  • Consumer drone businesses Rotor Riot and Fatshark have been sold by RedCat Holdings to Unusual Machines Inc. Is this a good move for the hobby? Are there smoke and mirrors involved designed to make RedCat's ledgers look a little more healthy? What does the future hold for RR and FS under the umbrella of Unusual Machines Inc?

It said right on that page that Unusual Machines was previously known as Red Cat Motors.

Perhaps they could make the FS brand more desirable again, because it sure isn’t now. My first pair of premium FPV goggles were Fatshark Dom V3… and they were also my last FS goggle.
Frankly, it’s been a while since I saw anything from FatShark solidly recommended in the RC groups to new buyers or those coming back to the hobby. The company was dying anyway.
Skyzone started swiping market share from them in 2021 and when I purchased a pair of 04x v2, I could see why. A slicker interface, and overall better goggle with a DVR that didn’t suck at 60fps! Oh, and the HDMI ports actually worked properly and didn’t start dying once they began to see some usage. This is why Fatshark slowly “lost” the top recommend in the analog market to Skyzone.
Then, we see the HDzero situation, and it’s really remarkable if you think about it. A year ago at this time they were splitting with fatshark, and their future was in question. Now HDz has produced their own goggle and product line with a lot of development. For whatever reason, none of this happened under the Shark Byte brand, and the question is why? Another failure under the fatshark brand but they flourished once they escaped redcat/fs.
Makes you wonder what’s been going on management wise. I’m not even gonna get into rotor riot…

I noticed at 3:02 of your video that “Red Cat Motors” is listed as a previous name of Unusual Machines. Interesting…

Window dressing, and also perhaps the with the new focus on classified military stuff, their military clients may be requiring them to isolate their retail products(fatshark). So they "sell"/move those into the other company. Who knows, maybe they'll be now secretly be making "military grade" fatsharks!

A few things -- Red Cat CEO Jeff Thompson seems to sit on the board of directors for Unusual Machines, so it feels like a spin-off. Having worked for a government contractor for years, this is likely happening in order to establish different business units for regulatory and compliance purposes. Government contracting comes with very strict boundaries that you must work within in order to land contracts. It's likely that having these other subsidiaries either creates conflicts or may create issues with compliance. It's also possible that the business relationships that Red Cat may have had by purchasing controversial products from other countries (DJI or other Chinese companies, perhaps) may have an impact as well.

With red cat becoming a defense contractor it’s probably a way to serve consumers and governments with a firewall separating the two markets basically.

It's called BAIT and SWITCH.....it basically the SAME business, someone opened it for a TAX diversion and call it a separate company, but really it isn't .They are tied together just looks better for the IRS and tax laws instead of $$$ being charged and taxes being paid, it is $$$ being charged OFF and less taxes being paid .

Military and defence, that's where the money is, especially these days when so many people are being scared into being fearful of the bad actors, we just need to define who these bad actors are. Bet it's not who we should think of either.
Puerto Rico, a colony in the 21st century, this should not be even a thing. Redcat seems to be doing some really shady accounting tricks, again, by design.
It's a scam all over the world these days.
