    Its quite extraordinary how USAAF and VVS pilots had such contrary views of this plane.
    Test pilot Cap. Lundquist said things like "The cockpit is small and cramped, and the instruments in general are awkwardly located ... and awkward to operate. The poorly coordinated controls are heavy weight condition contribute to the poor handling qualities of the airplane ... It stalls abruptly with little warning ... It is not suitable for its design purpose as a fighter due to its generally poor handling qualities and apparent lack of performance."
    My comparison, VVS pilot Nikolai Golodnikov said "I liked the Cobra ... the Q-5 was the best fighter I ever flew ... The cockpit was very comfortable, and visibility was outstanding. The instrument panel was very ergonomic ... it even had a relief tube."
    I don't know of any other plane about which the pilots of two air forces had such contradictory opinions. Perhaps its simply the case that US pilots were used to better-behaved aircraft with a high degree of build & design quality, whereas the Soviets were trained on twitchy and treacherous mules like the I-16 and LaGG-3, and were used to planes with antiquated & highly manual controls.

      +long5hot what i was read in an old book of aviation was, the american pilots dislike the p39 because of the center of gravity tends the plane to stall in an uncontrollable spin at low speeds. And also because the cockpit door doesn't open in high speeds. Making the plane a "air coffin"

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +2

      +Edroh De Nornal That's a good point about the doors. I don't think the russian pilots were worried about the spins, as they were used to that behaviour & well practiced at recovering from them, but yeah it wouldn't be pleasant trapped inside a burning plane with air pressure slamming the door shut.

      +long5hot that is the interesting part. The soviet lend leased p39 were examinated and revised. The soviets found that the p39 has a lot of useless or non dependent parts and that parts were removed. and the plane become more lighter. But is what you say, two different points of view. The americans tends to like airplanes that do a nose stall instead a tail stall. Also in those days, the american pilots were less diciplined than soviets pilots.

    I notice how you have increased the corner box comparisons this year and it is particularly useful for the comparison of the two P-39 variants. It looks like it is a lot of extra work to coordinate video in video, but I just wanted to say, the extra work is appreciated. It makes those subtle differences quite obvious.

      After spading my P-39, getting 6+ kills a game, flying this way, is not uncommon. Easiest is to do a low yo-yo run at a bomber and shred them from underneath with a few cannon snipe shots. Dive down low before their gunners zero in, pull up to WEP and finish the job. Rinse & repeat. Typically this happens up high and by the time their fighter help gets their, they are slow from the climb and become easy prey themselves.

  • @Vurdulak
    @Vurdulak Před 8 lety +2

    Great video as always! Thank you.
    The historical line is also very welcome. It is true that the western pilots never really been all that impressed by the P-39 (400). Though, their VVS (Soviet compadres) seemed to have flown these planes with some amazing success, not without some controversy related to VVS pilots exaggerating their kill numbers, "just a little bit". In fact, the two VVS pilots who were reportedly some of the most successful, allied aces of WW2 flew Airacobras (modified). While the two most successful US aces flew P-38's. However, if you exclude the kills that both VVS guys had while flying Yak-1's and Mig-3's, the numbers would probably be pretty equal to the US pilots that flew Lightnings.
    Oh and as a side note, you are the first to actually say "Fat_Duc", as in intended, as it is derived from "Ducati", not from "duck". LOL
    Standing by for the next one.

    looks like a fun plane, i was allready thinking about getting it as i love big guns.
    I remember that when i had just started war thunder, they were the only plane that truly terrified me.
    but now i have become a lot better (thank you for that, btw) and i noticed they are a lot less of them flying around.
    I thought maybe power creep had destroyed them and there for i put it off.
    But this video shows me that it is still extremely potent.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +harald s Yes I think they're rarer now due to the improvement in the P-47Ds, which are now way undertiered, and the introduction of the hispano P-51. Lots of players prefer to fly those in the 3-4 BR range, and above that they'll move straight to the P-63s which are still a common sight in Arcade battles.

    • @captainnyet9855
      @captainnyet9855 Před 8 lety

      +long5hot I wouldn't know, really, usually when I see an american single engine prop, I consider it a free kill, and I do so with impunity.
      american planes are only a threat when they are above me, and if you let them get there, you are doing something wrong.

    • @captainnyet9855
      @captainnyet9855 Před 8 lety +1

      +long5hot though I have to admit that it seems more due to the pilots then the actual planes, they are the most prone to falling for stall traps, for example.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +harald s Yep you've hit the nail on the head there. Many US planes can be absolutely dominant if flown well - the P-47 and P-51 certainly can. It just requires discipline to value speed over all else and never turnfight, and unfortunately that's too hard for the majority of arcade players.

