size and wind speed- too many variable to consider. On any given day people can be out having a nice time on a huge range of sails- I may be on a 5.7m someone else on a 8.2, someone else on a 4.0m.
      As long as you have power in your sail you're ok. Aim to find someone on the beach you're heading too, similar skill and size, with a similar bard and then roughly match their sail size!

    • @Cookiesports

      Accidentally turning up into the wind, loosing speed and falling in backwards is common when learning to get faster and into the straps. It’s all down to counterbalance- as you work your way back on the board it try’s to turn to the wind, push the rig with your front and towards the wind to steer the board away, whist simultaneously pushing the through front foot- if you weight goes back, and the rig goes back you’ll turn to the wind and fall in backwards.

    At the 8:00 mark, back foot in the strap discussion...
    I'm very wary of catapulting when sailing with just my front foot in the strap. I find it extremely difficult to take my weight off the back foot so that it can be moved into its strap. In fact, I can only take the weight off for a fraction of a second. And then, I'm in such a rush to move the foot into its strap, that I often miss. Its the main reason I wear those dorky booties when sailing as I often slam my toes in to the front or rear of the strap where its screwed to the board.
    What I think I hear you say is, that to put the back foot in the strap, move the weight to the front foot and counter-balance by moving the rig back a little bit. Do you find that you could lift the back foot off the board in this position form several consecutive seconds so as to allow time for the back foot to find the strap?
    The other thing is that when I'm cruising with my front foot in and my back foot out of the straps, I find that my torso is well aft of my feet. That somehow, I got to shift my torso forward in order to weigh my front foot and take my weight off the back.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety +1

      Backfoot strap- rig goes back so your weight can come forwards. This will stop you catapulting (as you've turned upwind) and also unweight the backfoot allowing you to slip in backward and towards/into the back strap!
      Don't rush it, steer gently upwind and start to feel it unweighting!

    1. Enough wind for gliding (not enough: forget the straps)
    2. Your Foot joints (ankle) stabilize your Board.

    4. forward Foot joint only stabilizes the Board

    90% of the time I use rear strap first. See the gust, point downwind, place front foot near mast. Feel gust hit the sail and pull down/back on harness, push power through toes on front foot while lifting rear foot in strap to make board plane. This gets me planing VERY quickly vs the conventional method. It almost feels like you are on a swing and the board swings away from you and onto the top of the water to start planing. Once planing slide the front foot in and start working across to upwind. If a problem arises I never pull the rear foot out, always the front first. 90 cm wide RRD Firemove 140 may be the reason for this technique.

      Hi Zachary!
      Think of the harness hook as a pivot point… You can keep tension in the harness lines if you pull your front arm in, but the sail will open at the back- as a result the sail de-powers and you’ll likely head upwind.
      If you push your front arm away (as I’m saying to do so here), the sail will close at the back, sheeting-in, powering you up, stopping the board turning upwind and stalling- allowing you even to bear away a little and get into the straps. 👍👍👍

    On this huge board the footsteering doesn’t really have the impact on the board. In less wind closer to the planing threshold you wouldn’t be able to sail along so nimbly with only the front foot in, you’d eventually sink the tail. On the old narrow boards pretty impossible to sail along with one foot in the strap. Getting in the rear strap quickly is necessary to comfortably remain sheeted in and maintain the mast foot pressure in marginal planing conditions.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před rokem

      Sorry friend, but you’re wrong!…
      Foot-steering is important to learn and understand as you get back into the straps- otherwise students simply stand on the back foot and wonder why the board is turning upwind so quick.
      Sailing with one foot in is a good starting point to stop this happening and understand how to turn the board off the wind with the front foot pushing. Getting quickly into the back-strap will not help to begin with!
