    Well, two thoughts I had while watching this excellent video. One, I am amazed at how much love and care you're putting into this cabinet. Bally Midway wishes their original cabs looked this good! Two, if you ever decide to actually sell this game after all the work you did, I will personally drive to New England and slap you silly! LOL Not only does this game deserve a special spot in your basement arcade, it deserves to have spotlights on it, and the big royal red ropes draped around it to keep spectators from putting their grubby hands all over the cabinet! This has to be the single most meticulously restored Journey game anywhere on the planet! Truly awe inspiring! I have to say also, that did not seem like 2 hours and 20 minutes. Great work as always my friend!!

    Not wearing the mask while sanding was not the worst part. The part when i lost my shit was when you pulled out the god damn leaf blower and started blowing all those nasty dust particles all over the place. The finest of the finest particles got airborne and that my friend is the worst. Lots of those particles will stay in your lungs forever, and tissue will grow over it. We need you to stay alive for a long time John, your videos is all we got man! :D

    For what it's worth, there's a paint job called the rust oleum paint job that supplied with the paint roller and a little bit of wet sanding and quality rivals any $2000 custom paint job that you might put on the car. The process is essentially what John is doing here, except you thin the paint out so that it drives really fast and you wet sand between coats. On the final coat you'd simply buffet out with a good buffer. Google rust oleum custom paint job and take a look at some of the cars just to give you an idea of what kind of finishes are possible using a paint roller and some sandpaper
    Hey John, good 30 minute video ;)

    When putting paint on the roller, pull the paint upwards onto the ribs of the tray with the roller and then push the roller downwards a few times without pulling upwards. That way you'll keep pushing the paint back into the bottom of the tray and you won't have too much paint on the roller. Too much paint on the roller will cause the roller not to roll.
    Either way, looking good John. Love the restoration.

    There, you were being a little too timid with the paint at first. It's the last pass that you're gonna see, so the trick is to get the paint on the surface, and then face it off with one long smooth stroke. You don't want to keep rolling over the paint once it's been in the air for a few minutes. Just roll it on and leave it to dry. . A light, angling from the side, can really give you a good perspective on how the finish is going on. Don't get me wrong, Ii still looks nice. Awesome series thanks for sharing with us

    I've been watching your restoration videos. Thanks for sharing. It's great to see your successes as well as your mistakes. Though I wish you didn't have to face the mistakes! I noticed when you roll, you roll in straight lines. I've seen elsewhere and had success by making consecutive V shapes without removing the roller. Then simply move your starting point and repeat. That way you get finer coats. That being said, you did get the results! Anyway, thanks for sharing your videos! Good luck on the rest of the restoration!

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 10 lety

      Yeah, the house painter guys say to roll in the shape of a "W" or "N". I am aware of this. My instinct is to go up and down for some reason. At the end of the day, I absolutely go the results I wanted so I guess it's ok. :)

      +John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech actually from a professional to you... you start in the middle.. and multi coat multi coat and multi coat also... with latex paint water is the natural thinner... the thinner the paint the smooth the job... honestly thats why you kept seeing orange peel ALSO another tip is to use ployurathane OVER your paint job the eliminate orange peel but it will make it shinny

    @jaredzimney626 Před 8 lety

    Hey John, just rewatching the Journey rebuild and wanted to pass along a painting tip (for whenever you paint another cabinet, or your house...whatever) ... if you go from the bottom to the top in one stroke, and slightly angle the roller towards the tip of the roller (not the handle side) you'll drastically reduce the likelihood of leaving lines. Just thought I'd share that tidbit. :)

  • @RetroRoadshow
    @RetroRoadshow Před 10 lety

    instead of a paint tray, find a dollar store and get some of those disposable aluminum casserole pans. Hot glue a couple scrap cardboard feet to one end so that it leans and voila! $1 paint tray that you can wash or throw away w/out feeling like you wasted too much money. Also try some of those cheap foam brushes. They handle differently, but i find them easier to blend w/out the lines that bristle brushes leave.

  • @theorgandude
    @theorgandude Před 10 lety

    i'd be inclined to lay the machine on it's side. Paint the upper surface that is parallel to the ground. Gravity will remove lines and smooth out any imperfections. of course you have to paint and dry one side at a time but it might be quicker in the long run, would also be interesting to see the effect of an automotive paint buffer versus sanding.

    For the amount of restores you do, you'd think that you would have already invested in a proper air tank and hvlp setup by now. For what you're doing, you can get er done for 300-400 bucks, which would make this process a DREAM to do, and turn out an infinitely better result in half the time.

    Paint sucks. Its very hard to get it right using a roller.
    I have some great techniques that leave little to no roller marks, and the surface is smooth, but I'd probably need to make a video to explain it better.
    Regardless, that cab needed to be laid down on its side and the paint applied horizontally. That is, you applied it vertically while the cab was upright, increasing the risk for lines and roller marks, whereas if you had the cab on the ground, and applied the paint horizontally, you'd get a more even coat.
    Anyways, its done now, and it looks good. Something tells me this cab will be a keeper for a long time to come.

    This is kind of a random question, but is this method of restoring these machines cost effective?
    i mean, comparing the amount of hours spent on the restore and the cost of materials to the cost of buying a newer / already restored machine, which is less expensive? Let's say you value your time at minimum wage in the U.S. - around 8-10$.

    About how long does it take for your garage to get back down to 50 from 70 after running that heater for a 1/2 hour ?

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 10 lety

      A few hours. It doesn't happen very fast as the garage is insulated.

    Not sure if you mentioned but what type of paint are you using and is it oil-based or water-based ???

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      For Journey I used water based paint. I couldn't get oil based in that color.

    By the way, John, you might want to do a video on arcade safety. These games aren't cheap, and certain aspects of the arcade hobby can be quite dangerous. For example, John Pio's Spy Hunter cabinet weights at least 300 pounds. That could do a lot of damage to your home or cause some serious injuries if it wasn't transported properly.

    Your not using enough paint and your pushing to hard on it. that’s why u have dry spots. U keep painting the same spot going over and over it. That’s the other reason it looks dry. Paint it like your painting a wall. Straight up and down. Also the paint is too shinny to be rolling, u will see all imperfections.

    Yo dong-bag 95% of your paint problems are because you are only using a paint tray liner without a $3 metal paint tray. Without the tray the liner is at the wrong angle witch is leading to your paint overload on the roller. I love your videos but don't cut corners on a $3 paint tray. This is almost as comical as the brown pain debacle.