    • @captainnyet9855
      @captainnyet9855 Před 8 lety

      +long5hot but I have noticed a strange trend of american pilots being generally terrible, even more than russian fighters pilots do they climb straight at you untill they stall an do they show not the slightest bit of situational awareness.
      I think this is because they lack experience in turn fighting, where developing such skills is a must.

  • @fly_swatter_
    @fly_swatter_ Před 8 lety

    the rudder wobble is very pronounced on the PlayStation platform & just as you said makes deflection shots while elevator turning a bit tricky. you do get somewhat used to it and can account, however you do miss the occasional "sure" kill.

  • @Thetepkai
    @Thetepkai Před 8 lety +1

    Good play to fly, cannon accuracy leaves much to be desired, especially in RB where accuracy is paramount (No lead indicators and in air reloads). But i have fun flying it and it is very satisfying sniping a plane with one 37mm shell but would only recommend for AB since it has very low cannon and relatively low MG ammo compared to other planes in it's tier.

  • @Pulmonox
    @Pulmonox Před 8 lety +1

    When I first started playing the game back in March of 2013, the Aircobras were a big deal. EVERYONE was using them. The allure of such a large cannon upon a small, nimble plane was apparently a draw for a lot of players and they filled the sky with loud thumps of cannon fire. I hadn't yet worked my way up the Tier chain to the Cobras (this was back when there were 20 tiers instead of 5 tiers and a battle rating) but I was certain that once I reached my first Cobra things were going to be different, and the sky would be filled with the burning remains of my unworthy foes.
    To quite the contrary, I hated them. I couldn't seem to land any hits when they were necessary (aside from a 1.5k snipe shot in a head-on with a Spitfire that stands out in my head even today. It must've been an AP round because it didn't explode as you demonstrate here). The plane was just too clumsy and unwieldy and I wasn't yet experienced enough to appreciate it's engine power and climb rate. I slogged through the Aircobras, spaded them out, and promptly moved on. It was the same with the King Cobras, though I was able to notice enough of a difference in performance, I just couldn't get a grasp of the plane, and so, once spaded, they were quickly shelved as I moved on.
    I wouldn't revisit them until the P-400 was released, and even then, I dreaded going back to the Cobra lines. However, in my return I found the P-400 to be quite a pleasure to fly. I found it effective and capable, not at all like the Cobras I remembered and loathed. It wasn't until later that I realized that it wasn't the plane that was better, but it was the fact that I was using it more properly. Between the point where I had discarded the Cobra and was given the P-400, I had learned the basics of energy fighting and what 'Boom and Zoom' meant. It wasn't that they plane was any better... I had simply figured out how to use them properly, and learned how to appreciate it's engine power and climb rate. This would be repeated with the P-47, which I wanted so badly to love, but just couldn't figure out how to use it initially, as it was far too sluggish. It's now one of my favorite planes to fly.
    I still don't care for the Cobras, but I'm not afraid to fly them anymore. They do bring bombers down quite nicely, though I think the P-400 is my favorite variant, as I just prefer the 20mm in the nose over the hulking 37mm, even in spite of the '400's overpowering rudder that will send you out of control that is currently implemented.
    Thanks for showing the differences between the Q and the N though. I always wondered if there was actually a difference between them or if they just had the same flight model. I was interested to find this not to be the case.
    Some beautiful flying here, and good demonstrations of what the plane can and cannot do. I loved the 'Grenade fired from a Blunderbuss' comparison. I find it very apt.
    I was disappointed in the TBD pilot at 10:50. While I found the bomber very fragile, I also found it incredibly maneuverable. Especially at low speeds. I don't know if ANY plane can out-turn that thing at

      There's a few aspects to overcoming that. First make sure your aim sensitivity isn't too high - if it is, your mouse will move too quickly and it'll be difficult to hold the reticle on target. Secondly, if you're playing Arcade, focus on the reticle and the lead indicator when aiming - try to ignore everything else. And lastly - get plenty of practice. You can create a custom battle and fly against a wide range of AI aircraft now, I highly recommend it. The more you shoot down, the better you'll get.

    • @captainnyet9855

      i think what the tempest needs is a stock survival guide, it is a beast once spaded and in no need of guides, as for the ki-84, i also fail to see how this needs a guide, as long as you use stealth belts those 20's will rip your enemies apart and it's good at both BnZ and turnfighting, just be sure you go vertical rather than horizontal as to conserve energy.
      It's essentially as close to the pre-1.55 cannonbusa as you can get, with slightly better speed, and somewhat worse agility and climb.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +Mob Barley Lets see ... Sapphire R9 270X Toxic. My graphics settings are custom - had to scale them back as the card was too fast for the lousy amd graphics driver resulting in blue screen of death crashes while playing WT, though that's gradually improving and I've been scaling them back up again.
      Its capable of running WT at movie settings while recording vid at 180fps, but I'm not brave enough to do that yet. Right now my textures are set to high, cloud quality is high, shadow quality low, AAA is off, Anisotropy is 8x, lens flares are off because I find them distracting ... reflections etc are on ... I think that's about it. Oh and I run VSynced at 60fps, which keeps the card cooler and I don't notice any lagging problems which I know can sometimes occur with Vsync.

