    Good job John! I look up to you're videos not because you bring back the nostalgic memories of me going to a arcade and playing games even though the most of them were fighting games, and 90's games. But you take the time, and money to do all of this and putting it back to together making it 100% brand new! Good job John

    One other observation... I once fried a monitor by cleaning it with windex... Now I always use an anti-static cleanser which is only a few dollars more than a bottle of windex. Well, it didn't fry the actual monitor, but the PCB on the chassis. Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Sears have an anti-static cleanser that comes with an anti-static cloth for around 5 bucks.
    Just wanted to say, you have some great vids! I'll be checking more of them out now that I am aware of them!! I have fully restored only 9 arcade cabinets in my lifetime, but recently have decided to get back into it. The last one I did (prior to the one I am working on now) was in 2004 and youtube didn't even exist then!!! It would have been great to have had some video's like this available then! I restored 3 original PACMAN full size uprights, a Burgertime, a Bump N Jump, a Dig Dug, a MS PACMAN coctail, a Trivia King which was actually a PACMAN upright originally, and I restored a Ninja Gaiden cab for a friend of mine. Now I just purchased a MS PACMAN upright that was completely non-working and I have the electronics going but have to restore the cab. The biggest thing that REALLY SUCKS about doing these today is the fact that you can NO LONGER purchase new CRT monitors! The last one I did back in 04 you could still buy brand spanking new Wells Gardner crt monitors for 150 bucks- Now you have to buy used pieces of shit that can be a nightmare getting them right, and they almost always have burn in. I don't know about you, but in my opinion LCD takes away from the originality of the machine- I don't like using them in a classic cab. I just put one in my MS PACMAN and I disliked it so badly that I ripped it back out and decided to fix the original monitor which was a GIANT pain in the ass!! Do you happen to know where I can find some decent crt monitors that won't require me taking a second mortgage out on my house to buy??? LOL

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      Don't spray any liquid on any PCB and then power it up. Has nothing to do with Windex. If worried, spray it on a towel first. Thanks for watching!

    • @KLUNKET
      @KLUNKET Před 8 lety

      +John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I didn't power it up until hours after cleaning it... I was told at the time that from cleaning the monitor with Windex and a regular cloth that I had too much static built up and thats what fried the board... but he could have just told me that because he didn't know why it fried... but ever since then I use anti-static stuff around electronics

    looks great! Here is a tip, buy a roll of gaffers tape, it is really easy to take off and doesn't leave any tape residue. I only say that because I saw at 24:00 you spent a lil bit getting the masking tape off. It's not as strong overtime but for a temporary tape job it would work way easier than masking tape. Cabinet looks great, I was worried when I saw those wrinkles when you laid it on top but after you put it on it looked perfect! Thanks again for another awesome video!

    Hi John
    Awesome restore bud, I have a little tip for you the next time you apply vinyl wrap onto a cabinet like in your video.
    Before you apply the vinyl if you get some paint that’s a very close match to the vinyl you’re applying and paint all round the edges and up to the T-Molding grove on the cab when you apply the vinyl you will not see any of the underlying board (even if you make a mistake) it will look sharp and crisp and when you apply the T-Molding it looks like its factory new.
    I've used this method before and it looks stunning on cabinets like yours with wood grain effect vinyl.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 10 lety

    Nice work! Turned out great. I do a lot of vinyls on picture cars and rapid tack is a must. Also, with the vinyl so thin you could have put a skim coat over the sides and sealed it up with a piss coat. We use shellac and alcohol. Seals up everything nice. Mdf, wood, pressboard ect....
    Looking forward to the next restore!

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 10 lety

      This skim coat idea is probably a good one! Next time! The vinyl was thin and it did show everything. But, at the end of the day, it looks great! :D

    • @JohnKaduk
      @JohnKaduk Před 3 lety

      Yeah, a layer of paint / sealer on the particle board would have been a good idea. Water on exposed pressed board fibers, especially trapped under vinyl doesn't sound like a good idea. Just a guess, but it probably messed up the smooth sanded surface and probably caused small bits of swelling.

    Just finished watching this last part its 4am UK. I have the same cabaret on loan to me from a friend and he's looking to sell, this has given me the inspiration to restore it properly. Hope I can find the mask you used on the control panel over here. The freeplay/highscore save mod is well worth doing which one you looking at - there's a few around.
    One thing I would love if you could do sometime would be a short vid just about lamps, there's so many different ones, how do you identify the type needed for an existing holder when you get a new game etc?
    Awesome work - 30 year old machine starts off looking beat up and ends up looking like new.

      Thanks, James! In one of the earlier vids I tested the voltages on the lamp holder to determine if it was a 5V or 12V lamp. It was 12Vs so I put 161s in there. These worked fine but it was a little dim. The manual revealed they should be 194s which is much brighter.
      A repro version with the NAMCO copyright can be purchased from Two-Bits.
      I was gonna do the Souzilla high score mod with the NVRAM adapter.

      John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Wow! Just looked at the souzilla one, I really want to apply that to my board but that adaptor looks way complicated. The ROM programming is no problem - are you going to buy the NVRAM board pre-made or do a cool "hackers" video on doing the wire-job?

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 10 lety

      retrogamesparty I already ordered the NVRAM board. I don't think it's complicated if you just want high-score save. It gets complicated if you want the multi-game capabilities. I'll be doing a video of the NVRAM board install soon.

    They actually do make paint markers for woodgrain parts you could have used instead of the sharpie. But sharpie works too.

  • @wm437
    @wm437 Před 8 lety

    John, instead of using the marker after the fact why didn't you paint the edge of the cabinet brown? this way when you apply the vinyl the edges will look flawless. Use brown oil paint and a thin roller.

  • @delsarcade
    @delsarcade Před 10 lety

    Hi John. Won't the vinyl come off in a couple of years by applying it directly to the MDF? I usually paint everything either black or dark brown first so that the faux wood vinyl sticks better to the wood (especially over time). It also hides imperfections made while cutting the edges of the vinyl.

      Dunno. It was originally installed the same way I did it. Directly on the Particle.

    It's very odd to me that in this day and age it's cheaper to print imitation wood designs on sticky-back plastic and attach them to boards made from compressed sawdust, wood shavings and glue than it is it to varnish a nice bit of oak or pine! Nice job though John; it looks great.

      Ha! Well, this is how it was done in the 80s. I'm just trying to recreate it. :D

      @Jamie.Laszlo Před 10 lety

      Yea. I’d rather have it look authentic than have nicer wood. A nice bit of oak or pine doesn't bring back nostalgia.

      John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
      Vinyl printing is arguably the more modern approach. I just found it bizarre that we've come to this stage in the world. There are a lot of other seemingly odd things we do (because they appear harder to achieve) now but must cost less in the long run.

      Isn't that from the guy actually sitting in the same spot for hours? I know I have read somewhere if you sit in the same spot for like 8-10 hours with no movement it can lead to death not sure why.. But maybe that's why truck drivers are forced to take breaks ever so often ?

    *Tip for when using vinyl*: Remove anything stuck onto the thing you are applying the vinyl to,if you dont, it will look like crap,especially stickers.
