Rewatching the Journey journey again. John mentioned did we miss being in the garage. -. I sure do. Would love a basement tour/update video. Basic vid with no editing is fine.
wow its been 10 years??? john we miss you!
Great Video, John! I'm happy that your back in the garage and workin' on a game!
I love the heat and blow off method of solder removal! Time to buy a Hakko 808!!
I love this game. The fact that an actual Journey tape played when you were in the bonus round was AWESOME back in the day.
Yeah, that tape player was crazy talk.
I'm pretty sure it was the whole song looped on a tape.
I just bought a Tron cabinet. It's missing so much stuff :/ I'm really going to be pulling a lot of research from your videos and just wanted to thank you so much for your time. I've watched this full restore twice :)
Hey John..one project id love to see you rebuild or restore is Gauntlet
John you should preserve the button head man on the control panel somehow. Can't believe it was designed that way - hilarious.
Oh, that game's on a _set_ of PCBs!
I'm jealous John! That is a great game! Can't wait to see the final game.
Yeah, me too! Such a cool cab. Thanks!!!
I'm on a journey!
watching this again in 2019, good old times :D
Hey John I priced the wire crimping tool on Amazon and almost had a heart attack when I saw the price of $135. Wow man never let those go.
+Dennis Smith Jr. Look for them used on eBay. Yes , they are expensive!
a good tool is worth every penny. "you cant afford to buy cheap".
looking forward to more vids for this restore john, wow lots of parts to source you have done well so far, marque, and overlay reproduction should be easy.
its that tape player thing that will be hard!!
Yeah, it's a big project, for sure! I CAN DO IT!
the lines at tts right (but as rotated 90º the tube, uppper part of the tube), it is the VERTICAL stage, just change the capacitors and it will work fine. Now the horizontal reduction (as it is rotated 90º, it is the upper/lower part where the image is compressed), it is actually the "horizontal size" reducing, so it must be a the horizontal +B that has a cap dry.
Just picked up that same wire stripper at Radio Shack. Holy crap does that rock! It's so easy to use, it makes me wonder how I survived without it before. Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, it's stupid easy, right?? I can't not use it. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah, I hear ya! It's really fast and foolproof. I have a nice "regular" wire stripper that has the individual gauges and that still takes a century to strip wires compared to this gizmo. Crazy.
Awesome video
Utterly interesting! :)
Restoring this game will be a real JOURNEY!!!!
Go on John, I wanna see the game running with a HUGE amplifier blasting out the song of the final stage!
Nice watch. Color coordination is important for the thub ring fashion star like you. :)
Thanks, Scott! I'm very fashion forward in these vids. :)
Exciting dude. Love these restores. You always do it right.
Thanks!!!
Just stared watching this restore & I must say... you seem to work backwards ? LOL
I don't know about anyone else, but I would be stripping the cabinet of all its parts first, then repairing the cabinet so all you need to do is put the parts in.
Putting all the parts in then working on cab will just dirty everything ! I've noticed you've done this in a few other restores.
Get the hardest part done first, which is the cab, then do the fun stuff !!!
+PinMan Dan I like getting the game working first. Then do the cosmetics. The biggest challenge of the Journey restore was getting it working. I was missing everything.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
All good, I'm really enjoying watching this restore so far & I don't blame you for trying to get the game working as its the most exciting part ;-)
+PinMan Dan I really needed to overcome that hurdle first before committing myself to restoring a game that could potentially never work. :)
dropped the 5v regulator on the PCB. Probably due to the 30yr old caps on that thing I have had that a few times with slot machines over here.
Just got the PGA Tour Challenge working.... Now I get to listen to "EA Sports, It's in the game" every few seconds.... ya that attract mode will be disabled. Funny thing is, I'm getting suggestions for Journey everything now... LOL time to clear the cookies.
That PGA golf game is pretty cool. Do you like it?
