Patience In Nuclear Black Family

  • This season of life for our family is one of disruption. We are blessed to be remodeling our house, but I would be lying to you all if I said that it has been ideal to relocate during the renovation with four children who are homeschooled plus a new puppy. In addition to renovations, there's also renegotiations going on. Yvette and I are having to find new ways to adjust to each of our children's behaviors and needs while still preserving the culture of our family. Sometimes that means taking a different approach to parenting, which requires a lot of patience from both of us and our children. Through it all, I feel as though God is telling us we need to be patient as we live through the lesson He is trying to give us.

      I understood him! 😄
I have a great nephew who has some speech issues. At 4 or 5, they visited, and we went to a car museum when it rained. He said he wanted to see the "jean". We couldn't understand him. So he took his index finger, moved it in a circle, and said, "zzzz".
It took us a few minutes to figure out that "zzz" was a bee, bees sting, he wanted to see the Stingray! Kid's smart, we were just slow that Saturday!

I never allowed the med therapy the school recommended ( said id pull him out if they required it. I also homeschooled as a single parent for several years )
physical and sensory activities helped him greatly. however, he was also in need of LD assistance, & once he received it, he was much more productive and no longer avoident.

It's refreshing how you parent your kids according to their personalities. This level of parenting requires a great deal of patience and introspectiveness. I love hearing Glen identifying his younger self in Uriah and finding efficient ways to keep him engaged academically. Also noticing how disciplining Uriah may affect Theo (trying to be perfect) is the epitome of parenting. Thank you so much for showing this side of parenting, and may you continue to be blessed 🤎

Truth be told, most parents feel like they don't know what to do, even when they have had good parents as models. I think that it's because all kids are different. What I love about Beleaf and his wife is that they have taken the time to learn each child's personality and work with them based on that. What I also like is that their videos show that sometimes they do get it wrong (as we all do). The important thing when you do is that you apologize to your kid and explain what happen and then you make it right. And more than anything else, what children need is loving discipline - like even when Beleaf had Uriah do squats, he's right there with him and his tone stays mellow the whole time, not angry. The most important thing, above all else, is that children need to be shown that you love them. The most significant and important job that a parent has is to raise their child. If you have love and can apply consistent discipline, you can learn how to do the rest. Blessings.

Aniah is the Uzi whisperer. Parenting takes a lot of patience. I’m glad that you stepped in when you saw that Yvette had reached her limit. I’ve been there before. I homeschooled my three kiddos for six years.

Awe, UZI sounds so good. Theo has the best smile. Uriah, I can relate. School work is sometimes boring, I work at a High School & sometimes I have to take notes for my students. I do a lap in the hall or outside for a mental break. Good wrestling with your Dad. Niah love the hairdo girl, You look very beautiful.

Extremely dope video. Growing up I was like Theo and my little brother was Uriah. Somehow, watching this is providing some form of healing for me. No need to be perfect, because greatness doesn't equal perfection. I wish I was told that as a kid, as irrational as that may sound

So so lovely. Thank you for sharing these moments with us. You didn’t mention it, but may be doing so already, let Theo know your hope for him. That is the hope you mentioned of him knowing he doesn’t need to be perfect, he is already loved, even while working hard. I find that kids know what they hear, everything else is up for their interpretation, regardless of what our actual intentions may be.
Also Anaya being able to interpret Uzi is just so precious. You and Yvette are doing great, Glen! Praying for more grace, strength, and provision in these season.

Sir Beleaf and your Queen, what an anecdote you are to all that's happening in the world today. This is what it is all about, the sacredness of family, the blessedness of routine (and patience), the joy, privilege, humour and work of childhood. I discovered you only this year but every time I watch, I am uplifted (how all of our spirits need to be lifted). Thank you.

You actually make the effort for each child in different ways too if necessary! You guys should do some type of parenting groups or something. All your hard work pays off your kids listen well and are so intelligent!! Oh and Aniyah I lovvve your hair mama you look so beautiful 😍🤗🤗

First off, your authenticity is so admirable, I love seeing your family grow. It reminds me of moments in my own life I rarely think about anymore since my kids are all grown. I am in my 50’s and was school aged in the 70’s. Having said that, in those times not much was known about learning disabilities and I had undiagnosed issues that I passed to my girls. Watching this series it really hit me that many of Uriah’s behaviors looked very much like the strategies we used to avoid tasks that were difficult because of our learning issues. What looked like misbehaving ie. lying, avoiding, not completing tasks (that I knew we were capable of and were age appropriate,) paying attention to what the person teaching you was expecting from you or their different limitations and using those to avoid performing a task we really weren’t able to do (without learning coping strategies) weRe spookily similar. Now of course, I’m not speaking something like this into your lives, but I bring it up because my own learning disability was undiagnosed, so when my kids acted out I thought that, like me, they were being naughty and manipulative ( as I had been told I was) I had ZERO idea that what I had been doing wasn’t misbehavior but finding a solution for a deficiency! I hope that Uriah is just misbehaving and these disciplinary measures are all he needs but I would highly recommend having a thorough series of diagnostic testing (preferably not a cursory testing although they are free when performed by public schools) done to make sure this isn’t an extremely smart kid figuring out how to cope with a learning disorder. Thanks again for your transparency! It’s rare and beautiful