    @long5hot do you ever think they will integrate the friendly fire mechanic that is in tank battles with aircraft? when you aim at a tank in tank battles that is on your team you get a blue x and the gun won't fire. I would like to see this for aircraft on AB. It happens and its easy to troll.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +lance Premus Hmm, well, it could only happen in planes if the friendly is right in front of you with a stable close-range shot. Some points:
    --Are you using the WIP client? I am, and the rudder wobble is basically nonexistent for me. I was surprised by the difficulty you had controlling the Cobras, as for me they've always been some of the sweetest-handling aircraft in the US tree. They're quirky thanks to the strange center of gravity, but completely predictable once you're used to them.
    --The Airacobras are among the very few aircraft that can be put into a stall spin in Arcade, thanks to that hyperactive rudder. It's a useful defensive trick if you know how and when to use it, and it completely baffles Arcade pilots since so few planes are capable of it.
    --The Airas don't hammerhead well, BUT if you pitch down at stall speed instead, they'll drop their noses VERY quickly and recover control in only a second or so.
    --Even without vertical targeting enabled, it feels like the cannon "lobs" shots slightly; at short range, I'll often find myself missing slightly high. This is most pronounced when attacking ground targets, but I've felt it against aircraft as well. It might be the recoil causing this, since it causes the plane to buck slightly.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +DMStraylight Yes I'm using WIP, and I was learning as I flew the planes (I only had time for 3 battles in total, which is all I've flown in WT in the past week) so with a bit more practice I'd probably learn to avoid situations that rock the plane around.
      I used to be able to stall-spin the Q very easily, but found it more stable this time around. The P-400 which used to be very stable is now the most spin-prone.
      And yes I think its the cannon bucking the nose up. Strange how that happens with even a single shot - I'd have thought the first shot would be where you aimed it and a 2nd shot would lob higher, but that's not how it works in WT.

    • @Vurdulak
      @Vurdulak Před 8 lety

      +D1098F I don't have it with other planes though...

    • @Vurdulak
      @Vurdulak Před 8 lety

      I don't have this wobble either.. Cobra should have some ridiculous rudder buffet, but in a spin only... One other thought, i turned the "instructor" off completely, not because am so good, but because the instructor was getting weird sometimes lowering landing gear and retarding or advancing power. Try killing the instructor if you haven't already, of course..

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

      +D1098F Yep instructor's off too, has been for years. Its not an issue with the mouse, its the plane over-reacting to mouse movements when in a banked turn and especially at high airspeeds, and extra-especially when firing as the recoil seems magnified. I didn't show the 3rd game I flew in the P-39s in this vid, because I was frustrated & deleted the footage before I thought better of it, but it was a Khalkhin Gol Domination in which I only managed 3 kills despite making about 10 passes through the furball - every time the jerking would prevent me getting guns on target. At low altitude the airspeed is higher of course, so it did seem to make the problem worse.
      For those who experience it, its just a matter of learning to recognize the situations under which its likely to occur and learn to avoid that kind of attack. The more stable the aim is when approaching the target, the less the chances of wobble.

      The F8F-1B is a superb plane, but at its tier it sees a huge amount of bomber spam, and 20mm no longer pose a significant threat to bombers. Its among a long list of high tier fighters that I don't bother flying anymore, not until/unless Gaijin makes improvements to the gameplay.

    The p39 and the p40 were before the 1,55 patch my favourite planes to fly in a br span up to 4,0,especially the a10 and the c5. But after the latest patch all the p versions got horribly nerfed.all flight models were changed after the 1,55 patch. The a10 is NOT the same airplane it used to be,engine got nerfed,drag increased so now you turn even slower,before the a10 was the only airplane i knew that could climb at a 30 degree angle at speeds lower than 250 kmh,it was by far the best ropeadope airplane outthere,now its just average at best.i liked how you got to choose between the a10 who had stronger engine,insane acc and top speed but slow in turn and the c5 who was the opposite,excellent turn fighter but that strong engine.Now after the patch they are virtually same airplanes except the a10 is 5 kmh faster. sounds like you have never flown the ki-43-III, but that plane also got hit with the nerf hammer, right up to the point where it is outclassed at everything by pretty much all same tier planes (climb, roll rate, turn rate and dive speed all got nerfed in one go)
      ii used to be capable of sustained climbs at over 50° with WEP, and around 40° without it.