Ya, all though I've only played a combined hour or so of Golden Tee, I am finding myself playing this PGA golf game a lot. Has good graphics and lots of features. I thought I would gut this cab up for parts, but now I think I'll keep it. All it really needed was a new stick of RAM (which I have buckets of) and the security dongle (must have been picked by the op).
The 4 carriage bolts on the front holds the metal that holds the coin box so those are stock...
Ah! Good to know!
looks like the bottom bracket was supposed to go under the sides. the corners are sticking out and looks like might have bent a little to put middle screw in.
You mean the bracket for the power supply? Yeah, I put it on totally wrong. :) I fixed it the other day and it will be addressed in the third video.
I'm finally watching this series, and... LOL, "or... penises"! Haha, that cracked me up, John! :-D
Can't believe you made that cable without us /shakes head disappointedly
Questions....:
how much is your electric bill?
where did you learn all your arcade knowledge?
how did you know that was a journey cabinet?
You should clean up that cab so you don't have an alergic sizure, that thing is filthy. Good job so far though.
Lol. Oh, I'll be cleaning it soon. Wanna get it working first!
1:07:15: The set of _game_ PCBs, that is (since there is a few other PCBs in the system).
What kind of watch are you wearing?
Don't let Ken Layton find out that you used a Molex crimper on Amp pins.
Winters Over! Cant wait to see this come together. Love these
I love these restore videos, although this is more of a rebuild from scratch series! LOL It is so amazing that you have the drive and determination to bring these awesome games from our youth back to life! I'm waiting with bated breath for the next video in this series! I used to play this game all the time back in the arcade and always had a blast! I even remember playing this game after Steve Perry left Journey and the operator had replaced the original Journey audio tape with Steve Perry's first solo hit Oh Sherry. Still awesome, even though it technically wasn't a Journey song! Keep up the amazing work and stay cool bro! Love it!!
I hope you feature your tournament in a video John. Looking forward to that!
off to a great start mate! who would have thought that another hour of crimping could be so entertaining. But it was! But dude, makes me cringe to see you trimming the ends of your stripped wires and spraying hundreds of small pieces of wire all over your work bench and power supply. perhaps that's what killed it... at least you finally had your midi keyboard at a safe distance :)
Lol. You guys are picky.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech all to easy to sit on our comfortable armchairs and nitpick! restoration is hard enough by itself without filming and entertaining the viewers. keep up the great work and I'll keep the comments coming... ;)
great video John, cant wait to see part 2
Why did you believe you might get shocked by that mains power line if you wouldn't have plugged it in until you connected it to something?
John do yourself and us a favor and please use both hands!
I don't know what you mean!!!! :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I think eyyojung is implying that you use both hands when you go down there, she's had more pricks than a second hand dart board! jk
I'm glad someone mentioned your channel in a comment elsewhere. Dude it was 1 hour and a half and I didn't notice. Great vid, really interesting and easy to watch. I wanna know what happened with this project. Lets see. ^_^
Looking forward to this rebuild. Seems expensive so you must really like the game. I have never heard of the game and had to Google+CZcams it. Still have no recollection of this or the band....Must have been a USA craze. Seems to be like Marmite you either love it or hate it from what Ive read on it. The digitized faces of the band technology was going to be used to save high scores, but when out on test someone flashed a naughty photo so it was pulled.LOL
You never heard of Journey?!? The band? Wow. They were a major part of the 80s soundscape. Their songs are sung on GLEE too. :)
From the UK myself, don't remember the band at all. They wasn't mayor over here. Queen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath was.John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Neil Beardwood Those are all 70s bands! Journey was huge in the 80s!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
70/80s. The likes of Abba was 70's. I wasn't really into rock though except for Queen. I checked on CZcams and I don't recognize any of the music from Journey. I might just be getting old, can any other UK/European subscribers remember Journey the band or machine from back in the day?
John, I have that very same Power Chassis that is in the bottom of this Journey cabinet for my MS Pac-Man Cocktail table (apparently they used that power chassis in the later runs of MsPac). Currently I am getting ~45VAC from it instead of the 12VAC and 7 VAC respectively. I am at a loss as to how to repair or obtain replacement parts for that chassis. I have asked on like 4 different forums and have had no luck.. Could someone please be so kind as to share a few pointers?
Thanks! I love your video series, keep it up!
Is it the transformer winding that is shot? You are measuring out of the transformer? You might need to find a new transformer all together. It's possible to rebuild it, I think there are a couple of filter caps in it. But if the transformer is shot you'll need a new one. I would make a post on KLOV.COM looking for one. Shouldn't be too horribly difficult to find. It's not rare.
John what is the crimping tool called and the connectors ? where should i buy it at ??
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Hey John! Was the Arcade Version of Journey By Bally Midway like you restoring ported to the Atari 2600 under the name Journey Escape?
The tape is new?, for best quality in the bonus game
New? Do not follow. :)
hey john I have a question hard it to do a cap kit on a ms. Pac man cabaret because my ms. Pac man has some weird issues and think it mite be caps on the monitors
thank you Zach Bland
No harder than any other monitor. Check my videos, I have done complete cap kits.
Are we gonna see gameplay of the game when its finished?.
Of course!!!
I was giving midway galaxian game and it works but it has a dim screen and picture jumps around!. I would love to store this
game do you have any videos to help
rebuild the monitor
I always strip wire with my lighter
Uh-oh the first video is 1:30:00 by itself... this is going to be a long marathon run when its done isn't it.... Oh well. ;)
Buckle-up! We got TONS to do. :)
Looking forward to it
I see there an empty space where the Black Knight use to be, is that an tribute to it’s being sold off :) he he he
i guess you didn’t have it long enough for it to become one of your children (you never sell your children right?) and it was a trade after all, I bet someone offer the right price :)
That empty space is waiting for the Journey! I gotta get moving! :)
is that your dog barking at 1:04:13
It sounded like you said ''gay''rage.
and your probrely right with the monitor being dirty, it looks really dusty.
I did say that. :)
that monitor and the power block on the bottom are pretty filthy... :(
I'll clean it later! :)
You could have had the trackball hole in the original control panel welded up. It is just a matter of cutting out a circle of sheet metal that's the same size as the trackball hole, welding it in there flush (use magnets to hold it in the hole flush until it's tack welded in place), grinding the welds down flat, and then skimming the seam with Bondo. It would have been cheaper than a reproduction control panel, and it would have been original to the machine.
heh arduino isn't linux...unless you're talking about the yun, but i think you're just talking about a regular arduino. "microcontroller board" is maybe the word you were looking for
..finished by the end of may is pretty ambitious
Well, can't you install linux on it? You know what I meant! :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I think you were confusing it with the Raspberry Pi. Arduino runs on an 8bit microcontroller, so there is no possible way to get Linux on there.
works now
its 50c and its a little cold xD we never get over 20c #UKWeather
50°F = 10°C
"Sadly we don't have any video...." Ya did get a little.
"Back in the Journey"? Oops. Back in the Tapper, right?
not working
Too soon! It's still processing.
ok
joey gatchel how long is this going to take
joey gatchel its done
joey gatchel Still not totally done. It's only at 360p
How in the world do you find the time to do all of this stuff and work a job, be married and raise kids maybe??? LOL
Sometimes I don't even know. :) Gotta keep moving! :)
the GAY RAJ, is that the same Raj from that 70's show? oh wait, was that fez? no... Big Gay Raj!!! no.... thats wrong, I'm thinking of big gay Al. Ah, I think I got it, it's Raj from The Big Bang Theory.
why you keep thinking wires are too long all the time. they are not too long. they have never looked too long when you said they are. not like it is not going to work now. what is the worst that could happen it being a little "too long"
you mess them up more by trying to get them short because think they are too long but then they are too short. do it again and think they are too long when they are not. what you think is long enough always looks too short to me. there is barely any contact for the connector it looks like.
I have no idea what you are talking about!
Awesome video
